Whenever I hear Rich Mullins, I feel the presence of the Holy Spirit, and it hits me with the force of a runaway truck. RIP Rich, I hope your leading the choir in Heaven!
Rich Mullins is the Godfather of our modern day Christian music that we not only hear on our Christian radio programs but now even sing all over in our churches and at our church Family Camps. Love truly knows no bounds, and now he is singing for our savior! Thank you Lord for Rich Mullins and the music he left, May it be a blessing in your ears for generations!
I am a prairie girl, hailing from the Texas Panhandle. This is one of the few songs I have ever heard to express how I feel about the winds, the storms, and the harsh beauty of my home. 'I feel the thunder in the sky--See the sky about to rain--And with the prairies I am calling out your name.'
I'm not even a Christian, I'm pagan and I love a lot of this guy's music. Back in the 90's when I still went to church I had the opportunity to see him live, great show. He had a genuine humility and love which are sorely lacking from many people, artist or not, Christian or not.

@ghdfhsfnfgbadfhsfh God is not a self absorbed, have you ever heard of Jesus? The reason everything praises Him is because he deserves it for being a wonderful, powerful, and loving god.
This song is the reason I know what the Keeper of the Plains is. It's in Kansas, at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers. They have a cool little pyrotechnic thing that goes off around it two or three times in the evening/night, too. It's called the Ring of Fire. It's pretty awesome.
Thank you t4soshine for pointing out "an Arrow Pointing to Heaven". People, You MUST READ THIS BOOK. After Reading it, Read it Again. Then pass it on. This book will challenge you, move you, and then change your preceptions of what it means to live as a Christian. At least it did so for me!!!
Great Video!! I'm from Nebraska, and going out to the Sandhills - there is NOTHING more beautiful, or FREE!!!! Yeah, the Ocean "thunders" and the Mountains are His Majesty, but the Prairie, the Open Plains, wide and vast are where He 'whispers' in tall grass and silently calls our name... and calls to us "COME."
I saw Rich Mullins waaaaay back when he was the opening act for Amy Grant when she was at the Top of the pile in CCM. I was mesmerized back then as now. This particular song here has images so unbelievable rich and beautiful they never fail to resonate. I was attending Deacon classes for the LCMS shortly after 911, and would play this song endlessly in my CD Player as I rode the Uptown A train to w59th street. GREAT memories....
2 Corinthians 5 7(For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
I saw Rich Mullins several times when performed in Scottsbluff NE. He was amazing and such a spiritual kind soul. I will never forget when he performed this song. He was up on stage sitting on a stool, barefoot and singing his heart out. I'll never ever forget.
Amen!!! Makes my heart long for my eternal home....
Rich Mullins, can't wait to see you and give you a big ol' hug, brother! Thanks for the incredible, worshipful_ music you gave us while you walked on earth...
Thank you, Lord, for gifting Rich so graciously, and for sharing him with us for a while... Thank you for the glimpses he gave us of You through his beautiful music!
I love the dulcimer on this song, but I've been looking for one of his songs that he plays a classic piano song before he starts singing, and for the life of me I just can't remember it....anyone know what I'm talking about?
"Sing Your Praise to the Lord" is a lot of dulcimer prior to piano. If you are looking for piano only, then check out "My Deliverer" or "If I Stand"...they are the only "famous" songs that are piano driven at the beginning that I could find.
I have, of course, heard this song before. This is the first time that I HAVE HEARD THIS SONG! I've said it before that this man was some kind of modern age John the Baptist. I only wish now that I listened to him when he was with us. We DO need another like him. His music continues to move and reach me.
What people say of him is amazing, yes. Actually, there is a biography of Rich; it's called "An Arrow Pointing to Heaven", I think. Haven't gotten to read it yet.
I wholeheartedly agree with your modern age John the Baptist comparison.... Can't think of a more apt description!!! A sort of prophet/poet.... and what an incomparable musician! Thank God He gave us Rich for that short while.... Oh, how he blessed us & continues to do so....
@RNParamedic03 Amen! I think his "secret" is what he said about God's grace (u can listen to it here on youtube ("Grace" -Rich Mullins)... he said how much he realizes he needs God's grace and how much he relies on Him, who has such great things in store for us! I think that's what all of us need to completely do...imagine the world if we did!
The simplicity of the hammered dulcimer with the amazing descriptive words Rich used, makes this my favorite song of his. How could you not call out praises to God after hearing that.
As a pilot, trough the work week i can here this song and i am again aloft. thank you Rich Mullins, and Mark Heard, thank you for the music you left us.
I agree 100%. Many people don't understand what he's talking about. This is personal to me because my father used to take care of buffalo in southwest Kansas and he used to take me to feed them. Also if you ever driven during a rain storm while listening to this, it takes on a whole new meaning.
When I saw Rich perform live he had the audience all close their eyes and he simulated a rain storm passing over by utilizing effects made from the instruments on stage. I believe he did this right before playing this song. I am from San Francisco, but I fully understand the meaning of this song. The prairies have some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
Jesus paid such a price for us to simply call out His name. It's a debt that eternity would not be long enough for me to pay Him back... Thank you God!!
One thing I love about Rich Mullins is that, while alot of secular artists tend to treat nature like God, Rich Mullins understands that nature was all made to praise the Lord.
Look forward to seeing and singing with Rich Mullins in eternity in the presence of God and His people. Pray that more and more people will come to accept the eternal hope of sins forgiven through Jesus Christ. Thanks for posting this beautiful song.
In late September 1997, Rich was driving through Illinois. At one moment, the Jeep flipped over, and Rich was thrown in to the oncoming path of a 18 wheeler. The accident took place on a Friday. Scheduled for the next Monday was a ceremony for Richs official induction into the Catholic Church.
One day soon all of the believers will get to sing and dance and shout for joy without ever getting tired a whole lot more according to the word of God. To my brothers and sisters in Christ I love you so very much I'd take the bullet for you. As for the non believers the same goes for you. Jesus loves all.
If you study the word of God closely ( Bible). It says that God is a patient God. He gave the Amalekites 700 years to turn from their wicked ways. The problem with non believers is that they're so full of pride they think their views about Gods word are right when they're not rooted in Gods word. There is no greater joy than the joy found in Christ Jesus who died on the cross and rose on the 3rd day. Praise be to Jesus Christ who is the only truth and the way to the life ( John 14:6).
Dude... Christianity is all about a personal relationship. It isn't about religion. The base teaching of Christ was to love one another as yourself. That's really the most important thing to remember. All of the dogma, and rules, and things were greatly exaggerated throughout time, as each translation of the bible gets more and more twisted.
I love my god, not because I fear his wrath, but because of all the good he has done for me, and all the good he will do long after I'm gone.
The mercy of the LORD is great. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. All deserve the punishment of death, for there is not one who is righteous, no, not even one. Who then can be saved? With man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible. God's mercy extends to those who are condmned by man, including Hitler, Stalin, the Amalakites, and every man, woman, child, and infant. (Born and unborn) All will be raised up on the last day to eternal life.
This song makes me cry....You can quote from whatever bible verse you want to, but as long you BELEIVE, then to me, and to HIM, thats all that matters. Stop all the arguing and lets all praise HIM

I believe in the baby-killing god Yahweh:
This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.'[1 Samuel 15:2-4]
I believe that Yahweh is the creation of a primitive bronze-age society, that was merciless in war.
The reason for the destruction of the Amalekites was to annihilate sin. God cannot tolerate sin. The New Testament warned that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. A little sin will destroy many. If people came to your village, pillaging and plundering, killing, mutilating, and defiling the ones that you loved, you wouldn't try to defend the village? It's easy to criticize from the outside, but put yourself in the Jew's position. Since you are into scripture, read all of Matt. 25.
its pretty easy to see what Rich was thinking when He wrote lyrics. He tells you in each work He did and shows you where in Gods Word He found the insperation.
Rich Mullins was not tall, but he was and is, a giant among men. His heart for Christ was reflected back to him by the hearts of the Native Children that he taught. To me, he is the Christian World's John Denver, because he had SUCH a huge heart for the land that the Lord gave us to live on, and had all the words and talent to express what most of us feel and cannot say about the wonder and majesty of God's Love and this Earth. We love you Rich and we miss you terribly!! You are a true legend!!
I met rich in 1988 and he told this was his favorite bible verse:
Moses was angry with the officers of the army who returned from battle. "Have you allowed all the women to live? They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and turned the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. Now kill all the boys and kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.[Num 31:14-18]
Well now that I'm thinking about it, this might have been the verse Rich had in mind:
This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.' [1 Samuel 15:2-4]
Rich mullins spent his life helping the poor and weak. All you can do is make up lies about him and for what reason? To self glorify? To spread your political propaganda? You are truely a sad person. You know the crazy radical christians donated over one trillion dollars to starving people last year alone? Why don't you make a pass time of reading the bible vs just googling key words try actually reading the bible or at least that chapter.
Rich spoke of your god's family values: Notice how the woman & kids can't choose to stay with the husband according to your god: If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for 6 years. But in the 7th year, he shall go free, paying nothing. If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him kids, the woman and her kids shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. [Ex. 21:2-6]
thats not what that says. The bible talking of hebrew law not christian law. Also, it doesn't say women and children can't stay with their father. It says that the man who sold himself into servatude would be free to go but the rest of the family would have to honor the contract. These were not slaves they were hired employees with contracts.
Again, rich help thousands in his life, gave the shoes off of his own feet. What have you ever done? You have no place criticising him.
If a man sells his daughter as a servant she is not to go free as menservants do.[Exod 21:7-11]
What is a servant who isn't allowed to go free? A SLAVE!
You may also buy them from among the children of aliens among you, or from their families, whom they begot in your land. These shall become your property: you may keep them as a possession for your children, for them to inherit as property forever. Such you may treat as slaves. [Lev 25:44]
Hebrews could not be slaves 4 life, gentiles could
I agree with gtq838. You criticize us, but I doubt you really know much about us. Why are you so devoted to bashing Judiasm? I'm not even sure what you're trying to prove. And what have you done for someone in need? People complain about the starving children in Africa, but not many people do something about it. And what point are you trying to prove with Exodus 21:20? I think you're miserable, and your life is boring, and that's why the best thing you have to do is try to diss Christians.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. [Ephesians 6:5-8]
K, you're still going around this issue, twisting and contorting as atheists always do. Look, our country allowed slavery not only 200 years ago. And you missed the most important part. The very next verse:
"And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him." Ephesians 6:9. Masters have responsibility to their slaves. Slave/ master= Employee/employer. different culture
bible did not seem to concerned about the suffering of slaves with cruel masters:
Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? If you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have Gods approval. [1 Pet 2:17-20]
Clearly you do not know my God. I think its cute how you only quote the Old Testament. Start quoting from the New Testament with your mindset and then I'll listen.
I cried when I first heard this song. It's so beautiful! We're blessed to live in this country. His fingerprints are everywhere. Thanks so much for your music, Rich!
I love this music too, if you like what God did through Rich, try listening to some of Jason Uptons. I think God is doing awesome things through that music too.
This is, no doubt, the most artistic Christian song ever written. It's message is beautiful, it's composed in a light, floaty rhythm, and when it's over, leaves a large impact on your heart.
AAHHHHHH I've been listening to him forever! I haven't been listening to him Lately :( Yay! Rich's songs always remind me that I am so little, and that someone loves me more than I can even imagine. I would always listen to this when I drove across the country. :) Halleluigha!
I've been listening to him like since I was very little! He will always make me fell better and brighten up my day. Helps me think about what life is really about and who we are!
And over Kansas the whole universe was stilled by the whisper of a prayer....and where the sacred rivers meet beneath the shadow of the Keeper of the Plains...
I love his little tributes to Kansas in his songs. We're definitely priveleged to have had him live here. A true man of God he was...if anyone ever lived close to the way Jesus lived...Rich did. He gave all the glory to God!
Jesus, Son of God, be exalted in me! Do not let me be put to shame, because my hope is in your Word, and in your provision of prescious blood, which cleanses me thoroughly. Yeshua, you are able save to the utmost those who come to God through you, because you always live to intercede for us. Bless you, O God of Jacob!
Thank you for that, though Yeshua has never hindered my prayers, nor the powerful working of His Spirit in my life. Most Messianic Jews that I fellowship with call Him Yeshua too, but again, I thank you for this piece of information. God bless!
Oh I am so sorry--I didn't want it to come across like your prayers weren't working or something!! :) I just found out on Sunday the difference between the 2 names so it just hit me by surprise when I saw someone actually address it on here. I'm not a Jew (our pastor studied under a Rabbi). That's awesome when God's chosen people believe Jesus is the Messiah!! God bless you and keep lifting up His Wonderful Name!! :)
Thank you for this video. Rich Mullins was a true worshipper of Yeshua. MAy the Lord Almighty be blessed continually in my heart, and may I always seek His face in worship.
I live in Taiwan and I can only find one of his albums:"The Best of Rich Mullins" in Christian bookstores here...maybe you can also find that one in your country:)God bless.
I wept when I watched this. I haven't heard Rich's music since I was a little kid when my mom used to play this cassette all the time in the car. Funny how I've haven't thought about these songs in years but I can still sing along with them. I think I'm going to go buy this album tomorrow if I can find it...

I love the dulcimer on this song, but I've been looking for one of his songs that he plays a classic piano song before he starts singing, and for the life of me I just can't remember it....anyone know what I'm talking about?
ramblingcookie 2 years ago
Ramblingcookie, I think you are thinking of Sing Your Praise To The Lord, the song that Amy Grant recorded.
shicks5021 2 years ago
"Sing Your Praise to the Lord" is a lot of dulcimer prior to piano. If you are looking for piano only, then check out "My Deliverer" or "If I Stand"...they are the only "famous" songs that are piano driven at the beginning that I could find.

I have, of course, heard this song before. This is the first time that I HAVE HEARD THIS SONG! I've said it before that this man was some kind of modern age John the Baptist. I only wish now that I listened to him when he was with us. We DO need another like him. His music continues to move and reach me.

I think that's what all of us need to completely do...imagine the world if we did!

I agree 100%. Many people don't understand what he's talking about. This is personal to me because my father used to take care of buffalo in southwest Kansas and he used to take me to feed them. Also if you ever driven during a rain storm while listening to this, it takes on a whole new meaning.
tmwherrell 2 years ago 5
When I saw Rich perform live he had the audience all close their eyes and he simulated a rain storm passing over by utilizing effects made from the instruments on stage. I believe he did this right before playing this song. I am from San Francisco, but I fully understand the meaning of this song. The prairies have some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

BestEvaGal 2 years ago 2
If you study the word of God closely ( Bible). It says that God is a patient God. He gave the Amalekites 700 years to turn from their wicked ways. The problem with non believers is that they're so full of pride they think their views about Gods word are right when they're not rooted in Gods word. There is no greater joy than the joy found in Christ Jesus who died on the cross and rose on the 3rd day. Praise be to Jesus Christ who is the only truth and the way to the life ( John 14:6).
tommyboyredful 2 years ago 4
VernianProcess 2 years ago 4
The mercy of the LORD is great. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. All deserve the punishment of death, for there is not one who is righteous, no, not even one. Who then can be saved? With man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible. God's mercy extends to those who are condmned by man, including Hitler, Stalin, the Amalakites, and every man, woman, child, and infant. (Born and unborn) All will be raised up on the last day to eternal life.

I believe that Yahweh is the creation of a primitive bronze-age society, that was merciless in war.
exodus21v20 2 years ago
The reason for the destruction of the Amalekites was to annihilate sin. God cannot tolerate sin. The New Testament warned that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. A little sin will destroy many. If people came to your village, pillaging and plundering, killing, mutilating, and defiling the ones that you loved, you wouldn't try to defend the village? It's easy to criticize from the outside, but put yourself in the Jew's position. Since you are into scripture, read all of Matt. 25.

Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.' [1 Samuel 15:2-4]
exodus21v20 2 years ago
Rich mullins spent his life helping the poor and weak. All you can do is make up lies about him and for what reason? To self glorify? To spread your political propaganda? You are truely a sad person. You know the crazy radical christians donated over one trillion dollars to starving people last year alone? Why don't you make a pass time of reading the bible vs just googling key words try actually reading the bible or at least that chapter.
gtq838 2 years ago 4
Rich spoke of your god's family values: Notice how the woman & kids can't choose to stay with the husband according to your god: If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for 6 years. But in the 7th year, he shall go free, paying nothing. If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him kids, the woman and her kids shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. [Ex. 21:2-6]
exodus21v20 2 years ago
thats not what that says.
You have no place criticising him.
gtq838 2 years ago 4
If a man sells his daughter as a servant she is not to go free as menservants do.[Exod 21:7-11]
What is a servant who isn't allowed to go free? A SLAVE!
You may also buy them from among the children of aliens among you, or from their families, whom they begot in your land. These shall become your property: you may keep them as a possession for your children, for them to inherit as property forever. Such you may treat as slaves. [Lev 25:44]
Hebrews could not be slaves 4 life, gentiles could
exodus21v20 2 years ago
I agree with gtq838. You criticize us, but I doubt you really know much about us. Why are you so devoted to bashing Judiasm? I'm not even sure what you're trying to prove. And what have you done for someone in need? People complain about the starving children in Africa, but not many people do something about it. And what point are you trying to prove with Exodus 21:20? I think you're miserable, and your life is boring, and that's why the best thing you have to do is try to diss Christians.
FortisRex 2 years ago
Istead, you should think slavery is miserable:
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. [Ephesians 6:5-8]
exodus21v20 2 years ago
K, you're still going around this issue, twisting and contorting as atheists always do. Look, our country allowed slavery not only 200 years ago. And you missed the most important part. The very next verse:
"And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him." Ephesians 6:9. Masters have responsibility to their slaves. Slave/ master= Employee/employer. different culture
FortisRex 2 years ago
bible did not seem to concerned about the suffering of slaves with cruel masters:
Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? If you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have Gods approval. [1 Pet 2:17-20]
Shld have banned slavery
