  • I concur: he's playing a Bb three valve picc. Played with a nice, light style, not muscled like so many American trumpet players I've heard. The sound quality suggests a moderately shallow mouthpiece, and close microphone. A very tasty peformance from one of the top trumpeters in the world.

  • I'm pretty sure he's playing a Bb picc , I'd be happy to post a fingering chart and an ear training manual for those believing otherwise ;)

The sound difference is due to the space. Have you ever played or been in one of those studios? They are a ridiculously dry acoustic.

Hofs sounded beautiful as usual. What great musicality and sound.....truly remarkable stuff. I don't know where you found it but thanks for posting!

  • @jvand678 I believe you are correct. I studied the fingering, then played the first few bars on a Scherzer - Bb side. It is a match. The three valves limit the range, but this piece falls within it. I recently heard this with violin, but Hofs does it more justice. I suppose he just strolls into the Thein factory and says "fix me up a 3-valve, Bb picc.". By lunch, it's done... And he plays it that evening. Jurgen Klier made me a 1--A - 3.8 mpce in minutes!

  • Toll!

No bullshit about horn or mouthpiece!

I would say: don't try this at home.

  • @paultrompeta . Your vitriolic response is a serious strike against any comment you might utter. You totally ignore the technical side, advance nothing on the musical side. Notwithstanding, I did try this in my home. I am fully aware of the stature of a player such as Hofs, and that at age 74, with dentures, my former level of competence will never be reclaimed. I know my limitations; you will never know yours. Perhaps medication could help...

  • The small volume of sound: a Thein 3-valve C piccolo trumpet? I.ve heard a C Scherzer rotary - similarly smaller sound. Mpce will produce substantially different sound, both volume and tone, but in this instance, I think the horn's key explains it. I have a rotary Scherzer, and the difference between a Schilke 11A and a Klier 5E (on the A side) is discernible, but there is no mistaking that it is not the same horn.

  • sehr geil!^^
