I find that if the putty starts getting gooey, you can pick up the residue with a larger lump of putty. Gently dab it over a couple times, and the rest of the putty should come off just fine.
Hi all!.... actually i dont make military vehicles (only civilians), but a friend does and he use liquid latex and i've seen excelent result of this, and may be it can be easier to use than the silly putty. Hope this help you!!!
Yeah I got that impression when I saw you had difficulties getting the putty off...I don't know if I'll try this method myself, but I never thought of using Silly Putty for masking.
@RiderManX0 I recommend it! It works great, particularly when you want to mask something with a lot of raised surface detail, as it drapes very well over all that and you can easily prod it into position. It took some care to get it all off, but it did all come off cleanly, with no residue. I'll definitely use it again! If I can ever find any more!
@MinimeDrummerBoi I've got the standard red-green colorblindness, which is the most common. It's more of a color weakness really, as I can see plenty of colors, even vivid reds and greens. It all gets murky with shades of reds and greens, though! I can barely see any difference in the two colors I used on this model.
I use cling film for large areas; the stuff you'd wrap sandwiches and such in. Use masking tape at the edges. Makes the job much faster, and works just as well, so long as there aren't any jutting pieces that might tear the film.
I don't know Silly Putty but if you use (blu)tac instead it can be reused from here to the day you die. Plus it can be bought in every office supply store and it's really cheap. And it's sticks to it self when you pull it off so it's much easier to get rid of.
@ModelloursWorkshop Yup, I've heard Blu-tac works great too, and I actually have a bit of it (it's not readily available here in Japan), but the Silly Putty is much more pliable and easy to work around details. Blu-tac would probably be better for aircraft camo where there's less protruding detail everywhere.
@ehakan2 Well, I'm using the exact Jietai colors from Tamiya (JGSDF Dark Green and Brown, no "gray"), so they are correct...and I put 'em exactly where Fujimi's (and my photo references) said they go...so other than my big screwup with the incomplete masking, I think it was all correct. I think!
@hobbylink First I'm sorry, my bad :). No "gray", it's "brown". Second You're right, I made a mistake, because in first attempt you used "green", in second attempt used "brown" as a base coat. This confused me ;). Looking forward to further progreses...
@ehakan2 OK! No problem...since I can hardly see the difference in the colors, I make sure to check everything as close as possible before I commit! Hopefully, I get it right!
@scorpion301 Yeah, I thought it's a little stuff...definitely much stiffer than Silly Putty. That and the fact that we can't get it here in Japan made me go with the Silly Putty...which we also can't get here, but I had some, so there we go. I think with a little more practice I can do just about anything with the Silly Putty! Just need to get my hands on some more...!
@O1egsk Ah, OK, now I know what you're asking about! Yes, it is a Russian military badge of some kind. A friend of mine picked it up as a gift during travels in Eastern Europe. I've tried to ID it, and it looks like it's either an Army or Air Force badge, and probably goes on a hat (like a cocarde, as you mentioned).
@lopuilap Well, as you saw, that was exactly my problem! I couldn't tell I was getting overspray onto the unmasked sections, which is probably due to my colorblindness...didn't see it at all until I removed the masking the first time. Then the demarcation lines and unfortunate overspray was very evident. The moral of the story, as I tried to convey in the video, is always mask everything you don't want painted, even if you think you can control the overspray! I'll never make that mistake again!
next time using the silly muddy whatever thingy
but it in the fridge or cool it down god to easily remove it
cuz It will be more hard more consestant

How many times can you re-use the silly putty?

@RiderManX0 As far as I can tell, just once! Maybe more, but it looked kind of useless to me after I got it off the tank.

Hopefully this isn't too personal, but when you say you're color blind, do you mean you can't see colors at all or just certain colors?

If you live near a art supply shop, masking fluid also does the trick. You paint it on, wait for it to dry, then peel it off
