In japan, cellphones can scan IR code, so any cell would be able to scan the code, view the pic, and save it. It's been a long time standard and incorporated into their tech. The whole point is to have a pic that'll last as long as the tombstone.

These QR codes are extremely popular in China/Japan. The technology hasn't taken off as quickly over in the west, so we don't get the idea, but it would be much more popular and acceptable over there.
