My son brought me one back in Oct, and I use it quite a lot. I haven't rooted it yet, and may do that this weekend.

You just need to load a customized ROM to root it. Google for various downloads (Youtube won't allow a link here). You download the ROM, put it on a MicroSD card, and reboot the device, it will enter a process of updating the ROM. Battery life can be improved by disabling some of the programs.
