For your information, the republican hunger strike was the second attempt, and was led by B.Sands, who called off the first attempt. He HAD no choice but to start the second and when Maggie wouldn't budge, Sinn Fein/IRSP used the families to end the hunger strike, so as not to loose face. NO family would have been allowed to do this unless SF agreed.
