Our schnauzer died last weekend, he was almost 15 years old so I can't complain about his age but we're all having a hard time accepting he's gone for good.
I love my mini Schnauzer. She's so smart and human like~ she's also fiercely loyal and wont take just to anyone which can be a bit troublesome when we need to drop her off at the groomers/vets. For the size, the mini is incredibly hardly and not at all delicate. This really is a fantastic breed <3
She is not a puppy mill dog. Her parents are AKC registered and so is she. Why would you even think she was from a puppy mill? I wouldn't buy a puppy mill dog. If you have read about Schnauzers, there is a skin problem common with them.
I adore my schnauzer, but her skin problems are driving us all nuts. She also has a heart murmur and arthur in one knee and she is only 7. While most small dogs are dumb, they are unbelievably smart, and she seems to understand everything I say. She actually pays attention. Because she has been socialized, she is wonderful with other dogs and humans. Wonderful dogs!
@SejayGriff those problems may not be from the breed it self but from over breeding.....this is what happens with puppy mills....they breed with whom ever...and pass down all sorts of diseases.....then someone buys one...and breeds it...then those puppy have the trait as-well and so on....Schnauzers are so affectionate.....we had a mini...and omg my aunt would always say..this dog is the wrong body he should be a human! lol...so smart and loving!! aww i miss him =(
@jessicavm My Miniature Schnauzer came from a puppy mill. Surprisingly, he has no medical or social problems. His name is Sparky, and he is the perfect companion. Because of his tough past, I kind of feel like my family rescued him. Anyway, Miniature Schnauzer will always be the world's best breed IMO.
I'm falling in love with this breed. And I think I might be getting a puppy soon! At this stage I'm pretty sure it will be the mini schnauzer. I just hope they will get along with my other dogs....
@FarAwayLandGirl if the other dogs are there first and its a puppy schauzer, then it'll probably work out.. If it were the other way around however.... good luck lol
I got a mini 2 weeks ago. I love it. True they are very active and jumpy but it's fun. He's already learning to pay attention and stop what he's doing when I call for him =) He's 2 months old so he has plenty left to learn. He's great for our little apartment
Hello. I have a question. I am a swimming pool man and I currently have a customer who has Miniature Schnauzer and Standard Schnauzer. While miniature schnauzer is very friendly and approaches me well, standard schnauzer is afraid of me and will run away even when I am talking to the owner friendly. Are Standard Schnauzer full of fear or am I just looking at a unusual type of Standard Schnauzer? I would appreciate it if anyone who has good knowledge on schnauzers can explain. Thank you.
@jpswimmingpool Hi, jpswimmingpool. That seems really unusual for a standard schnauzer. Usually, they are not fearful, in fact, that are great protectors, and will bark and get in the face of strangers that are at the door, lol. I have had a standard schnauzer for 15 years, and any time we have visitors, it is almost embarrassing the lengths she will go through to "protect" us when we have guests over. One of my friends also has a schnauzer, and has had the same experience.I hope this helps.
@intohair2 Aah ok. Because yeah, standard schnauzer barks in front of the backyard gate. Once I open the gate and come in, it barks but runs away. I was able to understand it until I met the owner of the schnauzer and miniature schnauzer. Even when I'm talking to the owner friendly and also petting miniature schnauzer, standard one still barks at me as if I'm some stranger. But again, there's always unusual type for every breed because I also have a customer with fierceful Golden Retreiver.
omg... Fuck you america.. To cutt their ears and tail just to make them look better (which they dont) is just wrong.. You have a lot to learn from Europe.
@GodofEpicness My mom has a pit bull. She left his ears, and tail alone. We've come to understand that their may be a rationale for bobbing the tail, as he has a number of issues with his. And their are exeptions for tail bobbing in the EU. Europeans of many nationalities seem to be quick to jump on america for many things. But if the treatment of animals is an issue of yours, the united states should be the least of your worries. Some places in asia; dogs are farmed, slaughtered, and eaten!
Yes, the reason for this is the breeding of them for so long with cropped tails, they develop a weakness, so unless breeders breed them for stronger tails, docking them usually avoids un-necessary health concerns in the way of tail-breakage etc.
But ear cropping is compltely irrational in the modern age, where dog fighting is not permitted.
@Eleanna4fun - not likely. These little guys are really active and love to be around family and kids. They are constantly seeking attention and love running around and exercising. They are really smart and can be trained to do a whole number of things. They do tend to do a lot of mouthing when they are little, but they are not biting as much as teething. That is why it is so important to stop petting them when they start mouthing. They learn really quickly that teeth to skin is not okay.
mini schnauzers are so dump omg, i cant bear any of them. noisy and stupid like nothing in the world
but as an owner of two giant ones, i can say i'm more then happy. they are so amazingly smart, plus they think they are humans oO that makes them so perfect (with good treating and a huge backyard i have, they aint missing place to spent their energy)
Digby is my mini Schnauzer. A Rescue boy, can you imagine someone throwing him away?! Got him when he was 2 and he is now 5. He is my special boy!!! I did learn is does NOT back down when it comes to varmits!!!, especially possums who come in HIS back yard!
I have a standard schnauzer. Her ears are not cropped. They're beautiful ears and add much to their expressiveness. Ears cropped are truly ugly and detract from the beauty of the schnauzer. Many countries as well as a few states now ban the procedure. Cropping is a holdover from the days when the dog's health and happiness were never considered. The AKC needs to step out of the dark ages and educate the many that only do what they are 'told' to. Kinda like some conservatives I know.
When I was on holiday I visited my dad's friend's house and they had three mini Schnauzers. They were so cute I just sat petting them the whole time, and later I was in the lounge and one of them went to sleep on me :D
Best day ever lol... I would love to own a Schnauzer.
I've a Giant and I love her. I'm not as fond of the mini (but that's mostly because I prefer large dogs).
My girl is a wonderful guard dog, but she's very sweet.
She's nine now and still in very good health. She's only ever had minor health issues.
I'd recommend a giant, but only to someone who has time, energy, patience, a place for them to run, has experience owning dogs, and is very good with dogs. Giants will be the alpha if you aren't which can make them more aggressive to strangers.
@MANCAT4 My parents have a giant without cropped ears. After each triming, the dog for a few weeks shakes a lot and big ears cause wounds on the neck, which do not heal easily and can last up to a month (three trimings a year so dog might end up with this problem for three months per year). My mini has similar problem, but since ears are smaller, wounds are very little. So yes, cropping of ears is not very nice, but they can prevent some problems.
@Parazitas999 There is a way to prevent these wounds. Leaving coat on ears helps the problem.
I've lived with many schnauzers, miniature and giant, completely all my life. My family owns a miniature schnauzer kennel, so I've faced all kinds of stuff, including beaten ears from shaking. Experience shows that this problem is with dogs who's parents have clipped ears, and so do they. Because those ears are thicker, so they stand up. The next generation has softer, hanging ears and less beating.
@sinjynsmith so the solution is to breed several generations :) The problem on ears is not that big. But with those ears he beats his neck and wounds open on neck belove the ears.
For me personally cropped and non cropped ears look fine, but the tail on giant really looks kind of weird, but mainly it's very thick and long and dog is energetic, I can only imagine what would happen in home with giant with full tail - lots of damage, maybe not. Any experience with this?
@Parazitas999 Oh yeah, you have to watch out of that tail when they are young and very active. I wouldn't like to say that bruises on your legs are unavoidable, but they can hit pretty hard with that whip like tail when not expected. So they should be controlled when with small children.
Personally, I now like only natural ears and tails. So the crazy tail is what you should be reckoned with, but with time you get used to it. And there's nothing weird about natural tails, they look wonderful!
@sinjynsmith beauty is in the eyes of beholder ;) I personally don't see very huge problem of trimming tails for small puppies who practically don't fell it and especially if it avoids certain problems or difficulties with dog in the future. I agree on ears though, they are cropped later and it is painful and long period for dog to recover - it shouldn't be done if possible. And I read somewhere that standards were breed to hunt rats and cropping was done so that rats did not bite ears and tail
@Parazitas999 Yes, schnauzers were bred to hunt rats in stables. Of course, not without a reason ears and tails were cut in the past in all those breeds out there. I do agree with cutting if it's needed for work or hunting, but certainly not if dog is meant for family as companion or shows.
It actually surprises me how often it is practiced worldwide, especially being legal in USA. Glad that it's illegal here in Europe in several countries. Eventually it'll spread all over the world. You'll see!
I LOVE my schnauzer but I would not recommend anyone get them. They are so prone to so many different kinds of sicknesses and its heart breaking to watch them go through it. My mini now is so sick and he is only 11. He has had bladder stones and pancreatis, and has been on special (expensive) dog food for a couple years now. He has some weird problem with white blood cells too. Apparently this is pretty common. I think when he dies we will just adopt a mutt.
@WoodenSwordL I personally adore schnauzers and I have had 3 in my lifetime. One past away this last december but he lived to be 16. The other two are in great health. I would recomend them to everyone
1:22 mines look almost just like that except the ears are cropped. He's a lil terrior, he LOVES PPL(like if someone was tryna brake in, we would be goners lol) But he HATES other dogs, im suprised he gets along with my chihuahua, and he still trys to dominate the chihuahua sometimes but we pop that BUT ! lol
My dog is 3/4 mini schnauzer and 1/4 yorkie. she has never been sick and is the toughest thing around. her parents weren't pedigree or whatever but she is perfect in every way.
I also have had mini's and I find them to be really stubborn whereas giants IMO are not. In my experience, schnauzers hate water no matter the breed. I miss my mini loved playing hide and seek. My gf hates that they have drippy beards haha
GIANTS FTW!!! My giant Maxie was the best friend a girl could ask for growing up. He is almost 12 years old. Giants are incredibly intelligent and I trained him by myself when I was 9 paw, sit, stay, come, roll over. He is so loving too.
He is very well behaved and just loving and caring. If you're looking for a running buddy or tug of war opponent get a giant! But they are a handful and territorial so know what you are getting yourself into.
They, at least the minis, have sensitive stomachs, so you have to be careful with what you feed them. This also means keeping the living area clean, as dogs will eat just about anything they can get their mouths on.
I can't believe I don't see more around, they have to be the best breed. My last guy lived to be 17 and I can't wait for my next. Life isn't the same unless shared with a schnauzer.
my miniature schnauzers have always been so great. my most recent one was my childhood dog, so sweet, such gentle a temperament and human-like eyes like the spinone and great pyrenees. he got diabetes though and that took him :(
This is very sad when one third of American Schnauzers are from this "pure bred puppy mill". It is not surprising that they are suffering from avoidable inbred diseases. Go to Ms Hammarstrom's website Skansen Kennel. Look at the pedigrees, where are the titles? their health testing results? Google giant schnauzer rescue, read the article "... breeder might be a puppy mill if..". Also look through Health database link. Please do your research and do not enable breeders like this.
Only in the right hands. They are too much dog for the average family. I seriously doubt that you have any real experience with either breed. You should do like your name and stick to kitty cats.
You don't know much. You can't just say "Schnauzers" and lump them together like they all have the same temperament and personality. Giants and Standards are more dog than most people can handle. Their activity level and workman like temperament is more than most families can handle. They are great dogs for the right people.
@bank80 So true. Even a Standard will weigh in at around 40lbs of solid muscle and bone. Anyone not ready for a highly intelligent breed with a significant amount of energy should choose another breed or pick up a mutt from the local pound.
Sylvia Hammarstrom is the biggest schnauzer puppy mill in the nation. Her dogs are fraught with health concerns (seizures, bone cancer, blindness) but she keeps breeding these same dogs. She isn't even affiliated with her breeds national clubs. You want a schnauzer, find a breeder that does ONE well-planned and well-intentioned litter a year. This lady does HUNDREDS of litters a year, and there is only one reason for that: puppy mill profit.
i Agree with that !!! i live in iceland in here it's band to do somthing like cutting their ears or shortning their tale and i think its realy cruel (but thats just my opinion ;)
In Germany cropping and docking is also prohibited, which is good!
I have to say this video is not good. at first - standart and miniture Schnauzers are totally other breeds than the GS and have nothing to do with it.
The next point is this heavy chain on the GS's neck. These things are no toys and should only be used be ppl who know what they do! They can be really dangerous for dogs and humans!
Remember: A GS thinks of everything you do to it - and it will strike back!
I dont mean to be rude, I have to think the lady knows a little bit more about the breed than you Slyvia is one of the top breeders world wide she has been working with this breed for years and would never do anything that would make these dogs uncomfortable or put them in any kind of danger.
they don't even get FEELING in their tales until a certain age anyway so if you cut their tales, it doesn't hurt them when they are puppies. They don't even feel it. But cropping the ears I don't agree with...I think they look cute with floppy ears. :D
fruitikay. yepp i know they dont :3 my dog was born with a broken (or somthing tail)and thay had to cut it off and that hasent bother her at all ^^ all im saying is why not let them have there natural looks :P and yes i also thinks its cruel croping there ears :3 and as i said its just my opinion ;)
I guess they just felt that it was time for your pet to leave. You just need to remember that your beloved pet will stay in your heart.I know how it feels...
I love my mini schnauz, Ally. She'll be 5 yrs old 8/15 & she means so much to us! She's a great dog- very smart, quick to learn, entertaining, and loving (to us and other adult people, not very fond of small children but that's our fault- we didn't introduce her to children at all when she was young..) She is curious though and tends to get into trouble if we don't monitor her some.. She tends to obey my husband better than me but only because I lack on the whole "pack leader" role! We LOVE her
I've got a standard and let me tell you this is not a very good family dog.
Our dog only obeys one person and thinks all others are below them in rank. However they are excellent guard dogs that will protect you if trained right.
Be very careful when buying a Schnauzer, they'll need a lot of stimuli and if they can't get that it will reflect in a depressed or sad dog that mostly just lie around.
If you are an experienced dog owner this is a good choice for you. If not don't get this dog
i disagree with parts of your first sentence.i HAD (R.I.P.W.H.M.B) a standard pure bread schnauzer named Max. he was a great family dog but did favor family members a little over others but was a great guard dog. anyone near our front gate would get barked at. he was the man of the house. was my Lab/Chow/golden retriever mix's best friend.he loved to run though.we have a huge yard and he always would get out somehow. we always found him until the one time.he didnt come back.i know he was stolen.
I had a supposed miniature, but he was definitely the size of a standard. Best dog I've ever owned. He was easily trainable, awesome guard dog and very loyal. Unfortunately he got through the electric fence and we found his body on the rail road tracks a few days later. It tore me to pieces.
Sorry about your dog, kurtw1991, that would be horrible. I also had a "miniature" that was 30 pounds. The avg. is SUPPOSED to be 15#-20#, so Trudy was huge for the breed. I now have a small mini at 15#. They mentioned eye problems. Mattie had cloudy eyes, thought they were cataracts. Actually it's diabetes. A few days of insulin cleared that up. Along with peeing in her sleep. Ugh.
that's true! i got my own and his name is koko....he is always with me once i got sick with a terrible flu and he was by my side and was licking my hand and couple of times my boyfriend had to carry him outside so he can go to the bathroom and as soon as he got inside the house he was on my bed with me and didn't want to leave my side
Does anybody have a standard schnauzer? How good they are as guardian dogs? or at least as watchdog? Obviously the giant is better for guardian, but it is too big for me. I wonder if the standard does well.
not good guard dog.. but hell yea... amazing watch dogs. they are always on their heels and have keen hearing senses. a small tick-tack around the fences and they are just right there barking until you go shush them.
We have 2 mini's at the high end of the mini size range..both between 16-18lbs. If you are looking for a physical presence might attack dog, no. If you are looking for a vocal and attentive guard "alarm" dog, you can't do better than a schnauzer, Standard or Mini.
i had a shnauzer! Max died at age 18, my parents had him 5 years before me. I miss him, but ANYWAY, with Max, he barked when someone came to my door, and occasionally, and ONLY when provoked, he would nip. He was very attached to us, so maybe thats why.
i have a mini schnauzer he is so cute! i love him. he's big for a mini but really cute. he is smart, but also barks a lot. he loves swimming in the lake. he is GREAT with kids.
well think about the dog then omboth cuz i bet if you asked them whether they think their ears look better cut off and see what they bark (if they cd speak :) )
zarakitten: We get ours that way because docking and cropping are often done before puppies are at a sellable age, and if bred to be up to show standard, it's done because that's the acceptable ring appearance. So before calling us "idiots", realize most of us don't "crop their poor ears" ourselves. And I personally don't have a problem with docking, it's done with plenty of breeds.
I'm the owner of a black and silver miniature schnauzer, and she's a real sweetheart. As per docking and cropping... her tail was docked when we got her, but her ears remain natural and floppy- I like them better that way!
Tail docking. Having bred one litter I was fascinated as to how the puppies from day one unable to see or hear would crawl to their mother using their sense of smell, their little undocked tails waggling.
Thankfully I live in a country where docking ad cropping is illegal. Namely; Germany from where the breed originates.
I thing the cropped ears are unnecessary, they look adorable with floppy ears...just like mine~~his tail is docked but its still so cute to see him happy and his tail bobbing back and forth!!

Harrietta8888 1 year ago
@MANCAT4 My parents have a giant without cropped ears. After each triming, the dog for a few weeks shakes a lot and big ears cause wounds on the neck, which do not heal easily and can last up to a month (three trimings a year so dog might end up with this problem for three months per year). My mini has similar problem, but since ears are smaller, wounds are very little. So yes, cropping of ears is not very nice, but they can prevent some problems.
Parazitas999 1 year ago
@Parazitas999 There is a way to prevent these wounds. Leaving coat on ears helps the problem.
I've lived with many schnauzers, miniature and giant, completely all my life. My family owns a miniature schnauzer kennel, so I've faced all kinds of stuff, including beaten ears from shaking. Experience shows that this problem is with dogs who's parents have clipped ears, and so do they. Because those ears are thicker, so they stand up. The next generation has softer, hanging ears and less beating.
sinjynsmith 1 year ago
@sinjynsmith so the solution is to breed several generations :) The problem on ears is not that big. But with those ears he beats his neck and wounds open on neck belove the ears.
For me personally cropped and non cropped ears look fine, but the tail on giant really looks kind of weird, but mainly it's very thick and long and dog is energetic, I can only imagine what would happen in home with giant with full tail - lots of damage, maybe not. Any experience with this?
Parazitas999 1 year ago
@Parazitas999 Oh yeah, you have to watch out of that tail when they are young and very active. I wouldn't like to say that bruises on your legs are unavoidable, but they can hit pretty hard with that whip like tail when not expected. So they should be controlled when with small children.
Personally, I now like only natural ears and tails. So the crazy tail is what you should be reckoned with, but with time you get used to it. And there's nothing weird about natural tails, they look wonderful!
sinjynsmith 1 year ago
@sinjynsmith beauty is in the eyes of beholder ;) I personally don't see very huge problem of trimming tails for small puppies who practically don't fell it and especially if it avoids certain problems or difficulties with dog in the future. I agree on ears though, they are cropped later and it is painful and long period for dog to recover - it shouldn't be done if possible. And I read somewhere that standards were breed to hunt rats and cropping was done so that rats did not bite ears and tail
Parazitas999 1 year ago

I also have had mini's and I find them to be really stubborn whereas giants IMO are not. In my experience, schnauzers hate water no matter the breed. I miss my mini loved playing hide and seek. My gf hates that they have drippy beards haha
evetheduke 1 year ago
GIANTS FTW!!! My giant Maxie was the best friend a girl could ask for growing up. He is almost 12 years old. Giants are incredibly intelligent and I trained him by myself when I was 9 paw, sit, stay, come, roll over. He is so loving too.
He is very well behaved and just loving and caring. If you're looking for a running buddy or tug of war opponent get a giant! But they are a handful and territorial so know what you are getting yourself into.

fritzer113 2 years ago
They, at least the minis, have sensitive stomachs, so you have to be careful with what you feed them. This also means keeping the living area clean, as dogs will eat just about anything they can get their mouths on.

TheSquee123 2 years ago
Only in the right hands. They are too much dog for the average family. I seriously doubt that you have any real experience with either breed. You should do like your name and stick to kitty cats.
bank80 2 years ago
You don't know much. You can't just say "Schnauzers" and lump them together like they all have the same temperament and personality. Giants and Standards are more dog than most people can handle. Their activity level and workman like temperament is more than most families can handle. They are great dogs for the right people.
bank80 2 years ago
@bank80 So true. Even a Standard will weigh in at around 40lbs of solid muscle and bone. Anyone not ready for a highly intelligent breed with a significant amount of energy should choose another breed or pick up a mutt from the local pound.
TsugaC 1 year ago
Sylvia Hammarstrom is the biggest schnauzer puppy mill in the nation. Her dogs are fraught with health concerns (seizures, bone cancer, blindness) but she keeps breeding these same dogs. She isn't even affiliated with her breeds national clubs. You want a schnauzer, find a breeder that does ONE well-planned and well-intentioned litter a year. This lady does HUNDREDS of litters a year, and there is only one reason for that: puppy mill profit.

Hlinhp 2 years ago
In Germany cropping and docking is also prohibited, which is good!
I have to say this video is not good. at first - standart and miniture Schnauzers are totally other breeds than the GS and have nothing to do with it.
The next point is this heavy chain on the GS's neck. These things are no toys and should only be used be ppl who know what they do! They can be really dangerous for dogs and humans!
Remember: A GS thinks of everything you do to it - and it will strike back!
vampyresBaby 2 years ago
I dont mean to be rude, I have to think the lady knows a little bit more about the breed than you Slyvia is one of the top breeders world wide she has been working with this breed for years and would never do anything that would make these dogs uncomfortable or put them in any kind of danger.
jackieb59 2 years ago
they don't even get FEELING in their tales until a certain age anyway so if you cut their tales, it doesn't hurt them when they are puppies. They don't even feel it. But cropping the ears I don't agree with...I think they look cute with floppy ears. :D

If not don't get this dog
jonny4911 2 years ago
i disagree with parts of your first sentence.i HAD (R.I.P.W.H.M.B) a standard pure bread schnauzer named Max. he was a great family dog but did favor family members a little over others but was a great guard dog. anyone near our front gate would get barked at. he was the man of the house. was my Lab/Chow/golden retriever mix's best friend.he loved to run though.we have a huge yard and he always would get out somehow. we always found him until the one time.he didnt come back.i know he was stolen.

Ugh.

We have 2 mini's at the high end of the mini size range..both between 16-18lbs. If you are looking for a physical presence might attack dog, no. If you are looking for a vocal and attentive guard "alarm" dog, you can't do better than a schnauzer, Standard or Mini.
sdiver68 2 years ago
i had a shnauzer! Max died at age 18, my parents had him 5 years before me. I miss him, but ANYWAY, with Max, he barked when someone came to my door, and occasionally, and ONLY when provoked, he would nip. He was very attached to us, so maybe thats why.

why do you idiots have to crop their poor ears prevents them from expressing natural behaviour and at least dockings useful
zarakitten99 2 years ago
zarakitten: We get ours that way because docking and cropping are often done before puppies are at a sellable age, and if bred to be up to show standard, it's done because that's the acceptable ring appearance. So before calling us "idiots", realize most of us don't "crop their poor ears" ourselves. And I personally don't have a problem with docking, it's done with plenty of breeds.
