THANK YOU for posting this! I've been reviewing everything from the time he announced his candidacy in '79 thru his death in '04. Nice to see others care about not only the greatest POTUS the US has ever seen-since Lincoln-but The Gippers legacy & all the good he did for America, as well as (then) Russia & SO many other countries worldwide. History is so important (tho like most kids I sure didn't think so when in school!). Actually-2012 is a LOT like '80 was when Reagan ran against Carter.
I remember that CNN incorrectly reported Rep. Giffords passed away and I remembered that James Brady had been reported as having passed away. It's too bad Frank Reynolds wasn't around to yell at those people.
Wow, people are nuts.. in the slow motion around 5:40 some cameraman comes up behind Reagan, who's being pushed into a car-- into the line of potential fire and starts taking pictures.
I remember seeing this in the news so many times when I was a kid, probably the first time I became aware of politics, and decided that being President looked like a really crappy job.
SNL was brilliant after this. "Buckwheat has been shot, repeat, Buckwheat has been shot! Buckwheat is dead. and Eddie Murphey's Buckwheat was never heard from again.
I remember clearly when this happened. My first thoughts were "Not again!" After John Kennedy was murdered, I was glad when Oswald got his. I was hoping Hinckley would too. Instead he ended up with 30 years in Club Fed Hospitals. He should have been fried. Now Hinckley's whining about wanted more weekends out of the hospital. Since when does someone who's criminally insane (supposedly) get weekends off? Is he supposed to be sane on weekends?
1980-1981 were crazy times. Within a matter of months, John Lennon and Anwar Sadat were assassinated, and assassination attempts where made on Reagan, Queen Elizabeth II, and Pope John Paul II.
@GeorgeVreelandHill I remember when this happened, too. I was going through the card catalog at the library, trying to write a book on George Herbert Walker "poppy" Bush. Unfortunately the reference points I was trying to find literature for, were no where to be found. I had to wait 20 years for the internet to attain this knowledge and correlate the connectedness of the aforementioned pedo-satanist with just about eveything Evil there is on Planet Earth.
CNN in it's Chicken Noodle Network days... Great how the cop ducks huh?... the guy in dark trench coat to the right, apparently and under cover cop, really was on top of his job that day. Dig the guy next to him nonchalantly smoking a cig..
CBS actually went back to regular programming (even if briefly)?!?!?
I would have thought that all of the "Big 3" would have stayed on the air after the first bulletin instead of going back (briefly) to regular programs until either they knew how serious it was or (had President Reagan not been hit) official word that the President had not been hurt.
BTW, if this had happened a few weeks earlier, Walter Cronkite might well have been in the CBS anchor chair that day.
@SecretService80 he takes the bullet and still he gets the last medical attention.. man.. wait is he like the one that survived and was left paralized in a wheel chair..
I know there was a lot of chaos that day regarding information about the attempted assassination, but knowing now what we know about what happened right after Reagan's limo left the scene, I still find it hard to believe that it took so long to inform the public ASAP that indeed, Reagan had been shot. Newscasters kept emphasizing that the President had not been hit, but he collapsed as soon as he walked into the hospital! Why so long to report? And now we know that he came close to death too.
@tan5475 "Suspect 1" was a military official, I don't remember the name, who was carrying the "Nuclear football", or the President's personal nuclear codes, away from the shooting. He hit the deck like any trained authority would (except Secret Service) when they hear gunfire.
Strange seeing Max Robinson covering this in Chicago considering his background as a longtime anchor for WTOP in Washington prior to joining ABC News.
speaking of shootings - CRIME VICTIMS OF THE MORE VIOLENT OF THE ILLEGAL ALIENS
There is an enormous number of Americans who have been harmed by the criminals who pass through the nation's open borders. For that reason, this section can only provide a symbolic tribute to the many unnamed victims who have been killed, raped, robbed, crippled and otherwise personally violated.

John Hinckley Jr. is the world's greatest freedom fighter and Reagan was a tyrant and he was really violating the Separation of powers clause of the U.S. Constitution just before he was shot by issuing many executive orders on his say so. Hinckley must be freed RIGHT NOW!!! And a job is a legal right from the US Government. it was a good thing that Hinckley taught Reagan a lesson that he needed to learn on March 30, 1981.
@SoldierUSArmy Are you serious! No President no matter what Party (Jack Kennedy-Remember) deserves to be gunned down. You need your head cheak....I don't care what ideology, no President deserves to die in office....This country can't take another (Nov 22) again. We are still suffering for Jack Kennedy's death to this day.
@Kickingit06 I don't worship Jack Kennedy....So get over you hate for the Kennedies. Jack Kennedy was a man...FLAWED..but was admired by many including many in the GOP and the mainstream RIGHT...but hated by the far right no question
@Kickingit06 If you think NOVEMBER 22 was a great day for the country...you need your head check. I stand by my whole statement...the country CAN'T take a another NOV 22 again.
MrVLocC: There's no "hahaha" about it. Of course he'd produce a weapon and take charge. It's what agents are trained to do in a crisis. What you you have done? Suck your thumb? Light up a joint? Laugh "hahaha?"
whoever the mr-i am smoking like it's cool and acting like a retired special forces guy is, it doesnt matter. he's probably dead from cancer by now. your question has been answered. somewhat in a bizarre fashion but an answer none the less. you can sleep better now knowing that the calm smoking man is probably dead by now but maybe his kid's or grandkid's are doing the same thing-> standing around acting like nothing happened whenever something happens. lol sorry if my jibber jabber is annoying.

I was getting ready to go to work when this happened.
When I got to work, I told people what happened and only one or two believed me.
Think about that one ...
I was about to go to work when a flash came over the TV that shots were fired at President Reagan.
Talk about wanting to stay home.
