  • And it's probably 1969, as the album came out that year. Great though!!

  • that was the time and place to be...a-m-a-z-i-n-g

  • woodstock in the house?kkk

  • @MultiCorsan they owned a house in woodstock, NY. bob dylan bought it for them.

  • tight brothers

  • pretty sure this is not in woodstock, it's in LA at sammy davis jr.'s pool house where they recorded the 2nd album

  • @MrCharlieShuck You're right

  • @SilvioManfredDante85 It is definitely Woodstock (check title of film). I thought it might be Bearsville Studios, but doesn't look like the pics I've seen. Its not Big Pink. Maybe where Robby and his wife lived.

  • I love Richard Manuel's pants!

  • OMG Levon Helm has so much swag.

  • Fucking gods!

  • Buah, it's fantastic, complete armony.

  • It's fantastic god! T.T

  • Was jogging to this the other day (10000) mtr kept me going / Tune .

  • check out some covers of the band and originals on my channel

  • The Band is one of the greatest!

  • hi in shanna message me for good tunes :)

  • Richard Manuel still lives on in the heart of every fan...

  • This is a far better version than the one on the second album

  • Hey Rainmaker can you hear the call?

  • does anyone know what the first theme they play is? doo do do du da da

    I'd really like to know

  • Sounds and feelings deep rooted in the fibre the land; speaking only for a cetain section of its nation.

    (poor ol' Jethro!)

  • so relevent now. but i supose it will b 4 a long time yet

  • The band is the band

  • @kissocara plain and simple

  • go robbie!

  • absolute favorite tune and chest fever

  • I WORRRKKK FOR THE UNNNNIOONNN

  • the band is legendary

  • ひさびさ聞いてなんか感動した・・・

  • Fuck Robbie can wail

  • de argentina amo a la banda me cambiaron la vida gracis levon gracias manuel

  • @DraKashmir

    Muy bien, che!

  • Love the whole song but Levon's vocal "corn in the fields and then his percusssion and Garth's organ gives this song a slightly sinister quality.

  • A cigarette OR a joint. Sounds good to me. My God they are so so talented. And Rick Manuel's voice (and even Levon's) make this song a gem. I used to listen to them in the late 60s and liked them a lot then. They weren't druggie enough for me but now I've got over that and I appreciate them far more now than I did then.

  • wow, hard to believe a political argument could break out on a vid like this. wtf is wrong with people?

  • Richard Manuel ....what a voice....one of the best ever...R.I.P Richard we miss you!!!!

  • @buck65100 definately a voice of the times, didnt know he passed R.I.P

  • Awesome.

  • @dangerbirdzuma yeah brother. it's called ophelia. my spelling may be incorrect.

  • If one should want to ever understand the over-used term "Tight" , musically speaking,

here's a good place to start and quite possibly, end.

  • The boys. The best. The Band.

  • the band shall forever be in my heart

  • the first funky intro part, does anybody know if thats just jam or part of a real band song?

  • @dangerbirdzuma just a jam from what i know

  • @dangerbirdzuma

It's a part of the song, Listen to the studio version. The rhythm and chord structures of the Band are just unreal. Sometimes I swear they sound like Stax R&B session musicions. Eclectic really doesn't begin to describe their sound IMO.

  • read Levon's book"This Wheel's on Fire" you will not be sorry

  • why haven't i been listening to these guys all my life? i had heard a few of their songs and loved them, but practically all of their work is phenomenal.

  • @1701what Dunno all that I know is Canada, has some right under rated music.

  • Really superb. Even Levon's voice fits right in............

  • Is this video available to buy ????

  • @banks1645 If you google "Classic Albums" you will see The Band. It's one of the very best DVDs in the Classic Albums series..................I have it myself. Sadly I don't think you can get this recording except here. Hope this helps.

  • saw them at Harvard Stadium in 1970 +/ - there was some thing thing in the air

  • Robbie kind of looks like Sgt. Peppers John Lennon

  • @justinmc16 Yes now you mention it I see what you mean.

  • Richard Manuel has the greatest voice ever

  • @mudbathsunshower You speak the truth. There was so much soul in his voice, and I miss him so much. This will always be one of my fav Band songs because of it. To die by his own hand was especially disturbing because he was a great musician and, moreso, a beautiful human being. This band and that man are forever embedded in my heart. Young people will be discovering this music 100 years from now.

  • @farblonjet you should find the video (only audio though) of Richard singing 'Georgia' when they were still known as the Hawks.....incredibly beautiful.

  • Does anybody have any idea what the song is at the start, before they settle down and start King's Harvest Has Surely Come? My hear is crying not knowing what song that is, not being able to listen to it all day long D:

  • @IxXxIdontsIxXxI at the start they are all just jamming around. its not a particular song, their just having some fun.... Richard Manuel gives me chills each time he sings. I love theBand

  • MYHORSEJETHRO CLASSIC

  • King Harvest = Awesome. If there's anything else as good as that by The Band on YT, please let me know. Haven't found anything quite that good yet...

  • The saddest, deepest, most heartfelt song ever written about unrequited love. Death would feel like Heaven after a loss like this.

  • This is real talent

  • Saw them with Dylan at MLG back in 74, no fancy light shows just about the best music to come along though.

  • @micmor1950 Im pretty sure i understand your tone, but i want tell everyone maybe psychedelic shows had beginning light shows back then but I can guarantee there's no light show @ Levon's rambles today. That's not them - that's what lame acts do to bring brings in idiots who want a show - They put music #1 and were criticized at times for playing for each other on stage and ignoring the audience (i think because they had too much of the great RH's showmanship act in the ealy 60s)

  • I've been listening to this song like 5 times a day for the last couple of weeks. It's stuck on me bad.

  • statistics are bang on 1 in a100 are autistic

  • Richard is such a white Ray Charles.

  • I have been a fan for over 4 decades, love them as much as ever!

  • How could anyone click on dislike for this song?

They should be banned from YouTube???????

  • for every 1 person that downvotes this video, 100 people upvote it; 1 out of 100 people are autistic. Coincidence? I think not.

  • I meant "King Harvest," although "Long Black Veil" is magical as well..

  • First heard this on WBAI in NY in 1970, when I was having a rough time as a 15-year--old. This tune, and the entire album, helped a great deal. I just found this version and burst into tears. I almost never cry but the sheer magic of the musical interaction, Richard's passion and the amazing timeless lyrics touched something in me that is rarely touched. No other band can do that. None. I think they will keep being rediscovered by 15-year-olds for decades to come.

  • @Irony420 Boy, you sure said it! Thanks!!

  • @Irony420 Here rediscovered! by 20 thou lol

  • @Irony420 haha so true. I was about 15 when I found the band. I was on a plane to Philmont Scout ranch and the radio kept playing The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down over and over. I got home and fell in love with the Band. Thanks for the post!

  • @DreadScottamus @Irony420 Just checking out The Band on youtube and read these comments. I love The Band, and I too was 15 in the summer visiting an older cousin (16) when I listened to them. They epitomize great music on so many levels. I still enjoy them twenty years later. Was looking for a video of When You Awake, but found this one nonetheless.

  • @Irony420-Here's one. When I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, I broadened my tastes to bands like Radiohead and artists like Nick Drake. But, with a subscription to Rolling Stone since 8 years old, and a big fan of classic rock and knower of much trivia, I couldn't believe I'd overlooked these guys.

  • @thegunclub123

    I love Radiohead man

  • amazing that these 5 people found each other -proof that there are miracles

  • 24 people don't want the crops to grow

  • If one does not understand the importance of Mr. Hudson's contribution, it's because, one is not keepin it real.

  • wish they played kings harvest on the last waltz

  • @XtraPibbDude They played King Harvest at the Last Waltz. It's available on the 4-disc box set :)

  • I liked Robbie so much better before he affected the scarves and fedoras and cigarrette gestures....

  • Best Band ever! Saw them Twice. Once headlining with Linda Ronstadt and then opening for and then backing

    bob Dylan. Both in Toronto.

  • Loved watching this.Been a fan for years but only ever really saw them performing in the movie the last waltz. Still the best rock movie ever made.

  • Talent - plain and simple.

  • @apco01 ibew local 1852 .

  • Levon has a mullet...

  • Long Black Veil is a great song and The Band does the song a great justice and to LBurris507 im a proud member of IBEW Local 2077

  • Long Black Veil is a great song and The Band does the song a great justice

  • What a brillant song. For all the union people out there this one is for you.

  • 24 deaf people voted dislike

  • i heard The Band playing for the first time in 1968 and it changed my life.

since then there was no week without this divine music

  • Wow. The band playing their new classic in Woodstock. Can't get better than this. I would happily re-live the 70's over again just for the music.

  • what can a poor boy say ! pure class

  • Robertson looks like pepper era Lennon in this, especially playing the casino!

  • @ElevenTheBand and the stache!

  • All music should be recorded live in a basement on analog. Case closed.

  • @olesne damn straight

  • 2:32, Garth looks like teen wolf

  • who's that against the band? probably those ones that was fork in the ear when god was giving sound to people....although stones are my favorite, the bend is the mistress I like to stick to very, very often...

  • Who clicked "dislike?" Seriously, you 24 deaf people should be expelled from the world.

  • I'd give anything to be sitting in that room just listening and smoking a cigarette.

  • @AguinaldoJr ---Yepper, 'specially one of those 'Left Handed' ones------=D

  • @AguinaldoJr Now, you see, I'd even be willing to smoke a gawd-awful cigarette if I could be sitting there.

  • @AguinaldoJr You mean a fat joint.

  • A-men

  • @AguinaldoJr oh, you said it brother

  • YEAH!!

  • SIMPLY the most talented, humble and down to earth band ever. just pure passion for music and nothing else. nothing makes fills me with regret like the thought i'll never be able to see them performing together

  • @remrec08 I agree completely! completely!

  • envy thjose pink pants richard is wearing!

  • Richard Manuel. Is. The. Man.

  • Thanks for this great vid!!!

  • Pure fucking Magic!!!!!!!!

  • bass is too low in this vid. still great

  • ich liebe< es

  • The Band will live forever!!!!!!!!!!

  • For any of The Bands Fans, I highly recommend the movie " The Last Waltz". Awesome documentation of the band, and really what they are all about.

  • @Dane333W

Suppose, each Band admirer will know the movie.

I adore The Band so much that it is my favourite music movie ... alone for the band, but the guests, the excellent camera work, the material chosen, the sound, the interviews, the >composition< of the film, as well ! Mike

  • I believe that they are playing in Dylan's studio

  • @carlox1 - They are playing in Big Pink, the house they occupied near Woodstock, NY and where they wrote much of Music From Big Pink. Dylan also used the house for writing and recording -- it was where Dylan, backed by The Band, recorded The Basement Tapes. Dylan already was living in Woodstock, NY for a couple of years before The Band located nearby to be near Dylan (if I recall correctly).

  • @carlox1 - My last comment is incorrect. This, of course, is not the basement of The Big Pink.

  • Awesome piece of video.

  • Great songs! I can't believe I spent 20 min reading two assholes arguing on here-got sucked in I guess.... Being a teacher AND A LIBERAL, I don't think a lot of people realize how teachers are treated in non-union states, and more importantly-we HAVE to have checks and balances in this country on BOTH sides.

  • 23 people are related to Scott Walker.

  • Oh my god, Garth! How the hell did you get to be so fucking cool?!!!

  • Does anyone know why the bass has a metal guard on the strings

  • @Guitarstring187 its just old school i reckon

  • @Guitarstring187 - classic 50s precision with one floating pick up- its a pick up guard . i had to add one to a recent copy as i broke the pickup off using it as a thumb rest .

  • @Guitarstring187 The original precision basses had a pickup cover.

  • haha. I think it's quite obvious that I broke this phillyfunk character down a long time ago. He is just pissed because I spoke my mind with one comment not even directed towards him in the first place and he couldn't finish it. I upset him a few times and he comes off as breaking me down. Funny. This guy can't fight(debate) his way out of a wet paper bag. Dumb Liberal, Fascist, Hypocritcal Clown.

  • fuck!!!!!!

  • @cottone592 They're most likely just jamming

  • I would love to work for the union!!!!! bring them back!!! the corporations are little governements with not enough to keep them in check!!!

  • We underaged musicians used to wait for them to drive down Dundas st and wave to them as they made their way to the gig at the Brass Rail in London Ont. in the 60's. Fake ID rarely got us in but we never stopped trying . They were our heroes even until today .

  • Timeless people, timeless.

  • @cottone592

    i'm curious, too.

  • The decline of the middle class in recent years has been directly proportionate to the decline of collective bargaining rights. Corporations, banks, Wall Street, lobbyists -- all have a place at the table to ensure a continuation of power and wealth. The everyday working stiff has next to nothing. Ironic that this song's Depression-era scenario as illustrated by Robbie (and brought to life by Richard) carries more in the way of optimism than most present-day laborers would be able to muster.

  • its crazy but this is a band that sounds better live then on cd. All of their live stuff is so much better!!!

  • @Guitarstring187 Where have you been? A lot of bands have better live performances than in the stereo room. There is no edited crap.

  • God, I love Rick Danko. Arms flapping around, just belting it out... what a great guy.

  • wonderful music,

    nothing can beat The Band

  • @tiemyshoes92

Although far from perfection, this live piece has got sth. !!!

And I agree happily: Yeah, they are one of the best bands ever, belonging to my top 3 choice. (If u r keen on: C S N & Y, King Crimson r the other 2. If we put aside the Fab Four who are beyond any criticism for what they did for popular music.) Great, charming, powerful video of the gentle giants ! Mike

  • @michaelvoland54 They're in my top three as well with King Crimson, but my third is Led Zeppelin. CSNY is great too though, without a doubt.

  • Happy Birthday Richard-you still are the best!

  • I don't listen to them that much... But I have a feeling... that they are perhaps the greatest band of all time. I'm frightened by this.

  • Some of these pro-anti union comments are hilarious. Fact is in the long run, education and your marketability are what are going to get you ahead in life, unions or not. I'm by no means pro or even anti union, but I still enjoy this SONG.

  • Only law enforcement and the medical field should have unions. They risk their lives and save lives. People who work in any business and Teachers shouldn't even have unions at all. Those resources should be allocated to the military.

  • @fingerp We're talking about musuic....Right?

  • @225marklin Last time I checked, NO.

  • @225marklin Long live unions. Fuck the greedy corporations. They have been greedy since capitalism was thought off. History shows us that they will abuse us unless we do somthing about it. Point in case GE didnt have to pay taxes for 14 billion dollars and got a return of 3.5 billion form the us gov. When the gov gets taken over by corporations and relgigion we start the beginning of tyranny.

  • People who know they have the union to rely on means they have no reason to add to the economy in a productive way that adds true value to the business and economy. They become lazy. They may make more because of unions but they truly don't deserve the added pay because they didn't prove they deserve it. Unions don't believe in a Meritocracy. They want everybody to be medicore. Anti-competitive and anti capitalistic.

  • Communisim -

Pros: Classless society, workers/unions owning the means of production, boarderless society

Neg: You can't really have the chance to be a major property owner, form a monopoly, or be a stock holder.

In other words there are no pros for Communism. We have to have classes in Society. It's called competition to get ahead and better yourself. Obama does the exact opposite.

  • Unions are responsible for low wages not companies. If you want better pay, look for a better job. Why should a millionare distribute his or her wealth who made it the right way in a Capitalistic Society? It's not their fault the welfare collector doesn't know how to make a profit. Obama continues to use his politics to have all classes fight each other.

  • And a better guitar solo

  • Better than the album version. Unbelievable singing and Levon is more aggressive.

  • I'm so glad this has so many views. Yay!

  • this song is Mint

  • Would love to have seen what Richard did or said at the end of King Harvest! I wonder if they filmed more of The Band from that session.

  • @PhillyPhunk yeah, four or fore. BFD. That is apparently the least of your problems you like to deal with
