It was called 3G cause it came with 3G unlike the first iPhone, and "S" stands for "Speed", which gives you the third iPhone: iPhone 3GS (3G + Speed - due to it's new processor). iPhone > iPhone 3G > iPhone 3GS > iPhone 4 > iPhone 4S > iPhone.
