  • Even if grunge never hits mainstream again (Lets hope it never does) there is still a lot of grunge bands starting up right now. People are sick of rap and metal is getting to where the musicanship is getting drained (Not by all though) and then they find grunge. Hope, and pick up a guitar and start a band yourself

  • metal's musicianship is not getting drained. its just mixing and turning into deathcore, which is worse.

  • ya kno, no genre will ever die. cos as long as someone listens to it or remembers it then its still alive. and odds are that not one genre of music will ever not be listened to since theyre all so interconnected.

  • Nice, I'm into metal mostly but shit like this is badass.

  • Look into A Senile Animal, Stoner Witch, Bullhead, or Houdini then.

  • I took your advice HalfwayHouse12a and went and got a copy of Stoner Witch, thease guys are bad ass

118157- You can find a few Melvins songs on a compilation called DEEP SIX.(c/z records -pre sub pop label) It was hard to find vinyl back in the day, but it's been re-released on CD. I suggest that for early stuff.

  • sweet thanks

  • that cowboys got a gnarly bass.

  • i like how the Melvins' songs really let you percieve them for yourself; they're not just laid out for you in plain, boring fucking english

  • Is that a bicycle rim Dale Crover is playing?

  • Maybe me, and the Queen, could get a side order.

  • these guys are so badass.

  • STFU stupid chink you wouldnt know good music if it invaded your country! Fuck you noodlehead!

  • stop swearing, have you any idea how retarded this makes you look? If you don't like the melvins, move on, I'm sure there is something out there you might like....

  • what music do you like? no need for racism, theres plenty of good asian progressive artists so its self demeaning to be pulling those ones out

  • Oh i was just messin with him haha....i'm not racist at all i was just extremely bored that day...so i apologize hehe. And i like all music besides country and hip-hop/rnb.....some old rap is good like nwa, public enemy, and some new rap like buck 65 and sage francis. I usually listen to B-52's, Bjork, Melvins, Tool, APC, Metallica, Pantera, For Today, Primus, Dead Milkmen, Cranberries, Poe, Meshuggah, Nirvana, Korn, Ramones, 36 Crazyfists, Five Finger Death Punch...i could go on forever haha.

  • shit yeah man, huge fan of alot of that - ever get into any mosdef and rap like that?

  • mos def sucks

  • what would regard as good rap then? enlighten me, i have a grunge/60-70's progrock/dark rock backgroud

  • you've never listened to like, really dark metaphysical type rap? DALEK (they tour with MELVINS) Jedi Mind Tricks Swollen Members (their more mystical stuff) Abstract Rude Freestyle Fellowship BINARY STAR Sunz Of Man K-Rino The Wizard NON PHIXION VISIONARIES have fun, I know I did
  • shit mate, thanks so much - you wouldn't happen to be knowlegeable if there is any sorta jazz-influenced rap? I really think that would be my kind of sound aswell. looks like I got alot of albums to buy

  • Freestyle Fellowship is definately jazz-influenced. They have some scat tracks.

I know there's many more, just cant quite think of the names off-hand. I'll get back to ya though

  • A Tribe Called Quest's debut The Low End Theory is the perfect album for you. You thank me later! ;)

  • jazzy rap? "Justice System - Take it to the Stage" "Freestyle Fellowship - innercity bounderies" "a tribe called quest feat de la soul - award tour" "Pete Rock & CL Smooth-T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)" "Digable Planets - Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" "A Tribe called quest - Jazz(We've Got) & Buggin' Out" "The Roots - Proceed" "De La Soul- In The Woods" "Guru`s Jazzmatazz - Loungin" "main source - looking at the front door" "Souls Of Mischief - From93Till Infinity" "MF Doom-Arrow Root"
  • pffffff

  • Naw...not really into that type of hip-hop...basically every band ConiferTreez mentioned i like...metaphysical as he put it haha.

  • wow, you listen to REALLY shitty music, except for MELVINS. All the other bands you listed suck donkey balls

  • How can you say Metallica/Pantera sucks? They're like some of the most influental bands ever...and if you don't like Tool your insane! But w/e i guess...its your opinion.

  • Metallica's first 3 albums are influential, but that's about it.

    pantera didn't influence a god-damn thing

  • K w/e dude...i don't really care what you have to say..theyre bands i like so if you dont thats fine with me...

    ...damn chink..

  • Godamn this song is so heavy and badass, and i agree whitedemon

  • Not enough people realize the genius of these guys.

  • "Not enough people realize the genius of these guys."

The people who *matter* realize it, so to hell with the rest. They're still hiding beneath a thin plastic veneer that they may never learn how to peel off.

  • dude satorres how can you say no talent dude dale crover is fucking amazing

  • great song....

    i have the same converse...

    =)

  • prob. n'sync or mariah! or maybe some fuckin lameass wanabee pussy rap bullshit. brain damaged fuckin idiot.

  • Everyone says shit like that but they cant ever back it up with info....and you must be fucking insane in the first place to say they suck

  • i thought they were grunge

  • sludge to be exact. it's like punk fused with doom metal, fused with grunge.

  • not at all

  • Isn't it just to big to be put in categories?

  • Shitty no-talent is what I call it. Much better bands out there doing similar music.

  • for instance?

  • name me some

  • brilliance.....

  • i think melvins are much underated and that if they had more exposure through radio and the like they would be more appreciated by more people. disturbing that most people need radio to tell them what music is good. popularity does not = quality! i can't tolerate any local radio stations. XM somewhat better. and, just because a song is of a certain type or by a certain band is no reason it's good. must be judged individually.

  • why wouldn't you just buy the albums and support real people?

  • i actually have a huge cd/dvd collection and agree. however, unfortunately, artists only get a small cut of album sale profits. they get the bulk of their cash from ticket sales and merchandising. support comes mainly from going to shows and wearing the tee shirts, etc. plus, this is advertising which perpetuates cycle. many of the bands i hear on radio all sound same there is no real originality in popular music anymore. thank god for underground music and the net for exposure.

  • MELVINS have successfully become rich men without succumbing to any type of trend

  • absolutely. i'm glad i found out about them. they have played nonstop in my vehicle since i downloaded from itunes. i think more people would buy their stuff if they had more exposure.

  • They don't need "exposure".

They're a rare case where their cult following is so massive, that they don't need exposure. They make enough money off ticket sales/merchandise sales, and it's all Independent.

It's a great standard for bands to set their sights on.

  • Give it up aic. No matter how valid your point, you cannot even appear to have an OPINION (and that is all they are) that is even comparable to that of a true "authority." Makes one feel better about themselves, you see.

  • i know. just entertaining to see such self proclaimed dogma in an open forum. interesting to see how personal opinions can become "fact" in ones own mind. i just like listening to this type music. i know people who hate it and they're still my friends with their own views (no matter how faulty..lol.)

  • those guys aren't rich. middle class at best.

  • you'd be very suprised

  • all those bands ARE heavy... once youve listened to enough heavy stop, you stop noticin, and it seems less heavy... i don't see stuff like mastodon or the melvins, or s.y.l heavy, but to other people theyre unlistenable... and ruin is fantastic

  • Heavy = Dixie Dave's bassrig

  • fantastic. they rule.

  • I'm think the melvins has their own heavy style!!!!

  • Sepultura, Slayer, & Meshuggah are NOT Heavy bands. They are extreme/intense, but not Heavy.

    WEEDEATER are Heavy.

  • what are your thoughts on lamb of god? in my limited musical knowlege i consider the song ruin (among others) to be fairly heavy. love to hear why i'm wrong on this count.

  • I mean, they've written a few rockin songs.

but like you said, I consider bands like E-Wiz & the like to be Heavy.

  • yeah, i'd not heard of EW till i saw your post. they have really taken the sabbath riffage and made it their own. pretty impressive sound. glad i discovered them. thanx! n e others i should know bout?

  • I think E-Wiz took the Sabbath aesthetic and pushed it forward.

    WEEDEATER

    EYEHATEGOD

    KYUSS

    SPIRIT CARAVAN

    THE OBSESSED

    CORRUPTED

    SONS OF OTIS

    and many more

  • its a shame how good this band is.

  • That´s exactly how I spend my free time. Hahahaha.

  • hey shoddywork, GO FUCK YOURSELF.

  • that didn't work, my comment had a miscarriage. anyway fuck it, MELVINS RULE!!

  • i can't some twat think's metallica are heavier than the melvins. WTF?

    metallica couldn'

  • why are people talkin bout metallica when they should be talkin bout melvins?? metallicas shit get over it!

  • haha, fourtoedsloth lack of education is embarrassing. claudio sanchez ripped buzz hairstyle. melvins is way older than c&c. and this is a old song. and kurt haved melvins as an influence.

  • I'm not really sure about that. I think Metallica was the heaviest band in the mainstream. For example, there were certain bands in the '80s, like Death, Possessed and Morbid Angel, that were associated with the death metal genre, so they're heavier than Metallica, even if they were not as popular. And don't forget that heaviness is not always measured in BPM (see Electric Wizard!). So, I think Melvins are as heavy as Metallica, if not heavier than Metallica.

  • you fucking suck.

metallica sucked, they weren't heavy. Death, Possessed, Morbid Angel were NOT heavy.

    HEAVY = BASS

    ELECTRIC WIZARD = HEAVY

    MELVINS = HEAVY

  • You have a very interesting defintition of 'Heavy', but I hope you realize there are very few people who share your view. Personally I beleive the word simply refers to sonic intensity, and there is no one right way of executing it. You just know it when you hear it. I think Wagner and Motzart have written some of the heaviest riffs ever.

Also, the deffinition of heavy has changed a lot over the years. Steppenwolf coined the term 'heavy metal,' so thats another thing to consider.

  • ummm, no.

"my definition" of Heavy is the only acceptable definition.

    Heavy = Weight

  • hahaha. ummmm, no. Your definition of heavy was "HEAVY = BASS" Just remember that Black Sabbath never once called themselves heavy. They tried to be the 'loudest' band in the world.

  • right.

    Heavy = weight

    bass = weight

massive walls of bass weigh down on you. get it?

    WEEDEATER

    Electric Wizard

Those are REAL HEAVY METAL bands

  • that just depends on how you engineer the recording. how about judging based on musical merit?

  • delivery. Heavy is all about delivery

  • Rockers have been using the word 'Heavy' to describe music since the 60's, and bass didn't become overly used in music until the late 80's. In music, the word heavy is synonomous with 'Extreme,' and it can't be measured with a frequency graph.

  • WRONG

    on ALL accounts

  • slayer=heavy

  • WRONG

  • OLD Slayer = Heavy, lol

    But not the heaviest

  • Down, Eyehategod, Melvins, Lamb of God, Sepultura: all heavy with good variety and complexity with interesting lyrical content. And Meshuggah for another level of complexity. Also interesting that Meshuggah's first few albums sound much like early Metallica (before they started sucking so hard!)

  • no, none of those bands are that Heavy

  • slayer are just fast, not heavy : ).

  • slayer is lyrically heavy but obviously not sludge like electric wizard, eyehategod etc. my interpretation of heavy is the degree to which a song "weighs" on you..i.e. how profound the experience. i remember hearing pantera for the first time and thinking this is as good as it gets because i related to the lyrics so much (plus great music which got more extreme with each album.)

  • hm okay, you meant it that way. I like the Vulgar Display from Pantera best i think, cause it's the most groove oriented. Hm i could never take Slayer seriously very much. I think their lyrics are just quite anti-everything and are just meant to provoke, just because of the meaning of provoking. i don't like something like this and find it a bit childish.

  • araya is into writing about war and king chose the path of horror and crime like serial killers etc. they've been pretty influential too.(lamb of god comes to mind...morton and adler are amazing!) but i agree that they went for the shock and awe with the whole blasphemy thing much like deicide and morbid angel. yeah and dime had a knack for making the sickest riffs something to move you. R.I.P.

  • Um...Fourtoed...Nirvana was a fan of The Melvins , he was their roadie. They are in no way , ripping off Nirvana . Get your facts straight .

  • Hey dipshit, these guys have been around long before Nirvana, and were an influence on bands like Nirvana. Melvins been around since early 80's. Get your facts straight kid.

  • Haha, yeah, I know, I just love fucking with music fans.

  • "fucking with music fans" is NOT leaving comments that make you look like a fucking IDIOT on youtube.

get your shit straight you fucking idiot.

  • My point. There are no people who get so needlessly and easily offended as music fans, and I personally find it funny when people overreact. Lighten up. It's just a band. As Buzz himself said, don't listen to an entertainer about important issues. Why does everyone on the internet take themselves so fucking seriously?

  • hahahaha, you so funny :) get a rock history lesson

  • so what, Nirvana is just a Creed ripoff band anyways.

  • do you wish to explain that? k thx

  • hahaha i seriously hope this is a joke and you aren't fucking serious. if so you are a complete fucking gay.

  • Nirvana's a Creed ripoff?, You do realize Creed formed the year Nirvana broke up, right?

  • agree

  • The Melvins just have such a tight sound.

Anything the Melvins did has always been 10x heavier than anything by bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden or whatever. Melvins is the true definition of heavy.

  • I'm not really sure about that. Metallica at least. In the depth's of the 80's Metallica got heavier and just plain manlier than anything in existence. This is good shit, but I think the mantle of heavy belongs in the realm of thrash metal, at least for the 80's.

  • WRONG

    HEAVY = BASS

  • Wrong, heavy = writing.

  • the writing must be executed & delivered properly

  • heavy) black sabbath, so take it from there

  • im just gonna throw out there that i persionally love the melvens and nirvana

  • and yes i realise i had a typo and spelled the melvins wrong

  • The real kings are three: King Buzzo, King Diamond and King Crimson. If I forgot someone, tell me. However, everyone is comparing The Melvins to Nirvana, but they are two different genres, the only link could be that Kurt Cobain was a fan of Melvins. I make my comparison, too: King Buzzo makes Kurt Cobain look like a noob. No, I'm not joking. But not only, Melvins crushes Nirvana on almost everything (excluding popularity!): experimentation, riffs, melodies, drumbeats, vocals, basslines, solos...

  • Ok jackasses (can that be plural?). Do your homework. Dale, the Melvins drummer, was the original drummer for Nirvana until ... Anyway, there are 2 cuts on the "Bleach" album that Dale was the rhythm master of. Duh, I wonder why there are similarities. GO FIGURE. I love you all, but go fuck yourselves.

  • No, he wasn't.

Some junkie roadie named kurt asked the Mighty Dale Crover to drum for his band's album, so he did, as a favor.

Then Kurt dropped the question on him (do you want to join our band full-time?)

and Dale was like "fuck no, I refuse to play shitty music"

and that's that, end of story.

  • Exactly, know your shit. Kurt was roadie for them. Fuck, how are you going to tell me? I was in the late 80's early 90s Seattle grunge scene.
