Hey everyone, our recently launched music blog has a post about late-era Talk Talk we’re trying to get out there and hope you might enjoy. Just search SongStacks on Twitter.
God damnit, I love this guy. He straight up said the reason they're popular is because people in the states & Europe have bad taste. And Mark knows what he's talking about when talking about, his solo album is absolutely brilliant.
My point was that a lot of these artists think it will never end so it gives them the right to give this type of attitude. The presenter was just trying to do his job.
Good band but in the end they got what they had coming. Dropped by EMI and goodnight. As for royalties and the don't give a shit attitude that is the view taken by people that have made no money from music and live week to week. The same people that said Phil Collins sold out, I am sure his 50 mil in the bank eases the pain.
@regaltip8A FYI, Mark wanted EMI to drop him and the band. He sabotaged their videos, made an album they sued him over on the grounds it wasn't a commercially viable album (its one of their bests) and he berated EMI in the press.
By the way, Mozart didn't make much money and wasn't popular when he was alive. He died a debtor and was buried in a paupers hole and no one came to the funeral. The point is that just because some artists don't have your values, doesn't make their art less value.
Level 42 shouldn't even share the same stage as Talk Talk and Mark Hollis. Love Talk Talk and Mark Hollis. I've never seen this video before. Thanks for positing it.
@christschool Go easy with comparisons with Level 42. Those guys are top notch musicians. Talk Talk had their own style but as a live act cannot compare with the skill and musicianship of Level 42. Sadly,Mark Hollis does come across as a nob in this clip. Perhaps he is not so smug in 2011 when his income from royalties is down to zero.
@regaltip8A I did a search here on Youtube for Level 42 and I guess I shouldn't have made the remark about them as I did, I only remembered their one hit in the 80's and haven't followed their career. You're right, they are good musicians. They aren't my taste and I don't agree with the rest of your comments about Talk Talk, but Level 42 is definitely more than their one hit so I agree with you there. I don't think artist royalties has anything to do with quality of their music.
@regaltip8A , the fans don't give a shite about royalties, and I don't think Mark Hollis would either, given (as wiki says) he refused to sacrifice artistic ambition to commercial success. The one exception would be when Gwen Stefani butchered one of their songs. A sad moment, but Mark would have got a lot of royalties from it.
I think he's pissed off, because he's totally singing the wrong words to the song, though in a very artful way. Probably he was forced by contract to lip sync and decided to take advantage of the moment.
@martianrobber Exactly. Mark had a history of this. In the video for "It's my Life" you will see Mark's mouth covered by EMI with that animation. They did this because Mark didn't want to be forced into doing this video and his protest was to lip sync a different song. EMI covered it up with the animation and later sued Mark after the Talk Talk Eden album as payback.
Hollis and Talk Talk are the singularly most under rated band I can think of. They were consumate artists.
@christschool that's actually not correct. I'd love it to be; I am a massive Talk Talk faf, but in the interests of truth I have to bebunk this. Sorry!
@bittersound Actually it is correct. From The Guardian: "It's My Life, recorded in 1984 (complete with video originally mocking lip-synching by a dour Hollis, which when reshot at EMI's request became a total piss-take of lip-synching) established Talk Talk as a massive band in Europe."
I have always absolutely loved this song!! Such a great song from Talk Talk!! Mark is amazing!! Talk Talk was such an awesome and amazing band from the 80's! Missing them greatly!! We so need them back in today's time for sure! Mark totally made Talk Talk what if is with his character and amazing personality!! They sure knew how to put on a show!! Talk Talk forever!! 80's always!
If you just saw the interview without knowing it's Mark, you would say he's kinda suicidal. But behind that personality he becomes a whole different person on stage, a genius in fact! Sad but beautiful...
the funny thing is that Mark Hollis hated being a pop star. The only contemperary music he listened too was jazz and classical music. He had a reputation for being pretensious and self absorbed, as well as a hopeless prefectionist. Yet he made some of the most brilliant music of the 80s (and 90s, with Laughing Stock and his solo album). A genious
this joke might be 20 years old but it still makes me piss watching them dance with those guitars taking the piss out level 42.....fucking funny. mark hollis and his boys rocked...true rock stars.
I love the taking the piss out of Level 42 bass guitarist Mark King with the high guitars! I think that's why they needed the backing track, cos they couldn't actually play like that...but great visual joke !
adam curry would ask the same question regardless of whether it was talk talk or a potato he was interviewing. what answer does one expect to get to a question like "how does it feel to play on the same night as x, y and z"? very automated. an insult to intelligence.
@himawari2904 Mark Hollis was/is an outstanding artist. Not some sort of boy band cute/sweet lead singer. Can't believe you were up-voted for this insane comment out of place with these guys.
I couldn't choose just one of their last two albums. Maybe "I belive in you" and "Wealth" are my favourites, and "Tomorrow started" from their early times.
How incredible to see Mark actually being 'interviewed'.This proves how notoriously uncomfy he always was - and we get a closer insight to his angst and frustration.Paul's backing vocal is definitely Live,Mark is able to keep saying 'how are you, alright?' throughout - so it mean he had an open mic.His vocal sounded studio quality,so it is possible he was Live because he really did give a faithful rendition in concert.
Sorry friend but this is not live at all except for the backing vocal part.We know they could've done it live if the studio was large enough for all the band's gear. They are so good live just excellent. But hey most bands have to mine /lip synch to promote their singles.

Level 42 are the biggest pile of steaming shit imaginable - no wonder they're Helen Chamberlain's (Soccer AM) favourite band.

I'll vouch for Talk Talk being popular in the States, we stole this band.

what was this style of getting strangled by guitar in the 80;s

That was about being able to reach every fret on the instrument as opposed to wearing it as a fashion accessory.
