wow another opinion piece, if this were painfull they would not do it period. my dogs walk on two feet and it's not "natural" either. if mankind does it then it is then natural. period , there is nothing unnatural about us working with animals and training them to do tricks. mankind is the top of the food chain and not an alien or invasive species. get a grip. there is no such thing as a circus without animals by definition. go for yourself and decide with your own eyes instead of this lie.
@circusboy90210 - The nature of slavery is you do what you are told whether or not you are in pain because if you don't you will certainly be in more pain from a beating or a whipping. Human slaves were not able to opt out of work if they were in pain. "Freaks" who were forced to participate in the "freak shows" of yesteryear were not able to opt out if they were in pain. John Pelton has elephants for one reason: to make money. If they don't do what they are told they will be beaten.
@patcuvie freaks were not forced to do anything, they participated because it made them the equivilant of millions of dollars today. They were some of the highest paid performersof their time.a few were exploited true , most werent. negative reinforcement is not the norm in the industry. aristotle said that some beings are better off as slaves than free.however Gunther Gebel Williams pets were not slaves, they were more like his children and he never hit his children that I know of, yellled yes.
@circusboy90210 -Historical facts and you kind of clash. Freaks, like the elephant man were exploited like the animals used in circuses. They did not make millions off of their exploitation and many lived very poorly. Gunther is on video many times over beating and whipping elephants. If you don't care that elephants are beaten or whipped just say so, but don't lie about the frequency. That way we can move on and neither one of us need waste any more time. Obviously you're fine w/slavery.
@patcuvie read theh whole statement a few were but most were not cruelly exploited . I have made extensive studies into this , defiantly more than you ever dreamed of doing so. some lived poorly but most made what is the equivalent of millions today. slavery is not always a bad thing and animals cannot be slaves. read Aristotle treatise on slavery. ringlings freaks had whole train cars just for themselves and a percentage of the take depending on the draw they had . facts sir not opinion.
@patcuvie you don't know mr. Gebel well enough to call him by his first name . I don't even know you or like what you stand for but I respect you as a human being (no matter what I think about your ideals) to call you by your last name since I really don't know you. (notice lack of insults as you have not done for anyone else whom does not agree with your extremist viewpoints) Don't pretend to be able to call somone you never knew by their first name it's an insult to your self .
It's only a matter of time before one of them loses it completely and goes on a rampage

I wouldn't complain about the tricks themselves as much as how they train the elephants and how the elephants live day to day.
