  • Please, a whole album of Tina doing Joni. Please!

  • i'm smelling melodyne high at 2:12

  • What a gift to the world! Thank you Tina Turner & Herbie Hancock's musicians for the brilliant version of this Joni Mitchell classic

  • In this perfect moment, my senses are roundly filled. Peaches, and the hips of the rose. Y'all nailed it.

  • This is a brilliant track and the fact that my 9 year old son picked it out for me to buy because he liked the track, makes it even better. He likes some other great artists too. Donald Byrd, Marvin Gaye, George Benson, Lonnie Liston Smith and The Originals to name but a few.

  • @marcandsebe You're 9 son has a really good ear:)

  • Wow.

    Wow.

    Holy smokes.

    ...wow.

  • 115k views, and Justin Bieber's Baby has over 578 million. What a world!

  • @Margoil Let it go already.

  • zeer verrassend (goed)

  • wasn't Shorter's playing outrageously brilliant

  • Awesome!!!!!!

  • Brilliant & beautiful...

  • i love how she said glixing

  • OMG! one of my all time favorite songs ever, hey live in Dallas, if ANYONE see's a show with THIS type of Jazz, please hit me up! please, i check on a regular basis, but local info is at fail...

  • Please Tina do a jazz album. You're very good!

  • Tina can sing anything. She is a Living Legend. Herbie Hancock is Brilliant. Tina needs to do a complete Jazz Album. This song is fantastic. Joni Mitchell did the Original and she was fantastic.

  • love it

  • Brill version - cool hip spontaneous impro; and that dry guitar snapped chordal texture captures the heart beats and battling wits & wills of Edith and 'The Spoon!'

  • There should be laws against butchering Joni Mitchell

  • Tina owns this.

  • MS TINA. PLEASE US ALL A FAVOR WHO ARE DYING FROM A ABSENCE OF THE THE TRUTH. MR HANCOCK KNEW FROM HIS HEART IN JOINING YOU WITH MS MITCHELL. PLEASE PLEASE COME HOME.

  • Joni - Herbie - Tina - now there's a winning combination! Great version. I can see why this was Album of the Year.

  • OMG Tina, I need more of this from you.

  • My Godmother can sing ANYTHING!!!!

  • its not easy to listen to a joni classic done by someone else-- but this one gets its--hits the nail on the head--brilliant rendition

  • BRILLIANT! Tina owns the lyrics, having experienced a brilliant yet troubled "Kingpin" in her own life. Tina, please do more with Herbie. The groove, Wayne, wah wah, etc. are all on point. It's simply good music--whatever you choose to call it :-)

  • This is put together very well. I really like Tina's interpretation of the Canadian witness Joni Mitchell's "Edith And The Kingpin" very much.... but, I can really HEAR Cassandra Wilson singing those words and just burning this song up. I guess it really doesn't matter though as I CLEARLY got the message and Tina, Herbie, Dave, and Wayne delivered it.... ever so passionately. Again well done!

  • Simply Amazing......

  • Damn Tina is singing her ass off.

  • yes yes yes...a whole jazz album would make me very happy..

I am a huge Joni fan , and I have listened to this song for many years ....including some average versions...but his one is SPECIAL and I actually get the story!!

Tina is a reader of the lyric ....

  • Tina looks kinda old on that album cover.

  • @Frisbieinstein Thats Herbie

  • @Frisbieinstein Damn you're stupid. The woman is 70 years old. She's not even on the cover. You're not even smart enough to understand music. What do normally listen to, Power Rangers? Damn a-hole.

  • @Frisbieinstein --that's becaus she IS old ding dong-- dont know too many present day great grandmas who can sing like this--alittle respect would be nice--its an incredible version

  • @Frisbieinstein Where's the cover?

    Saskia

  • Wow. This song. Is this Wayne Shorter on sax?

  • @Errordemn6 yes he is

  • @Errordemn6 That's Shorter, one of Herbie's favorite's

  • I love this song. It's one of my favorite Joni songs and Tina Turner really does a great job. The drums are a little annoying tho

  • @21dandandan12 Explain something to me dummy... do even even understand music on any level. The drums are annoying? One of the greatest jazz musicians in the world has a musician on his album and you think you know better. Another a-hole. Go back to listening to Justin Beiber or Miliey Cyrus. Idiot.

  • Wow is all I can say!! Tina is smokin on this, such a simple flow coming from her on this. She should do a whole album of Joni's stuff. I'm downloading this one from Itunes right now!!

  • wow! Tina should sing much, much more of "stuff like that" =)

  • This is the first time I've heard Tina sound so real and soulful. She nailed this Joni Mitchell classic. She didn't try to change the song like so many often mistakenly do. Two masters captured the spiirt of another master WordSmith.

  • lirics, music , singing, playing !!!!!!!

    fantastic!

  • @civorec79 Don't forget to credit the great JONI who inspired and wrote this music. Joni is a once in a hundred years composer.

  • Love this cut...pure genius...poignant, soulful masterfully done...Herbie Hancock is a legend, transcends time & genre, Tina Turner perfect pitch for this cut & the incomparable Wayne Shorter on sax...don't even have 2 check the credits for that info...his sound is unmistakable like all the masters

  • Pure Genius from Herbie and Tina.......SOUL for those who have truly lived.............

  • From:3:41 to 3:57

swing if you do not have blood, you're at home

    Herbie "ART "Hancock

  • Tina's voice absolutely gives this song so much more character. A beautiful rendition.

    Love, love, LOVE!

  • I totally agree. Lovely

  • Check out the Mumbo Gumbo uk version ... fab

  • this is one of my most favorite albums of all time

  • This is wonderful! I love JM and The Hissing Of Summer Lawns, so to discover such a great new version by HH and TT has made my day. :)

  • This is amazing!

  • i love this

  • nice song man :D

  • To omriee- The point is to appreciate both or at least have a preference.......Of course no one can come close to JM's version, TT and HH paid a well respected and beautiful tribute to her. Nice job.

  • amazing Tina is the bomb . I'm an old old Joni fan and am so knocked away by this recording!

  • you cant compare apples with oranges.

  • yeh but, i think we can compare tina turner to joni???????? peace!

  • with jaco! :P and pat! woop woop!

  • I remeber the first time I heard this, I was floored. I never knew that Tina could sing like this. I am still awed by this song:O

  • Love this song!!!!

  • Beautifully done. The lyrics could so easily apply to Ike Turner in some ways.

  • this is miles ahead of Costello's version. Big deal Elvis can't sing, no matter how much he wants to, neither can I. Life goes on.

But neiter are within light years of Mitchel's original version. One of my favorites of her albums and particular songs.

  • I agree. Costello's version was awful.

  • Way better than Elvis Costello's tepid and uninspired cover!

  • additional info: EC does a good version live with Herbie on his TV show, Spectacle,

  • wow - is there anything that Tina can't sing?? This is simply amazing!

  • Premio Grammy al Álbum del Año en 2008

    Dios bendiga a Herbie Hancock!!

  • Joni! They did tribute to her and the whole CD is great. It's nice to hear Herbie's great arrangements of the tunes on this CD. He really knew and understood where she was coming from, that was obvious. Tina does lay this out! He knew she would.

  • Really great!! Tina is better than ever!!!!

  • Great! I love Joni, this is fantastic!

  • I heard that Tina and Herbie actually dont speak because of the division of Nichiren SHosu and the SOka Gakkai International. I wonder if there any truth to that...two buddhist, both legendary performers, not speaking over this? ANyone know any truth to any of it?

  • I don't think so! I also heard that Herbie Hancock was at Tina's house in Zurich. So who knows! I'm a soka gakkai member I don't know if Tina is a member of soka gakkai or a member of Nichiren Soshu.

  • I am SGI US also, she is very ambigious about the whole thing, she does deserve some privacy. I dont know that it really matters, i started as a templehood members many yrs ago. I just assumed she was SGI. Others are speculating that she stayed w/ templehood, that doesnt sound logical.

  • @sharihotsu78 she is a member of soka gakkai, she talks about it all the time!

  • I also read in an interview to Wayne Shorter,in a Spanish paper, that, Herbie,Tina and himself were, "buddies" and they don't have jaleous of each others... I think Tina's has been a little bit independient of both divisions...

  • @boomboominspace on their level musically and spiritually is talking needed?

  • this is hot i willdefinetly sample it

I was mad when he won over Graduation but now i know why But what about the other two times kanye lost

  • the original is great, but this is also just as good!!

  • Thanks Birkebine. I´m a jazz musician, and I can tell you, that´s exactly how so many view jazz music. The world of jazz sure could do with more open-minded folks like yourself. Peace.

  • I think many people (including me, until fairly recently) too easily dismiss jazz, having heard only very little of it. Like someone saying, I don't like rock, after hearing only one album, by Uriah Heap. Jazz is so broad a musical form, I can't imagine anyone not liking some style within it. And note, too, many hard-core jazz fans can't stand certain kinds of jazz.

  • Joni does love this. See "Joni Mitchell on the Andrew Marr Show Part 2."

  • I never quite liked jazz, but this song, there's so much feeling in it, it really shattered my close-mindedness.

  • Very true. I like Jazz but in small doses. This is wonderful!

  • This version is outstanding. Now I know why this album won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year!

  • I love this Joni Mitchell song.

Tina Turner makes a great work singing this song. Really excellent !! (I'm not a Tina's fan, but I must admit that she has a great voice !!)

  • it's jazz??? isn't that the point?

  • Never liked Tina's bombastic singing style, but honestly this is great!

  • I love Tina's bombastic singing style (she does it so well, so why not?) but I do agree with you, that her performance here is smooth and nuanced.

  • OMG!TINA sings JAZZ!

  • TINA...PLEASE do an entire jazz album!

  • Tina has been vocally moving back to soft pop, soul and jazz in latest decade. Please check "Confidential" on 96's WildestDreams album or Something Special in 2005 Open Arms. Many Tina fans like me wait for a jazz album after listening this outstanding rendition of this Joni Mitchell song, a master on her own. Tina can be THE MOST complete female singers of our time.

  • Okay I HAVE to buy this album

  • Joni has to love this.

  • Joni is a Tina Turner's fan :)

  • Tina can sing everything¡¡¡

  • Tina still has her trademark, powerful voice

  • I dont even think these artist realize how much they encourage and inspire members who chant nam myoho renge kyo, even in rural small town groups all over the world...thanks to both of the both of them...Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, KOSEN-RUFU 2008!!!

  • man i love Tina....i chant so much after listening to her songs...Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

  • Herbie aint afraid to mix it all up. Gorgeous groove and instrumentation..Tina ..Brilliant!! Sings like she seen it all and she probably has.

  • simply exquisite!

  • Wow. What a fantastic version of a fantastic song. Joni, Herbie and Tina. What a combination. Gorgeous.

  • tina MUST do jazz!

  • I have never heard an application of Tina's ability that I felt was aimed at adults. It's high time and really special.

  • hissing of Summer Lawns" was a revelatory album and I think Tina is singing about her and Ike. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

  • Awesome, Tina still has it!! LUV TINA SHE'S AWESOME

  • You don't no anything about music just be quiet

  • Tina is going back on tour! She will announce it on Oprah May 8th!!!!!

  • Brilliant. Wish She would sing more this kind of songs. This is a fantastic version of Joni's classic.

  • Tina should sing more songs like this one. If she does she can go on performing in a different way for another ten maybe twenty years.

  • uffff

  • Great!

  • so I am working on an acoustic version of this song now.. cos it's so beautiful.

  • This is beautiful!! Im not 2 fond of the music, a bit 2 random 4 my tastes but TINA!1 OMG!!! Nice vibrations, a few higher notes. very sensual singing. LUV IT. almost cried when i heard her voice crack at the very end though:( my queen is after all almost 70. long live anna mae!!!

  • i actually loved when she does that, she does it alot now. it adds something to the song, ya know?

  • hi, im searchin people for goin' 2gether at his show in Perugia (Italia) in july 2008, thanks. contact me at my profile.

  • This proves why Tina is simply the best. She sings rock, pop,r&b, and now jazz. When I bought this on I tunes I was shocked that she can sing jazz. I just listens to Joni's verison and I hated it. It had no soul what so ever! Tina you are the BEST!

  • I never heard her sing like this. Her voice is unmistakeable. Love it.

  • "Sophomore jive, from Victims of type writers the band sounds like type writers." Brilliant song writing by Joni; beautiful rendition by Tina!

  • I bought this album when it just came out, from ITUNES, and the first I heard I fell in love with the whole album. There are not too many artist out here no matter the genre that can make a whole album good. This album is definitely worth buying.

  • i just uploaded the original version of this song.jonis version

  • anything by joni mitchell is a masterpeice, and i love the fact that tina was picked for one of my favorite songs by joni!!

  • I like this a lot. But it pales in comparison to Joni's version on "The Hissing of Summer Lawns".

  • Joni's lyric plus Tina's interpretation plus Herbie doing Herbie almost equaled me having a car accident. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

'One by one they bring his renegade stories to her, his crimes and his glories to her. In challenge they look on..." Say what?!!!

  • Good vibrations from a legend singing a legend song!

  • I bought this primarily for this song, WOW TINA TURNER!!!!!!!!!

  • Cool. Fab. Groovy. Great. Hmmm.

  • Tina is off the chain on this track....

  • this is one of the most beautiful things I've heard

  • Tina pleasee make a jazz album your voice is very good even after nearly 50 years singing + rocking.

    LOVE YEAH TINA

  • i love this song by tina so much,as i love joni mitchell to death and that hissing of summer lawns album.

  • yes, Tina cant quit yet, she has more work to do

  • Joni loves Tina, that´s why Herbie Hancock contacted Tina to sing on this tribute album! He also said in a recent interview that he loved to do a whole jazz album with Tina! YES, PLEEEEASE!!!

  • I totally agree, please Tina make a jazz album with Herbie! Her voice is perfect for it!

  • Herbie and Tina,...wow what a buddhist meeting that must have been!!!!! Nam myoho renge kyo

  • Don't forget Wayne Shorter in that buddhist meeting

  • Im sure there are many talented and famous Buddhists that we have never heard of (the general public i mean) I have met many talented Buddhists over the years....what a wonderful practice it is........

  • Im sure there are many talented and famous Buddhists that we have never heard of (the general public i mean) I have met many talented Buddhists over the years....what a wonderful practice it is........

  • tina sounds so beautiful. herbie is stunnin as usual

  • Grammy of the year!!

  • awesome awesome awesome

  • 'The Jazz Queen'

  • Tina needs to do a JAZZ CD

  • This is a great interpretation by Tina. But then she has incredible chops, & interpretive ability, so why should it be a surprise even if Joni's songs aren't her typical fare. Anyway it just points out what a masterpiece of prose the lyrics of this song are. They tell a better story in several verses than most novels are able to in 300 pages. On top of that the music Joni set them to is right there in the best jazz tradition of Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life. Herbie knows!

  • Was so surprised & delighted to hear Tina singing Jazz/Pop, as written by musical & lyrical genius, Joni Mitchell, and accompanied by Jazz greats, Hancock & Shorter. Love it. Wonderful to hear Tina being versatile & doing something completely different. Hope she does more....

I still love best Joni's original on "Hissing of Summer Lawns" album: beautiful, haunting music w/perceptive, descriptive, poignant lyrics, so achingly sung & beautifully played by Joni & co.

  • Tina really pulled it off nicely...usually Herbie will take advantage of an average vocal by overplaying, but she kicked his ass and kept him at bay :)

  • THE QUEEN THE QUEEN THE QUEEN !!!!

  • Tina is the Queen HA I hope Aretha dont lash out at me.

Keep up the good work Tina.

  • Tina's phrasing is great. 'Some song, some mysterious song...

  • Maybe Herbie could get Tina to cover RAISED ON ROBBERY!!!

  • Tina's voice is amazing on this song. Such a pure and controlled vocal. I'm a HUGE fan of hers and I've never heard her sing like this!

  • Wow, I clicked on as a naysayer..Tina doing Joni puh-leeze but all I am left with is *wow* she pulls it off and pulls out elements of her voice I haven't heard in years. I may have to buy this album now.

  • Tina is a great singer!

    More jazz please Tina

  • My word, this song is as cool as a summer on Pluto. The instrumentation is just beautiful and I gotta say, Tina sounds like those female jazz singer of old here. Her voice is just gorgeous and I was stuck on her voice as she sang. Wow! And, the lyrics to the song, heavy! Shows that someone actually used their mind while writing them. This song is a certified classic!

  • I was a Joni Mitchell fan from the beginning, but it wasn't until this album (the hissing of summer lawns) that I realized she was a true pioneer.

THIS WAS IN THE EARLY 1970'S !!!!

Thanks Herbie for showing people how great she is.

  • Hurray for the Grammys recognizing such a great album. It's hopeful to music legends still producing valid and interesting work.

Phil Ramone recently produced a standard cd for Olivia Newton-John and it's amazing what a producer and songwriter can do with the instrument of a song stylists voice.

Give Canada's Amy Sky a listen to what she's done for the latest cd 'Grace & Gratitude' for ONJ too.

Legends are Legends for a reason. I love this Tina version of Genius Joni. Thank-you Herbie!

  • Best Album of the Year!

  • I really like this, much better than Joni's

  • Absolutely equilie. It's good to see artists covering Joni Mitchell's music although, very difficult to do as well as the originals. Joni's music seems much more suited to jazz interpretations and that's what makes "River the joni letters" such a special album for me. Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock seem to understand Joni's music on a level that allows them to be creative without losing the original essence.

  • that's it, I'll have to get this album.

Right now I'm lost in 'Shine', which took awhile to get into, but which is hauntingly beautiful and spare.

  • I think "River..." is a lot better than "Shine" but I'm an old jazzer. I think there's enough for everyone on "River..." so I would recommend it for all.

  • Amazing interpretation!

  • The counterpoint between Tina's husky sexy styling, Shorter's plaintive tenor and Hancock's lyricism on the piano is compelling. However, clearly this is Tina's song. ..Bravo..!!!

  • Tina sounds more at home in this jazz vein,

she should have been jazz 20 years ago!

She sounds great! keep it coming!

  • this version is awesome her voice is so beautiful.

  • Her voice sounds incredible.

It seems like it was recorded years ago, because her voice has a sound quality of a younger person. Sorry, I dont want to be demeaning with that comment. It is that voice changes with the years, but in this case, her voice is great!!! And I love it!!!

I love Tina Turner. The passion and power in her singing is fascinating. And in this song, it is so smoooooth...., ahhhh..., creamy and velvety...

Uff, come on Tina, give us more jazz, please, cause you are so good...

  • incredible, incredible!

  • I agree Tina's voice is great.

Theres rumours that Tina will be making a big comeback 2008.

  • I've always regarded Tina as a great singer pity she sang all that euro - pop rubbish.

please, please Tina make a jazz album.

  • While I truly enjoyed this version, the original is absolute PERFECTION.

I still remember the day I discovered Hissing of Summer Lawns . . . It's what got me into Joni's AMAZING music . . .
