as I understand it, during the existence of the American States the States gave away their country (authority) to form the USA and they don't live in tyranny now under the federal government, do they?
Why could it not work the same way on a higher level, where USA gives up their country/authority to form with other nations a even bigger Union?

The founding fathers didn't even want a central government at all, but because they could come to no other solution for specific needs in government to be carried out, they created a "Limited Federal Government", limited in scope, size, reach and authority by the US Constitution.
The Constitution is "the chains of government" to protect the people from the tyranny of government.
