Love your video's and have a couple of ideas don't know weather they will work or not but it the guard was part of the base of the actual sword and came in at a angle to the handle then having a leather strapped handle then having no pommel at the bottom I think this would look great and a cool inscription - Rise and Rise again until lambs become lions - and how much would it cost to get all the gear to make a sword?
@skyrimsmadnews This all sounds great. Good creativity and thinking. Setting it all up varies in cost. Depends on how much you can improvise. The forge costs nothing if you scrounge up parts. Several hundred if you just buy one.
@epicfantasy Can you please add links at the end of your vids to the next part :) also I have been following your whole forging series and I think it would be really cool if you can start with your stock steel and try folding it a few times before you begin the drawing out.. it might make some really nice effects and lines in your metal.. just an idea.. thanks!
@stienerrecliner Thankyou for this comment. I really should have done this! I forget sometimes. Now I have gone ahead and added links to the next vid on each of these vids. Near the end. Thanks!
I have a great idea I want to share with you! When seeing the sword in its final stages, it still looks a little bland or generic. I was thinking, if you want to, why don't you inscribe text on either the pommel, hilt or blade of the sword? You could inscribe your name, but also anything else you feel should be there! A man should be proud of his creations :)
@Homemadebeats Great suggestion. Thanks. I have given a lot of thought to inscribing the blade and or pommel. I might do that. It would be a good video. Thanks.
@MrPdante Somebody gave it to me. NOt sure where he got it. Brass that size is expensive. I did see a 2" thick rod, 1 foot in length of brass. I believe it was 800 dollars.
@compyfixer Next one soon. I will be hardening the sword. Getting near the end now. Hardenign will be heating it up then dipping it in oil. Maybe tempering too, depends on how long the video is.
Ah, that pommel looks fantastic! I bet you could even chisel some designs onto it if you wanted to, but it's good. Well done! I'm looking forward to your next installment.
Cool, like the brass pommel. You could tap it & put in a skull busting point on the bottom. You could rasp some rings around the grip to give it grip & character, even inlay brass in grooves. I think a big gem set in the brass pommel on both sides would be class. You can get amathist not to much, not sure about that size, or a cz type manufactured gem that's about he same as a real one. Some nice file work on the guard edges would be cool. You could acid etch a cool design on the blade.
I like this brass pommel better. The steel would have been good, too, but I really like the brass. If you make a scabbard, you should find a way to incorporate the brass and the purple wood.
Make a bunch of swords - and next time ( when you are experienced in forging swords ) you should upload a making off of a one and ahalf handed sword - that would be really great !
Try to shape the blade straight and not like a leaf. Really like your work - keep it up ;)
Thanks again for a great video Will, not sure if you can but a blank kind of wood could be good as a handle or just something comfortable colored in gold/brass/goldmix.
The wood of the handle looks like what my atlatl is made of. It's a beautiful wood and so are the others you had in the other video. I don't know enough about this to suggest any improvements, but the cool thing is you can keep adjusting until it's just like you want it.
While I didn't care for the ebony pommel, ebony would make for a great handle. You probably have a whole collection of great handles.
Thanks. Yeah, I bought an atlatl kit in the late 80s, and about 2003 or 2004 I finally broke the thing. I have a cousin who does woodwork, so I turned the pieces over to her and she made me a new one out of purple heart wood. Living in the 'burbs I don't get to use it much. It's here beside me now, though, as it makes a great back-scratcher.
@BurningKreoss Not quite mate. You want your whole handle to be about the weight of the blade. If you put the sword on your finger just infront of the cross guard it should balance.
That means the blade will pivot easily around the cross guard giving you better leverage over the weapon.
In the future, if you left more of the metal handle part, you would drill the hole completely through the brass and hammer down the excess to hold it on.
@vinncao NO! Not Nerdgasm, he is not sad or no-lifed in any way (Unless he was actually reffering to skyrim, which I doubt he was) Ebony is in fact a type of wood that comes form a tree in India! funny huh?
I didn't take much interest in this whole blacksmithing subject at the start, only the stock removal knife, but I will admit, this sword is looking absolutely amazing and it's making me want to build a forge and actually start making one of my own.
I saw this one guy made a sword, he made the pommel out of the steel rod like you did, but he made the tang round and long enough to extend past the pommel so he could heat the tang and hammer it down over the pommel and not have to worry about pins. Guess each sword maker has there own style. The sword looks realy good.
nery nice

@300spartanswin thats called 3 in 1 oil. Its a light oil. The big thing here is to use really good drill bits. I used carbide.

You should put something between the handle and the pommel

Will, contour the grip to fit the pommel. It'll have a much better flow and ya won't have those edges of the grip hanging over the pommel.

I think a pummel is supposed to be light, otherwise it will decrease your slashing power. And it will be much easyer to parry and counter.
