@SecondComingTwice ~ No, your absolutely right about that BUT Hendrix still played those strings from the left side of the gutiar! The world makes so many things difficult for (us) southpaws but, on occasion, we find a way to get it done.
When I see surf I hear Dick Dale's surf guitar, when I see Dick Dale play I imagine myself surfing. The two go hand in hand with each other. Nowadays I only surf on the net :(
....Rendezvous...maybe....I was there about every weekend for 3-4 years in 1963-5..until it burned down...it was at Balboa in S. Calif...just a couple miles west of the 'wedge' at Corona Del Mar.. Funny thing...I don't know anyone that has ever heard of the Rendezvous...guess they're too young...??.
@MarcBrewer ~ The first time, it has been written, that Dick Dale played Leo's brand new creation (the Fender Stratocaster), Fender could not believe it when Dale began playing the Stratocaster upside down & backwards, changing chords "on the fly." Fender, working with the Lansing speaker people, came up with the JBL-D130F 15" speaker hooked up to Fender's 100 watt (running up to 185 watt) amp (known as the "Showman Amp"). Dale's sound became legend and he's still banging @ 182 years old!
if you can track down the Wedge version by Johnny Barakat and The Vessels it is the best and hardest version of this standard... I'll upload it if I can.
Other than in Southern California, Dick Dale never quite reached the level of musical recognition that he deserved BUT it was rumored that the skills required to play this pace of music, on a stringed instrument, made him, perhaps, the world's all-time most prolific masturbator!!! :)
The blond chick (just to the left to Dale) with the black dress & pony tail (@ 1:34) was, for a little while, doing what can only be described as "an accelerated mash potato." Speaking from experience, Dick Dale's music was generally too fast for the contempory dances of that era (1962'ish) so you either jammed on the afterburners or tried to slow down the pace to a one half count. The lefty was magical on his Fender but was hard to dance to for more than 30 seconds! And bring deodorant! :)
My understanding is that for this 1 minute & 55 second performance the entire group, including Dick Dale, consumed 14 pounds of crack. Further, it was reported that subsequent to the performance, Dale and his band crashed for 96 straight hours in a 1964 Ford Econoline Van.
Dick Dale WAS the original when it came to left-handed gutiar players. By the time Jimi Hendrix came along, Dale had already been burning the strings off that Fender for years. His gutiar put out a sound unlike anyother I have heard in the 54 years I have been listening to popular music. I bought my first D.D. 45 RPM record in 1962 (Surf Beat), he gave all us southpaws hope and a little pride too.
Dick Dale was a left-hander playing a right-handedly stringed guitar... he just flipped the guitar to his left hand and learned to play the chords in a very unorthodox way...
@djanuszewski1985 i'm pretty sure it's something most lefties learn to do - you know, you go over your friends house and pick up his/her guitar, likely right handed....

So Dick buys a lefty strat and then changes the nut and restrings it upside down? Or did Leo make him a custom guitar?
