Interesting, despite this piece was not made for ballet. Also, in this performance the the sonata was cut about 6 variations of the central musical theme, but however I liked so much such a good interpretation. nIce party, definetely.

not being rude... just new to this whole baroque thing. but does this merit hard work and style? I could do this just prancing and gliding in my living room, I love dance, but I am no professional. Do people seriously go to Baroque dance classes?
@saffieyz Yes. In the baroque period, there were entire handbooks written on the subject, one being the Beauchamp Feuillet, which contains instructions for over 300 dances. Many of the steps and positions found in Baroque dance are preserved in ballet, which came after. Modern baroque dances are partly reconstructions, as many of the notations in old handbooks are not clear, and not all modern baroque dancers agree on their meaning.
La Follia is a very famous theme of Baroque Era, also considered by Corelli in his Op. 5 (violin and b.c.). This one is the Vivaldi's version, for two violins and b.c.
@ProphetLuong This is hardly the culture of our forefathers. MOST of our forefathers lived far below the sphere of the priviliged, very small minority that enjoyed this culture. A few of our forefathers might have been exposed to this culture as servants to the rich who enjoyed it.
Vivaldi was much in the style of Elegance and Agility. I am fond of his way of composition that favored the elegance and agility within dance. Thank you.
I thought the La Folia melody is of scandinavian origin, and it has been taken by many composers and variations of the same melody is made. And, apologies, but I cannot tell the composer, I honestly, I don't really care, the melody is good.( But I don't think is Corelli's version, and from the dynamics and arrangement patterns, Vivaldi is not unlikely.)
Why there are so many people saying that "La Follia" was composed by A. Corelli? A "Follia" is a dance as a giga, corrente, sarabanda..., with some ostinate bass, like "Bergamasca", "Passacaglia", "Romanesca" or "Ciacona".
indeed, the follia di spagna [complete name] it's a very old theme probably from spain or the "new world" , probably invented in the 1400, that many artist used for a lot of variations. Just as merula did with is ciaccona, but with another theme
this is not vivaldi.. this version is one from Antonio Salieri.. Variazioni sulla La Follia... and the original piece is from Archangelo Corelli called La Follia...
La Follia -regardless of which version you listen to - is remarkably moving, considering how simple the tune actually is. It is capable - with variations in tempo and key - of touching on all human emotions. No wonder it's been popular for 300 or more years. - Hans
I would be grateful for any information on the marvelousl costumes worn by the female dancers which contributed so much to creating a wonderful period atmosphere.
I played this with a chamber group of six plus a pianist at a music camp last week, and. . .I'm sorry, I hated it. I play cello, and it was probably one of the most boring songs I've played. It's so repetitive! We only did 8 of the 20 variations, but I did get to play the 14th variation, which actually has some moving 8th notes. Sorry, guys.
that's because you played it on a cello and with a piano. Try playing it on a viol with a bunch more strings and then try improvising a bit. Then it is worth playing....or buy a really good recording with an original instrument and you'll think different! Try Jordi Savall...
The tune was done by many a baroque composer. To my knowledge nobody really knows who composed the original tune. It is late medieval ~ early renaissance.
I'm not quite sure, but either the "La Folia" theme was comceived by Marin marais or he was the first/one of the first to bring it into instrumental music.
La Folia was an old spanish folk melody that many baroque composers used for variation treatment. The earliest treatment is not Marais' but by Juan del Enzina in 1520. More recent examples include Beethoven hiding the theme in the Andante Con Motto of his 5th symphony.
Lully was the first one to bring it into instrumental music, meaning as to be known as a dance by the royalty. Marais, who was Lully's apprentice for some time, made the Folia variations from the standard theme Lully composed for winds and strings.
Actually the composer for this set of variations is Antonio Vivaldi. The Follia's melody comes from a hispanic-portuguese dance, and the melody was used by many composers to write sets of variations on the Follia. Other composers such as Bach, Geminiani, Lully, used the Follia for Variations.
I prefer Marais variations. Although, all the other variations are wonderful, and its how many variations came from a single work which is also a "Variation" of the typical spanish folia.
Corelli's is probably the best. Vivaldi comes in a close second. It has so much flair, drama and passion. Never gets boring. I think they skipped some of the variations which is too bad. I have the full version on my channel.
I simply agree with you about the follia,i'm also trying to compose some variations on that tune, anyway whenever I post them here in youtube,i was wonderin' if you would like to see them, because I studied some counterpoint and harmony by myself so...
The music is not played well, sorry.
