please everybody Mister Siepi was not a baritone or liryc Baritone ,Bass-baritone ............thats a huge diffrence!!!!!!!he had a very good technic, the best, that;s why he could sing also high things,God bless him........he had the most beautyfull male low voice !!!!!!!!!!
On the pitch question -- this is just a wild guess -- Could it have been recorded somewhere where orchestral pitch was typically higher than the norm? France possibly?
I think it was originally filmed (not recorded originally for TV, but was filmed on film stripe) at 24fps, then the TV has telecined the film stripe at 25fps with an increment in pitch and in speed. In PAL/SECAM nations (ORF it's a TV from Austria, were used PAL system), this was normal until last years.
Today it's possible, with digital technology, to have original pitch and speed (replicating one semiframe every 25, then 50 semiframe -25 frame- every second) also if the frames per second are different from the original. Actual DVD are telecinemated in this way.
In NTSC nations they have the problem when they send on air an originally PAL TV show.
All these problems are due to the differences from the three systems (cinema - PAL - NTSC).
Hey, thanks to this recording, we get to hear Siepi as the greatest lyric baritone ever! This recording plays at about A=455 but was probably recorded under A=438 or so. Too bad it doesn't sound like Siepi but his voice DOES sound very nice sped up like this....
This often happens, when movie films filmed with 24 frames per second are sent on TV with 25 frames per second. The result is nearly half a tone higher, like here.

Grande cantante, ma mi sembra in una tonalità più acuta, o mi sbaglio?

Could this be transferred at the right pitch and with correct synchronisation between sound and picture?
