Brill version - cool hip spontaneous impro; and that dry guitar snapped chordal texture captures the heart beats and battling wits & wills of Edith and 'The Spoon!'
MS TINA. PLEASE US ALL A FAVOR WHO ARE DYING FROM A ABSENCE OF THE THE TRUTH. MR HANCOCK KNEW FROM HIS HEART IN JOINING YOU WITH MS MITCHELL. PLEASE PLEASE COME HOME.
BRILLIANT! Tina owns the lyrics, having experienced a brilliant yet troubled "Kingpin" in her own life. Tina, please do more with Herbie. The groove, Wayne, wah wah, etc. are all on point. It's simply good music--whatever you choose to call it :-)
This is put together very well. I really like Tina's interpretation of the Canadian witness Joni Mitchell's "Edith And The Kingpin" very much.... but, I can really HEAR Cassandra Wilson singing those words and just burning this song up. I guess it really doesn't matter though as I CLEARLY got the message and Tina, Herbie, Dave, and Wayne delivered it.... ever so passionately. Again well done!
yes yes yes...a whole jazz album would make me very happy..
I am a huge Joni fan , and I have listened to this song for many years ....including some average versions...but his one is SPECIAL and I actually get the story!!
@Frisbieinstein Damn you're stupid. The woman is 70 years old. She's not even on the cover. You're not even smart enough to understand music. What do normally listen to, Power Rangers? Damn a-hole.

@21dandandan12 Explain something to me dummy... do even even understand music on any level. The drums are annoying? One of the greatest jazz musicians in the world has a musician on his album and you think you know better. Another a-hole. Go back to listening to Justin Beiber or Miliey Cyrus. Idiot.
Wow is all I can say!! Tina is smokin on this, such a simple flow coming from her on this. She should do a whole album of Joni's stuff. I'm downloading this one from Itunes right now!!
This is the first time I've heard Tina sound so real and soulful. She nailed this Joni Mitchell classic. She didn't try to change the song like so many often mistakenly do. Two masters captured the spiirt of another master WordSmith.
Love this cut...pure genius...poignant, soulful masterfully done...Herbie Hancock is a legend, transcends time & genre, Tina Turner perfect pitch for this cut & the incomparable Wayne Shorter on sax...don't even have 2 check the credits for that info...his sound is unmistakable like all the masters
To omriee- The point is to appreciate both or at least have a preference.......Of course no one can come close to JM's version, TT and HH paid a well respected and beautiful tribute to her. Nice job.
Joni! They did tribute to her and the whole CD is great. It's nice to hear Herbie's great arrangements of the tunes on this CD. He really knew and understood where she was coming from, that was obvious. Tina does lay this out! He knew she would.
I heard that Tina and Herbie actually dont speak because of the division of Nichiren SHosu and the SOka Gakkai International. I wonder if there any truth to that...two buddhist, both legendary performers, not speaking over this? ANyone know any truth to any of it?
I don't think so! I also heard that Herbie Hancock was at Tina's house in Zurich. So who knows! I'm a soka gakkai member I don't know if Tina is a member of soka gakkai or a member of Nichiren Soshu.

I also read in an interview to Wayne Shorter,in a Spanish paper, that, Herbie,Tina and himself were, "buddies" and they don't have jaleous of each others... I think Tina's has been a little bit independient of both divisions...
Thanks Birkebine. I´m a jazz musician, and I can tell you, that´s exactly how so many view jazz music. The world of jazz sure could do with more open-minded folks like yourself. Peace.
I think many people (including me, until fairly recently) too easily dismiss jazz, having heard only very little of it. Like someone saying, I don't like rock, after hearing only one album, by Uriah Heap. Jazz is so broad a musical form, I can't imagine anyone not liking some style within it. And note, too, many hard-core jazz fans can't stand certain kinds of jazz.
Tina has been vocally moving back to soft pop, soul and jazz in latest decade. Please check "Confidential" on 96's WildestDreams album or Something Special in 2005 Open Arms. Many Tina fans like me wait for a jazz album after listening this outstanding rendition of this Joni Mitchell song, a master on her own. Tina can be THE MOST complete female singers of our time.
I dont even think these artist realize how much they encourage and inspire members who chant nam myoho renge kyo, even in rural small town groups all over the world...thanks to both of the both of them...Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, KOSEN-RUFU 2008!!!

Im sure there are many talented and famous Buddhists that we have never heard of (the general public i mean) I have met many talented Buddhists over the years....what a wonderful practice it is........
This is a great interpretation by Tina. But then she has incredible chops, & interpretive ability, so why should it be a surprise even if Joni's songs aren't her typical fare. Anyway it just points out what a masterpiece of prose the lyrics of this song are. They tell a better story in several verses than most novels are able to in 300 pages. On top of that the music Joni set them to is right there in the best jazz tradition of Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life. Herbie knows!
Was so surprised & delighted to hear Tina singing Jazz/Pop, as written by musical & lyrical genius, Joni Mitchell, and accompanied by Jazz greats, Hancock & Shorter. Love it. Wonderful to hear Tina being versatile & doing something completely different. Hope she does more....
I still love best Joni's original on "Hissing of Summer Lawns" album: beautiful, haunting music w/perceptive, descriptive, poignant lyrics, so achingly sung & beautifully played by Joni & co.
Tina really pulled it off nicely...usually Herbie will take advantage of an average vocal by overplaying, but she kicked his ass and kept him at bay :)
Wow, I clicked on as a naysayer..Tina doing Joni puh-leeze but all I am left with is *wow* she pulls it off and pulls out elements of her voice I haven't heard in years. I may have to buy this album now.
My word, this song is as cool as a summer on Pluto. The instrumentation is just beautiful and I gotta say, Tina sounds like those female jazz singer of old here. Her voice is just gorgeous and I was stuck on her voice as she sang. Wow! And, the lyrics to the song, heavy! Shows that someone actually used their mind while writing them. This song is a certified classic!
Hurray for the Grammys recognizing such a great album. It's hopeful to music legends still producing valid and interesting work.
Phil Ramone recently produced a standard cd for Olivia Newton-John and it's amazing what a producer and songwriter can do with the instrument of a song stylists voice.
Give Canada's Amy Sky a listen to what she's done for the latest cd 'Grace & Gratitude' for ONJ too.
Legends are Legends for a reason. I love this Tina version of Genius Joni. Thank-you Herbie!
Absolutely equilie. It's good to see artists covering Joni Mitchell's music although, very difficult to do as well as the originals. Joni's music seems much more suited to jazz interpretations and that's what makes "River the joni letters" such a special album for me. Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock seem to understand Joni's music on a level that allows them to be creative without losing the original essence.
I think "River..." is a lot better than "Shine" but I'm an old jazzer. I think there's enough for everyone on "River..." so I would recommend it for all.
The counterpoint between Tina's husky sexy styling, Shorter's plaintive tenor and Hancock's lyricism on the piano is compelling. However, clearly this is Tina's song. ..Bravo..!!!
It seems like it was recorded years ago, because her voice has a sound quality of a younger person. Sorry, I dont want to be demeaning with that comment. It is that voice changes with the years, but in this case, her voice is great!!! And I love it!!!
I love Tina Turner. The passion and power in her singing is fascinating. And in this song, it is so smoooooth...., ahhhh..., creamy and velvety...
Uff, come on Tina, give us more jazz, please, cause you are so good...
Please, a whole album of Tina doing Joni. Please!

Tina needs to do a JAZZ CD

Tina's voice is amazing on this song. Such a pure and controlled vocal. I'm a HUGE fan of hers and I've never heard her sing like this!

I was a Joni Mitchell fan from the beginning, but it wasn't until this album (the hissing of summer lawns) that I realized she was a true pioneer.
THIS WAS IN THE EARLY 1970'S !!!!
Thanks Herbie for showing people how great she is.

Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock seem to understand Joni's music on a level that allows them to be creative without losing the original essence.

that's it, I'll have to get this album.
Right now I'm lost in 'Shine', which took awhile to get into, but which is hauntingly beautiful and spare.

Her voice sounds incredible.

While I truly enjoyed this version, the original is absolute PERFECTION.
I still remember the day I discovered Hissing of Summer Lawns . . . It's what got me into Joni's AMAZING music . . .
