  • Man, I took a train on this route into NY Penn from Bernardsville, NJ, for more years than I care to admit. I ALWAYS wanted to get a cab ride, but never did. THANKS for this! What a treat.

Further, were we EVER grateful that in '95 (?), NJT hooked into the NEC; before that it was change in Summit, or deal with Hoboken. One of the best things NJT ever did.

  • Great audio !!

Backwoods moonshine music blends well with the 'urban' theme of the northeast...

    ... then dead silence...

    Bravo.

  • Great video and great music. Everyone quit complaining about the music. I'm from this area of the NEC and I don't mind the music.

  • I thought that this site was open to all opinions critical or as long they were non abusive. I hate the music because I am from this area of the NEC and the music you replaced the original with does tend to throw one a bit off as this is not Hillbilly Country at all. As it is, you obviously dont intend to change because of personal whims or whatever so goodbye. There are other sites.

  • @jasandros Oh no, I think I'm crying.

  • Wow. Watching this video, and riding the NJ Transit a dozen or so times brings up some questions that I've always wanted to know. How do you get a cab ride? Why are there only 2 tracks on the route? What happenned to the others?

  • Great vid! how do you get to ride in a cab like that?

  • This is by far the best cab ride video I have ever seen and I indeed like the music. Maybe because im a hillbilly, right? Man, honestly this should be a Youtube award winning video if they gave awards. Ive been thru that tunnel a million times and always wanted a cab view. Also, to be completely honest, what i love the most is getting to see all those switches. Man, for some reason, the more complex the switch the more I love it. Anyway, once again, wow, great video.

    Dr. Ron

  • OK OK you win- I'll give up my wallet if you change the music

  • I don't really know the NEC not being american, but I am fascinated by it. It's very similar to a lot of our railways in England. I found it quite weird to see the train enter the tunnel in the green countryside and suddenly be in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the world! I guess it must pass under a lot of buildings in that tunnel!

  • nice ride.... wow i wish

  • do you have this on DVD? I checked your website.

  • I like the music too ... and the video of course :O)

  • I like the video and the music.

  • Everyone please quit whining about the music. This is one of very few cabride videos from the Northeast Corridor; Who gives a crap what the music is. If you don't like it, mute it. Thanks for your support....

  • Whoops, you were on the right train into Penn station as your viedeo "clearly" shows the train about to go under the Post Office. Nice video, "Still don't care for the music though."

  • Second part was better than the first. NO LOUSY COUNTRY AND WESTERN MUSIC!

Also, you missed your train to Penn Station and took the train to Grand Central instead!

  • Maybe a banjo

  • Nice vid, how did you organize this?

  • Nice vid. I agree with others that it would sound better with the train's sounds but the music is good.

  • @warszawianka

I agree! the actually sounds of the rail would've been better than this hillbilly music

  • cool,i liked the double Decker NJT pass!

  • What's the name of the song used in the video?

  • Could make a scary movie with this.

  • Nice video! Did you get to blow the horn at all?

  • LOVE that FIDDLE

  • Could you re-upload this video without the music and the original audio? If so, that'd be really nice. :)

  • whats the song?

  • Actually, the PATH system uses different tunnels. You can go on Wikipedia or Google and search for the "Uptown Hudson Tubes" or the "Downtown Hudson Tubes." The tunnels featured in this video are the North River Tunnels that are used by Amtrak and NJ Transit. The third rail has been disused for a long time. It was used in the 1920s and 30s before the line was electrified using overhead lines. When Pennsy strung overhead wires, the third rail was shut off, and now remains on at a low voltage.

  • now I've rode the subway

  • Comment removed

  • man, i take this ride almost ever day <_<

  • I have to mute the sound because the music attached to the video is not near as good as the original music was..why did it gat changed. A lot of folks commented favorably regarding the original sound track. This new one is just plain HOKEY!!!!

It would fit better on a train in the south or west but not in NYC.

  • PURELY FANTASTIC!!!! I miss the old music, though...

  • wow cool!!

  • penn station is in the city.

  • penn station is in mahattan

  • @mcrrocks80 Well, technically, there are two Penn Stations: one in midtown Manhattan and one in downtown Newark, NJ. But yes, the one shown in this video would be NY Penn. Newark Penn was probably fifteen minutes prior to the start of this video

  • HEY SEED MUSIC FOR NEW YORK CITY...JUST DON"T ADD UP.

  • Sorry for complaining, but I liked the old music better! Nice vid, though!

  • How did you get a cabride? and awesome video!

  • Great video, did you ride in a cabcar on engine?

  • It this the path train?

  • And i thought being a long haul trucker was cool....Where did I go wrong?

  • We LIRR riders never get to see the entrance into penn from the 8th ave. side, thank you for the view!

  • Neither LIRR nor PATH use this tunnel. This tunnel was built with the third rail, and it pre-dates then Pennsy's 1935 conversion to a/c/ overhead catenary. Once they a.c. went on the d.c. was turned off.

  • Hi !

In the first time of the Video, a great Lokomotion from good old Germany, nice Video.

    Gratulation Thomas

  • Great video :D

  • @kschaffler1 The third rail should be put back so P32ACDMs don't have to use diesel on the North River tunnels and use third rail instead.

  • This is awesome!!! I added this to my favorites!!!

  • Third Rail for the West Side connection and dual power GE Genesis diesels, along with LIRR. PATH uses a completely different tunnel farther south.

  • A very nice video. The music in this is rather soothing. Great job! =D

  • Great Vid!

I now know what Approaching Penn looks like

  • Very nice video, and kudos for keeping the sound and incriminating evidence classified. NEC is a great vid and being I work for a railroad, areciate keeping stuff on the down-low so we can stil appreciate the fine art of railfanning.

  • i always wanted to kno where does the track on right lead from, cause i kno the ones on the left are for lirr trains goin into the yard

  • Tracks on the right are storage tracks for NJT(used to store NH equipment back in the day) and the Empire Connection to the West Side line to Spuyten-Duyvil.

  • also trainriders1031 lirr also uses the 3rd rail

in penn for their trains and dual-modes

  • Actually, the third rail is leftover from when the PRR used 3rd rail DD1 electric locomotives between Penn Station and the Manhattan Transfer station before the entire corridor was electrified.

  • Just Amtrak and NJT. PATH has their own tunnels.

  • Great vid---Actually path has its own tubes--any train that is dualmode uses this--ex-p32ac-dm

  • I have to bring this up just because it a parody. "You know what you just did, you gave Al Quada info on there next target."

If somebody says that, please delete them.

I love the video and it was cool. I never knew that there was a open pit before you reach Penn Station. Cool video dude.

  • PATH doesn't use that tunnel. That third rail is used for Amtrak diesel locomotives. They rarely pass through that tunnel any more. The third rail starts right before you enter the tunnel.

  • Nice vid. I didn't nkow the tunnel had third rail going through most of it. It's not like the LIRR is going to use it

  • @mmanisr22

from what i read about the PRR electrification project, the third rail was for the first series of electric locos that coupled to the trains at Manhattan transfer in New Jersey after the K-4 steamers had decoupled. This was before the high voltage catinary system was installed. After that GG-1's up to todays modern pantograph equipped engines handle the runs and I believe the 3rd rail is no longer used. Path trains do not use Penn Station, they use Herald Sq.

  • No problem great material man!

  • One of the best NEC videos I've seen ... thanks for sharing!

  • I love all the double-slip switches! What operator was it you were riding with. If you can't say I will understanf completely.

  • Do get hold of the TRAINS article! It includes many photos of the various track and train location displays from which the operators work. It looks an impossible task, but somehow it all functions!

  • FANTASTIC! [except for music track] TRAINS magazine just arrived with a feature article on Penn Station and its amazing interlocking plant! Great to see this video, too!

  • Exactly.

  • Remember that most Railroads wont let non-employees in the cab. Let alone after 911. If the engineers voice was on the video he could get in serious trouble.

  • Why in the world do people have to put music under their train videos??? Let it roll...........

  • OK great. Last time I was in Penn Station was 1979. I vaguely remember going through the tunnel.

  • The tunnel you go under is that for the Hudson River?

  • Nice Video!

  • What kind of car were you in?

  • I might have an idea, but im not telling you

  • I've watched this video a few times now and I think I have an idea also.

  • Excuse me But Wats the Nme of that song I really love that song, send it to me on here or message me on my profile thank you, peace, excellent video

  • dude you gotta give me the song name...

  • Pretty isn't it, almost sounds like the group "Art of Noise"

  • yeah i love art of noise and moments in love is my favorit song but what is the name?

  • what is the name of this song?

  • I have a friend works for amtrak and i've been to new york since when i was a kid and i haven't been to new york since 9/11 and 2004.Nice video!

  • I've been through that tunnel more times than i can count

  • Cool video, could pretty much re-qualify NYP from it! You unfortunately got to be careful posting stuff like this. I won't go into details but to the experienced eye and running a few reports it's very easy to find out what train and crew this was especially when you provide the date of 05-15-09 at the beginning. Like I said, great video but some things are best kept in our own archives and shown privately...

  • great video kyle. and im glad you didn't disclose any equipment #/ crew member names..

  • How in the Hec did you get a cab ride?

  • At 1:15, you clearly see a second tunnel entrance... What happened to that tunnel?????

  • Its the southbound track of the NEC/NJT two track tunnel to Penn Station. Its the return track of the train you are watching now. The Penn Station entrance has two tracks.

  • Did you notice that each tunnel only has a single track? That second tunnel is for westbound trains.

  • What ever happened to the second tunnel?

  • Great Job, fun to watch, brings back memories..Thanks....

  • its always funny how there's always a njt train on the right side when your pulling in between the two tunnels

  • Cool.

  • nice. How were you able to get in the cab?

  • was that an Aem-7? otherwise awesome video!

  • Nice! I've gotten a cab ride in an F40 once, but I wasn't allowed to film.

  • I myself rode in an Amtrak F40PH on Amtrak train 312 which ran from Springfield IL chicago IL 6 days a week from 1986 to 1996 and it was awsome going from Springfield IL to Lincoln Illinois back in 1994 it was awsome

  • cool

  • kyle man this is the best one yet, i had the chance once when i worked for amtrak to take it out of penn going to boston, its a nice ride seeing everything.

  • Well Kyle, i have to say, i bet that had to be the most amazing thing you have ever been able to see. Now only if CSX would let me inside one of those SD70MAc's.. But that'd be the day, when CSX died..

  • Best video you have, by far!

  • Pretty damn cool!

  • best vid i've seen from you. nice

  • god i love cabvies on electric lines :X

  • Perfect! Was there a seat on the left side for you?

  • WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CAB STAYS IN THE CAB

  • OMG u are going to get this engineer fired THOSE WERE MULTILEVELS ALL I HAVE TO DO IS LOOK IN MY TIMETABLE LOOK AT THE VIDEO AND DETERMINE WHAT TIME U GOT AT NY bosses arent dumb!

  • sweet!

  • nice amazing u were able to do this after things like chatsworth.

  • awesome lucky person what train was this

  • Im suprised that your still stupid enough to ask that.

  • this video is the best cabride video ever

  • why did you put audioswap on!? I preferred the sounds of the train but oh well

  • Love The NEC. Thanks for posting this.

  • Excellent video.

  • Wow! That's lucky! Awesome video!

  • Where was the tunnel at 1:13? awesome video!

  • in weehawken jew jersey

  • I don't live in America, but wow. I like it how one minute, the train is in green fields (or something), and after going through a tunnel, your near a major station in one of the worlds biggest cities.

  • were you in the cab?

  • This is an amazing video!! I've always wanted to see the tunnel and the interlockings from the front of the train!!XD BTW, I think it's actually less annoying to listen to an E-bell for about two minutes than listening to a real bell clicking for said amount of time.

  • Nice job Kyle, this is kickass

  • Great video

  • Wow. That's all I can say. Wow. The MBTA would never let me do this on the commuter rail. This is truly unique. Awesome job. Awesome.

  • Well let me start by saying that this is by far your best video ever made, and I don't say that very easily. I must warn you though that although the engineer may have given you permission to upload it, I've heard that NJT has actual employees that sit in an office and browse for cabride videos on Youtube and search for Facebook and Myspace profiles of other employees. Just be careful. 5 stars and favorited.

  • I must say this was the best video ever!!!!...awesome footage!!!

  • hmm, voices? not such a good idea, but great video

  • Thanks, Jimmy!

Well... I was given permission to both shoot the video and to upload it to the internet for public viewing... but I still will not say what railroad, train number or any other information... even though the crew was permitted to do this. Thanks again!

  • and yes i know they dont own AEM7's lol

  • nice video, 5 star, what kind of enigne, AEM7?

  • ok so if this is an NJ Transit train its has to be an ALP44 because of the lights on the top and that awsome bell, i really like this video bro!
