  • Also 6 inches of pine bows make a good bed. Well insulated, she could have managed that for both of you.

  • Never saw the fire going. Assuming you both went to bed cold. I don't blame her for going to bed early. Should have just brought a lighter with you bro. Canadian here that goes out in the woods in the middle of winter. It makes for better video if you all make it out. Cheers

  • So, I built my cave just like yours. . .It is ready. . .send Nicole over ; ) I also have one throw for Nicole and me

  • hold on to that girl. she's the real deal to go out

dont be hard on yourself man. at least your doing it

  • hold on to that girl. she's the real deal to go out

  • Thanks for sharing this, including your mistakes.

  • dont beat yourself up over nothing you learn from your mistakes

  • your girlfriend has more balls than most of the guys watching this vid... yeah I'd marry her too, good luck bro...

  • Cool video - I admire your honesty too! Much appreciated.

    Dave.

  • well done video. i really appreciate your critical assessment of the trip. We all know how easy it is to look at the things we do right and ignore our mistakes. thumbs up.

  • good job dude, shows people that's its not as easy as they think, REAL informative video. Congrats. I'm in Quebec and it gets to -30 often in winter and I'm planning to experience it this winter with my 2 kids. By the way is the girl still your friend? LOL

  • You did well YOU have BIGER balls THEN I. GOOD JOB

  • We really appreciate the honesty in this video. I would MARRY that girl in a heartbeat! I like it that you accompanied her to find comfort after she really tried to accompany you under those conditions. She's a real trooper and a true companion.

  • @gort451 FYI you can train any woman to do that, ask your mom.

  • awesome. thats a TRUE video. honesty appreciated, now i know.

  • I'm deaf!!!!!!!!

  • Experience is a nasty instructor, it tests you before it teaches you.

  • when i saw the melted ash pile, i had to point and laugh. I remember what mine looked like. its all part of the learning experience.

gotta have a heat source in that kinda shelter, and a thick wool blanket helps. eskimo's used to use whale fat grease lamps, venting is important, smaller fire by the door, with openings above it usually works well

  • cool vid...nice to see you admitting your mistakes, reminds ppl like me that things don't always go to plan no matter how much prep work has been done.

  • Very credible. I learned a lot from your no bull report. Looking forward to your next vid.

  • Yo dude, maybe you should let Nicole make camp next time. LOL.

  • It's tough to admit mistakes as humans. Especially to a whole audience. You deserve props for your honesty.

Im subscribing based just off this video!

  • brings back bad memories spent all last october in a tent with no fly above the ohio river freazing wile everyone else was warm in the house next to me but i wasn't aloud in sucked but owell

  • I did not learn much like how you build your shelter...you showed it in the dark...not goodfor me....sigh

  • Props to you for even finding a girl willing to try camping like that.

  • she probably didn't want to stay in there, cause you pissed right next to her, manners bro manners....

  • lol nicole.....u done good there pulling that fuckin psycho..........lol.......and do as your ordered...........hehehe

  • HAHA blame it on nicole.

    cool vid man

    thanks

  • Man I sooooooo appreciate the fact that you are sharing your mistakes along with your wisdom!!! TYTYTY!

  • I ttry to get my friends to do this stuff, but they all whine. :(

  • Shit man, I'd totally be for it. I myself am getting some supplies ready and such. But I'll end up going by myself since my friends would just piss and moan about everything that would need to be done.

  • yeah im gonna do the same..im god maybe video tape it and post it on youtube. I think it would b cool

  • here in Philadelphia PA it gets freezing could maybe around late December early Jan.

  • Bear will starts talking about his wife and kids when ever his reputation gets muddy from his cheating.

  • Great video. I appreciate your candid remarks at the end. You motivate me!

  • agreed the honesty at the end is what people can learn from. the rookie mistakes he made is giving all the newbies valuable experience.

  • Moe, the US is a very large country. Nearly every climate on earth is found within the United States depending on where you are. I live in the state of Wisconsin, and roads can be icy from September to April. Obviously, Florida, Texas, and the rest of the American southwest would see much less snow or ice, and in some places none at all. I would plan my trip to travel the northern US in Summer and the southern US in Winter.

  • Some places as early as late August- late April.

  • survival man = the best

man vs wiled = gay is all he does is run for the whole video surviver man has a good show

  • and survivorman is by himself. Bear Grylls has a camera crew and I've read on the internet that he gets energy bars, though obviously I can't say that's true or not. Survivorman is way better. And he can play a mean harmonica, so Bear can't really touch him.

  • also survivorman is real.

bear gryll, man vs wild, is about as real as the other british series, 007.

  • I'll tell you the biggest lesson a person can learn from videos like this and programs like man versus wild and survivorman where people go into the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on their back and s pocket knife. That lesson is...Don't do it. lol If you're going into the wilds bring a nice , warm sleeping bag , some food, water , and a tent. lol God bless you man for sharing your experiences. Thank you.

  • Really like your videos, but blow your nose every once in a while.

  • no doubt

  • Pretty hardcore man

  • I think that your mistakes and failures are the most important things you could post one the web... thank you for being modest and posting these videos... I learn more from people's mistakes than from their success. So, please keep doing what you do and keep up the real aspect of survival. Not everyone out in the wilderness has a camera crew and air/ground support...lol. you kick ass

  • You forgot the number one most important rule in wilderness camping...

    Leave the chick at home...

  • Yeah have slept cold a couple of times myself but ya learn all ya life and I won't make those mistakes again

  • Wow. Thanks for the mistakes video. I agree with the viewers here when they say that it's important for rookies to see mistakes as well. Especially from a trained person like yourself. Great job and keep making those videos!

  • Good on ya for admitting your mistakes. Reflections on how things could have gone better is an important part of the outing. I'm still trying to get my Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to learn that. Still good info throughout. Thanks.

  • posting screw ups is just as important for rookies on youtube to learn from. it goes to show that any thing can go wrong and a simple mistake can have critical consequences.

  • sometimes it does not work as we want and you proved that. You see it, you get it. That is why we do not stop learning until we die (bruce lee).

  • This is important info you are sharing.

  • What kind of sweater were you wearing at the beginning???? :o)

  • Just a fleece camo top

  • Brand? I am just curious, because I want to check it out - it looks warmer than two rats fucking in a wool sock! :o)

  • Never heard that one before.

I got it from Old Navy for like $12.

Brands don't help though. Proper materials do.

I make a lot of my own stuff. Then it's customized to my system.

  • @mysticalwoodsman You might waana ask your mother about the two rats and the wool sock : ]

  • Keep up the 5 star work! You are posting some good videos. Lessons are learned from seeing the right way and from mistakes too. The worst night I ever spent in the woods was in late Spring.I did not plan it and decided to tough it out. NG. The best time I had was in old canvas ARMY SHELTER HALVES. Weather below zero F. at night, but I had a good site, great fire, and got out of day clothes. -21(BEFORE windchill) with down bag and light nylon tent was my coldest comfortable outing. It was great.

  • that was really cool i was thinking about going out and trying it in my tent its feb... its cold and lots of snow but im sick right now so im doing it tomamroo night

  • Goo for you!

    I hope you have a 4-season tent.

I single wall is too cold. Debri-shelter provides more insulation and protection.

  • haha...good shelter!! but i had a big laugh on the fire situation

  • Hi Joe, I feel that the debris shelter is best in a conical shape or even wigwam, where the fire can be inside. It is good you are honest. To be very honest your girl may have failed at life & it seemed to be melting. A semi enclosed lean to with raised bed a too much wood is better.

  • Ya. I like my fire too. And the last two times out, I slept without one.

It has got me thinking the same as you. I'm probably gonna do that the next time out.

I'll get it on video and let you know what I found.

  • Heat some rocks and bury them under your sleeping bag, or simply brush away the charcoals where the fire was and sleep on top of that. :o) That is what Bradford Angier suggests anyways...

  • When you get the chance, you should make a video, showing us how to build the snow hut, and how to make one with just pine branches in the spring and summer. Great video.

  • mate you are doing a good job with these vids your right we are all still learning no matter how much you know ,keep the vids coming " a man that makes no mistakes usually makes nothing " a quote from an instructor friend of mine, and its true so dude keep making mistakes and make sure you video them because thats the way we learn. 5 stars.

  • Thanks for letting us see your learning experiences (the good and the bad)

  • Your femal friend doesn't look quiet enthusiastic about the whole winter survival thing.

  • she's ok with it. She went out like 3-4 times in the summer. She's a trooper!

  • If I had to pick anyone to bring on a expedition, it be you joe!

  • Thanks buddy!

  • i like how you keep it real....alot of people just dont know what it is out there and you do and are honest with it. thats the key to survival itself.....being honest with your self about your situation and dealing with it appropriately. besides you must be doing something right to get a cutie like that to go out into it with you like that...lol.

  • Thanks, I do appreciate it. Honest is the only way to be, especially with oneself.

  • Most people are conditioned to make fun of those who makes mistakes, and those who are honest continually to themselves and are humble, are the ones people sadly look down upon because they are usually always the first to admit it. I would bet though, that in a survival situation, they would more than likely follow them, because only those who are truly honest with themselves and express that while witnessing their mistakes to others, are the ones who truly lead.
