  • Correlation does not equal causation. I feel that it is much more likely the economic hardships the people on the island are enduring is because of this little recession were having. People aren't going to go on vacations when the economy is down. There are small parts of the islands beaches being shot down. If you got to hatteras today the vast majority of the beaches are still covered in cars.

  • if I understand the consitution correctly enviromental tyranny like this is a unjust taking of private property without just compensation. if enviromental people really care about animals, pay the people a fair market value of lost revenue to enact their policies. just don't enact laws that reduce an owners use of their property, give just compensation, just don't steal people's property rights like this. this is theft, and based on false science too.

  • The real damage to the entire Outer Banks economy are those uninformed people that say that that there is no beach access on Hatteras Island. This is not true. One can always go to the beach on Hatteras either on foot or vehicle.

    You may not be able to go to every beach all of the time but there is plenty of beach to go to

  • The beach closures do affect orv use it is true. There are now more businesses and people on Hatteras Island than ever. hatteras Island was a very quiet place 30 years ago. Receipts just for occupancy of vacation homes,campsites and condos totaled $99,700,000.00 for 2009. Almost all of the non park land on the Island is now developed.

    The beach driving is only one facet of the economy of Hatteras Island. A large part of visitors do not drive on the beach

  • This really has NOTHING to do with an "endangered bird" or "environmentalism!"  This is the UN's Agenda 21 at work. According to the UN Agenda 21 Biodiversity Map, Hatteras is in a RED ZONE, where NO HUMANS are allowed to live.

  • I used to be a strong environmemtalist and supported many environmemtal groups. I am still and environmetalist but no longer support any environmemtal groups, the reason is IMMIGRATION.

    If you look at the data we grew nearly 100 million in last 40 years nearly all via immigration and are on track to reach a half a billion via immigration in a few decades. Environmemtalists will put these people out of business to save a few birds but do nothing about immigration.

  • Thank you for giving the people of Hatteras a voice. Thousands of animals being killed for 10 birds is insane. Banning people from walking on a beach April-July for 5 nesting pairs is ridiculous. People call your reps and support bill S1557 to open the beaches again and end the needless slaughter of animals and the economy. Stand up to special interest groups like Audubon.

  • Thank you for giving Hatteras a voice. Most people have no idea what is going on with the beaches at Hatteras. They don't understand we had thousands of animals killed for 10 birds or that we are banned from even walking on the beach. The science behind the closurer is not scientific this is special interest at it's worst.

    It is not so much a documentary as it is giving a voice to the people ,something we have not had. The island's side has not been told and this video does that. People not on the island don't know about the foxes and raccoons and otters being killed for 5 birds. They don't know that people cannot WALK on the beach. They think it is just orv vs birds and it is not.

  • Very well done. As the producer says in Part 2, he's telling the story of the impact on people, not attempting deal with all aspects of "a really complex issue". My family visited there many years, and loved it. Those people there care more for the place than anyone else. They've lived there for generations. From the beginning, the process stunk to high heaven. The judge said right off the bat, he would shut them down. Congrats "judge". You've nearly wiped them out. Whose town is next ?

  • @sippycup333 This is a story, not a news piece. News pieces (should) show both sides of an issue, though they seldom do in these times. Stories have a point of view. The point of view of this video is that decent people are being abused. Every claim in it can be verified. How does it fall short with the lack of big org talking heads giving pat answers to questions they need to approve before any interviews are granted?

  • @PoliticalGuy2009 Really every claim can be verified? How about where you are suggesting that the spooky government wants to end all human life on Hatteras. It sounds like some far out Glen Beck conspiracy theory. Are you saying you asked the Non Profits and park service for interviews and they wanted questions in advance? If thats the case include that in your video.

    This just comes off as really one sided, and that takes away from the valid points the locals have.

  • @sippycup333 You have to experience this first hand. I visit there every summer and its gotten worse and worse. I was arrested there and pleaded guilty for a year probation and no fines, judge Boyle was nice enough to give me a year and a half probation and over $600 in fines. After viewing this story I now know what my money went to, more beach closings and the killing of dune foxes. This situation will not end until the upper hand achieves what they set out for. What that is exactly? Not sure.

  • They are birds for crying out loud. They are KILLING other animals for these birds how can anyone in their right mind think that is okay. You can't stop nature if the foxes want to eat those birds then they should be allowed if you kill every fox then they would be extinct then what are you going to do go and kill anything that might hurt a fox. Why doesn't the audubon society pool together their money create a big bird zoo and then they can go live there with their birds.

  • It's not the Government's choice to close the beaches. The National Park Service was taken to court by The Audubon Society and Defenders of Wildlife to close the beaches.

    In late June, when this was shot, Cape Point wasn't "closed," but there was no way to get to it because the beaches on both sides were closed. No one is claiming that all of the beaches are completely closed. But the closed beaches and the beaches that are inaccessible because of closures are restricting access to the point where tourism is diminished significantly during the peak season.

  • This isn't really about the birds. It's just an excuse for the govt. to seize property. Keep in mind, the government works for us. They can only do what people allow them to do. It's time to stand up to them. Kick out all incumbents, every damn one of them and start over again from scratch and make it what it's supposed to be... a government of the people, by the people and for the people, not a government dictatorship, not 310 million people ruled by 500 people in Washington DC. ENOUGH !

The Audobon Society is crushing an economy in Hatteras while they have put up for sale the last 13 acres of undeveloped beach in Corolla. Land that was left to them with the belief that they would be good stewards and keep it in its natural state.

  • I hate that this is happening. Closing the beach is doing no good for these birds anyways. I am a proud supporter of the OBPA.
