  • Wish he would do more videos

  • A camera filming a camera? Inception

  • Also, I want your workshop :)

  • Welding with the disks inside? isn't that dangerous? (to damage the disks)

  • you're a genius man!

  • WOW! I really enjoyed watching this!!!

  • Did you buy all those tools

    DAMM!

  • Good computer

  • Never in my life i have ever seen anyone be that rough with HDD's.

I hope they still work after what you did to them. lol

  • your are amzing man! your computer kicks ass!!!!!! best one ive actually ever seen!

  • Non mi piace lavorare con i componenti montati, pericolo trucioli.

    Comunque bel lavoro

  • k i am build one similar

how do you have do many hds one that small psu

    explain the wiring plz

    thanks

  • As a PC Modder [In my spare time] I always come back to this video.

Both the Black Dwarf & this Video are a work art.

  • hey can u bulid me one and package it over here

  • 12 people are pissed off because they still have a 286 XD and cannot watch this video because they have 28k dialup :p

  • @scott93257 If they have a 286 then they probably have a monochrome screen thats like 320x240 and like a 8MB hard drive, so not only will they not be able to watch the video, they wouldn't even be able to store it.

  • @DannyDethPyroManiac

    Yes that too :)

  • That is AMAZING..Love the design...and the nice integration of hardware...How much does the one with listed specs cost?

  • My planet is in orbit of a Blue Giant.

  • @InfraStricture

It is Pandora you speak of yes? XD if so, I've been paying attention...Waiting for Avatar 2...which will be here in 2013

  • subscribed thanks to westcoastmods. : )

  • Thats one bad ass workshop... Excellent work Maestro..

  • I watched this video some months ago and came back to watch again just because I really liked your garage!

  • You have created beautiful nerd porn.

  • That workshop is Where Amazing Happens

  • It's nice to see someone who is good with working with tools and fabrication as well as with computers like myself.. we're of a rare breed

  • YOUR FUKING AWESOME MAN, YOU SHOULD DEFO WORK FOR APPLE AND MAKE THEM NEW DESIGNS

  • BEAST

  • f*cking pro :DD

  • Hey Will, nice work. Off topic but related question for you.. What HD Camcorder did you use to make this video? I am looking to pick one up and your video quality is great along with the seamless video editing done. Thanks Will.

  • I saw your project on Bit-Tech.net and just thought it was an awesome piece of design and kit! Thanks for making a video! :)

  • 3:30 I would have thought that that would damage the HDD's...

  • @websurfer1232 those aren't the ones he uses in the final build. You'll notice that those just have plane white lbaels and the ones in the final build have grenn ones

  • U r my Idol man :)

  • do you film everything yourself? looks like you planned out the camera and everything you are very talented

  • i want one.

but how much cost the motherboard.

    and wats the song.

  • Hi Will,

Sorry for my english (I'm from Ukraine).

During the creation of the case you used electric welding. Could not tell you more about it (type, method of welding etc.)?

    Thanks

  • @peacemaker0alex Thats a mig welder. Wire feed with flux core wire. This is great because I'm just working in my garage, so all I needed was the standard 115v socket and no gas canisters required.

  • wow i love that build also love the way you use your camera

  • thanks and btw nice computer

  • is that a sas or sata drive?

  • @lapulapu12345 Those are Sata Drives. I used a couple of SAS to 4xSata fan out cables.

  • YOU AINT GOT NO PANCAKE MIX!

  • I was gonna say - finally a Newegg employee that knows what he's doing.. Then I noticed you were a Guest showing your epic creation..

  • Am I the only one worried about temperature of those drives when turned on? Especially the lucky ones in the middle.

  • @KurohtinV in the newegg channel video he said that they ran relatively cool, power consumption plays a large roll in heat and those drives dont use very much juice

  • Nice shop!

  • 3:31 nice heat treatment

  • Great mod. The video is just amazing! Geat work! :)

  • What is the part during the unboxing at 1:09? After the RAID card. Just curious what it was and does. Thanks and can't wait for the next video.

  • @AtomicWingut Thats a mini psu - The motherboard itself takes a direct 12v in, but im sure couldn't handle distributing power to 8 3.5" drives. So I got that to handle the drives separately.

  • Hands up if you think UnknownLobster would be a god at Minecraft :)

  • So, what motherboard did you use? Processor? Power supply?

  • @imachessnut Full details on the project are available on the website, direct link in the video info.

  • what was the power supply you used?

  • Awesome work!

    - Elizabeth Allen

  • Excellent camera and production work!

  • very good skills :)

  • Linux ftw ?

    lol

Imagine the speed you would get out of ssds at that amount in raid 1 :O!

    IMAGINE THE COST!

  • make a mod with a gamecube, same motherboard

  • I love your work shop... awesome video. :)

  • placing hdd with angle like this will couse appearing of big amount of bad sectors

  • You are using:

8x 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green 3.5" HDD

320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black 2.5" HDD

    30GB OCZ Vertex Series SSD

8*2TB is for the big volume, but why do you have a 320GB HDD, AND a 30GB SSD? Just one of them would be enough, right?

  • @feyenoordforever63 The 30GB SSD would be used for the OS, and then the HDD would be used as a drive which the OS would backup its core files onto,

  • @feyenoordforever63 The SSD is the OS, the 320 black drive is for bit torrent and other files.

  • Talent. Some. Wish me Had.

  • I'm not a fan of this project, it's too reminiscent of those old plastic floppy drive boxes. Sorry.

I will however gladly concede that this is the most impressive worklog, most impressive collection of tools (even with some custom tools) in a garage and the most outstanding craftsmanship I've come across.

  • Do you do such things, as I'll call it "modding" for living? Couse that set of power tools is impressive.

  • god damn you have a lot of tools

  • Nice build and nice video editing :)

  • this is the definition of case modding

  • why didn't you use windows sever 2008

  • @pcclanrocks I would like to learn more about other operating systems, but I also wanted to get it up and running asap cause I needed the storage space. I'm not trying to promote windows 7 or anything for this specific purpose but it's working great for how I'm using it.

  • How thick is the steel and aluminum that you used, and how did you wire the power switches that turn on the case and just the hard drives?

  • How long did it take from scratch to finish?

  • Epic video editing, and great work! A true American hero.

  • Did you customize your workshop by yourself?

  • @Twixie1994 Yea, it's just a garage in a house - but a lot of things like the worktables and that metal rack are also built from scratch.

  • What was the cost for this?

  • @nathan42100 The case is not for sale but the cost in components at the time was around $2000. For the same now you could probably do it for closer to $1400.

  • @UnknownLobster How would one go about making a case similar to that without welding skills?

  • @nathan42100 I dont think there's something in particular I would suggest. A lot of people use plastic that might have worked for most of this along with the aluminum. It's really just about whatever material you feel comfortable with.

  • @UnknownLobster I think you can use Rivet.

  • what is the OS that you are using for the NAS?

this is SUCH a cool project ! I wish I had your skills... well, I don't have a

tig welder for aluminum.. but i had such, I could clone it given enough time, cash,

    parts list and detailed specs...

  • @limrich007 I didnt weld any aluminum - that's something I need to learn to do. The system is running windows 7.

  • cool buggy

  • the amazing fabrication aside, there's a lot of creative camera work here that many people don't realize

  • Awesome job. Just curious - did you consider using a RAID6-capable controller? And if so, why did you go with the one you chose instead?

  • @JustDisGuy Not really. That's an absurdly small raid card, and when I started I believes that's what I needed. It turns out I could have accommodated something bigger but this is working out well. Also, at the time this was on sale for like, $140, which is a great deal to connect 8 sata drives.

  • hey, where did u actually learn to work like that? with all these tools.. how to mess with metal etc...

  • Awesome on so many levels! \:D/

  • mad skills, much respect.

now, off to watch part 2.

  • I beg you to run it with zfs =D

    It will be really sweat....

  • this is studio maker PC's

  • i just thought of a cool project you might wanna do...how about getting a laptop like new toshiba or something and transplanting all of the insides into a nice apple laptop shell(i like the apple ibook g4 personally, nice and clean). this way you get the same capabilities as the new laptop with the sleekness of an apple laptop..you could even mod the apple shell or go all out and make a custom laptop shell cause i've been sitting on this idea for a while and thought if anyone could do it you can

  • pro

  • I was hit by pro work... DO WANT!

  • oh my fucking god damn GOD! nice

  • wouldnt you get an overheating / vibration problem?

  • @ChucklesPCguy

no not really, there are some specialized pc fans....in perspective.

the pc 120 mm fan in your typic dell case would usually put out an cfm rating of the 10-20 range

(cubic feet of air per min)

and cost you about 5 dollars online

there are fans that put out over 250 cfm,and cost about 50 dollars,of the same size.

  • At first I was wondering the same thing; Is this guy crazy shooting all those metal shavings at his hard drives??? Then I watched the second video and it all made sense :-)

  • awsome, the workmanship, the videographing, i would buy it if its cheap

  • And soon a new great idea ? ;D

  • GREAT VIDEO

Many people are saying "Don't install ANY electronics like harddrives into a box before you are finished drilling and welding". Did you watch the whole video? The drives are probably dead and he puts in 8 new HDDs at the end of the build.

  • I applaud your DIY effort and shop, yet seriously.... Unmatched HDs?!? GRINDING dust directly onto the exposed drives? What's up with the rotary table, selling jewelery?

Did you spend more time on the HD shoebox or the video takes?

  • Don't install ANY electronics like harddrives into a box before you are finished drilling and welding. Metal filing and other objects will short and damage the electronics. This is the worklog of an idiot.

  • u have a beter life then i do

  • Nice garage. I'd really like to have a torch like that. :)

  • Great work! What was the white instrument that was turning 360degrees?

  • Damn I should have taken metals more seriously in junior high smh.....great video!

  • Any news on the tracks used for this video? I thinkt he tracks are awesome and really make the video even better to watch!

  • Awsome as hell could not be! Because hell is not cool but anyway. Awsome build.

  • PROTIP: Grinding metal shavings onto hard drive circuit boards is usually not good for them.

  • @BorisKafka PROTIP: understanding what your seeing before commenting is a good idea.

  • @UnknownLobster I think all he means is the part at 3:05 where you are cutting the metal casing very close to the 8x hdds

  • @UnknownLobster It looked a lot like you were grinding metal shavings onto hard drives.

  • @UnknownLobster - PROTIP: Understanding the difference between your and you're is a good idea.

  • @UnknownLobster PROTIP: Understanding the difference between your and you're is a good idea.

  • @UnknownLobster this is your JOB right? it looks like fun =)

  • @BorisKafka that isn't the hard drive he used in the final build, those are either dead or unused ones he just uses to get the sizes right

  • Very Very Cool! Thanks for doing this, it's inspiring!

  • Love the editing ! ! nice build!

  • Too bad tweakersnet isn't written in english.

  • Watching your videos is like watching Tony Stark building the Iron Man suits.

  • @monev Amen to that!

  • Discovery Channel's "How it's made" should take notice of this!

  • WOW, that is very nice.

  • best. really impressed.

  • great shop #LOL

  • What is the name of the music track by Phil Lehman-Brown in this video?

  • Phil made these tracks just for these videos - I dont think they're available and I'm not sure if he plans on releasing them. I'll give him an e-mail about it!

  • you must have some exspensive cameras

  • What's the car in the background?

  • @ImSpartacus811 74 superbeetle that I converted into a baja.

  • i can't seem to find Phil Lehman-Brown music anywere to download :(

  • @fooey88 His music can be found at speakeasy (dot) org/~jklbrown/phil/ (youtube will not let me paste URLS)

  • wow to the editing and the dude worknig, work of art man..

  • 160000'st is me ! ! ! !

  • Ok now I'm kind of curious here, why the 320gb hdd?

  • @seanchiarot The 320's for torrents mostly.

  • Excellent video, awesome system, and simply beautiful video editing. You made a traditional worklog into a piece of art, showcasing your project from start to finish in the best way. Very good work. What software did you use to create this masterpiece?

  • @GiggersBack Premiere CS4 (on a pc of course)

  • Its funny to me how nobody cares about ESD anymore. It used to be you had to work using anti-static straps and surfaces if you wanted to play around with circuit boards. Nowadays, I guess, the chips have sufficient protection so they don't easily get damaged by static shocks.

  • Wow man.. Great work...Keep that up.

  • that was awesome.

  • its not often i put on HD and fullscreen just for a Youtube vid..

  • Nothing short of amazing man, that looks sweet as a nut

  • Really just amazing...uff! Good luck and have nice days and a lot of such awesome things and projects!

  • there's a guy in aventura/ miami craigslist advertising for someone to build him something like this, thought you should know

  • You are talented as hell.

  • Sorry about my bad english and if you were already asked with I said. I'm hoping to see many innovative and creative projects from you. Thanks and cheers from Brazil!

  • Great work, man! I'd like to tell you to do one for me, but I won't because I'm in Brazil and it would be hard to be delivered. A simple question is: how many you spent with this project in its total? Did you get any discount getting this quantity of hard drives? I am questioning it because here in Brazil the 2 TB hard drives are still very expensive. Just a few months the Seagate 1 TB hard drives had their prices dropped to about 140 dollars, which I consider pretty expensive.

  • @dhaav The cost for components of this project is just under $2000. I'm not sure of places selling bulk drives, I always just keep an eye out for sales, these were $150 each when I got them.

  • You are absolutely awesome dude, Been so busy lately i missed your vids, well better late than never.

As I watch you work with you power tools, I thinking fuck did he rob my garage, we have exactly the same sort of tools, down to the same manufacture... lol

Great use of you space, how to keep sparks from flying on to your car? better yet how did you film some of those shots... amazing!!

  • @WestCoastMods Hey Lazyman, thanks! I try make sure the car isn't in the line of fire, but to be honest, that thing has so many chips and stuff from rocks and pebbles off-roading that It's not a huge concern, lol.

  • FANTASTIC work! What equipment did you use to pan the cameras automatically and run them down that overhead track (or dolly for that matter) that was awesome!

  • @rawrnews If you check my channel I did a few behind the scenes videos for this and the os xbox pro where I show some of the equipment. I think they'll answer a lot of your questions.

  • @UnknownLobster Thanks, I will check that out. I love how your case looks like a floppy disk holder :)

  • Dude! i wish i had half the skills you have... Great work!

  • you have no life and far too much time on your hands.... and i fookin loves it!!!! how much for one of those?

  • Seems like you would want a bit of space inbetween the drives for airflow. (But you already mentioned that HD temp is okay) How long did it actually take you to do this project? If you didn't have to take into account time for camera setup... and just did this project how long would it take you?

The camera work is fantastic. Who did it? (there were no credits that I saw) And what program did you use to edit?

  • @heisest I have no real good way of figuring out how long this project would have taken without the video, as the two projects are so intertwined together. There were no credits for camera at the end because everything except the music was done by me.

  • i should use plastic its better than al that metal. and better to work with ;)

  • good fking job, thats why engineering is boss

  • @rnelan7 I've always bought them in the form of molex to sata splitters and then taken them apart. You basically have to check the picture of wherever you get it to make sure it's the same 90* type.

  • The hd will have a short life if they will be at a angle like that.

  • @Robbaz You have no idea what your talking about.

  • @UnknownLobster awesome video - 5* - however conventional wisdom states that HDs should be mounted vertically or horizontally. mounting at an angle torques the bearings in the motors. if you have something that refutes this please share it.

  • @ethr95awd Thanks for your comment, and dont get me wrong, Im not trying to encourage people to do something there not comfortable with -but Ive read quite a bit in forums, and all arguments against this mounting method aren't valid. Your welcome to "play it safe." We cant possible have a whole debate through youtube comments, so if you want to start another debate somewhere else that's fine, Im not interested in being involved of course, I just thought people would like to see my new computer.

  • @UnknownLobster if you ever held a spinning bicycle wheel you will know what i'm talking about, it will stress the hard drives in the same way. There is a reason why they are mounted vertically or horizontal.

  • @Robbaz the bicycle comparison doesn't apply. The reason why they (im guessing they means most other systems) are mounted in those two ways is because most cases are based off right angles- I think you can agree there is no reason for an angle in 99% of cases. Your forgetting many all in ones including the hugely popular iMacs where due to the tilting monitor the hard drives operate at similar angles. Many docks including Seagates new freeagent gos do also. Those are just off the top of my head.

  • @Robbaz You know all your doing is playing it safe, which is fine, but just say "i dont think.." or "I wouldnt.." Dont comment with the tone of some sort of authority as if I made some sort of huge oversight here. I built another system with drives at the same angle 4 or so years ago-Ill admit they werent running 24/7 but there still running strong. Logic leads me to believe there is no problem with this setup and no actual evidence has ever suggested otherwise. mfrs suggestion is not evidence.

  • this. is. awesome!

  • Excellent video! You certainly know how to shoot and edit a nice vid!

Does the fan in the back cool all the drives well enough? It would seem that the forward drives receive little to no cooling at all?

Also, were you at all afraid to damage the drives with all the cutting and grinding and welding going on?

  • @mace1337 I made sure there was little danger to working components during construction. And the fan is doing a perfect job, I cut the holes at the bottom to to give the least air resistance to the front-most drives, so the cooling is pretty even- all stay about 5*f from each other.

  • I really want a garage like that one day. How much would you say your entire tools setup costs?

  • @foldablechair I have no idea, The first really expensive tool i got myself was the flux core welder in 10th grade - its really built up over time.

  • Really stunning level of skill and attention to detail here. Congrats.

  • He obviously likes film-making and DIY at the garage - perfect combination! =D

  • Wow.
