@888pineapple888 my brothers truck didnt have one and it was REALLY weird. i was nervous because i couldnt see anything when it came to how hard i needed to press the gas. i use the tachometer for lots of things! thats how i discovered the electrical problem in my car

One thing I have to mention on the escort's, is that the valve seats and or pistons can blow on the engine. Just retired my 99 due to a the piston blowing out. I have 134,000 miles. Too bad :(

@araflygare Escorts from 91 to 2002 have the Mazda beep. It's cause they're really Mazda Protege's, redesigned and have Ford engines pretty much.

@xboxfreak3601000 lets be honest..... buying an escort requires the driver to know full on hand that the valve seats in exhaust might overheat and break apart causing damage to pistons, piston walls, the actual valves itself, might create a hole in the cylinder head. now i have a 98 escort bought brand new in 98. acceleration wise is poor compared to the protege, but better than civic and corolla in same year. quick cure for overheating valve seats: keep heat on at full blast at all times.

@xboxfreak3601000 also 295000km's or 183000 miles currently. the sport should contain the same type of engine. rear spring/strut towers are very weak (manufacturing defect). otherwise...... fun car to drive, especially in winter as a beater.

I own a 98' escort and the engine does not sound like your car's at all, yours sounds really cool. It's true, the interior is so artless, but it is completely functional. I love my car.

I have the same year model. 100K. It is reliable. Is the loud sound of the engine a symptom of something going wrong or just the way it is made. My sounds loud as well and it annoys me a bit. Other than that OK. Should I wait with timing belt replacement to recommended 120K or just go for replacement before that. It is 10 years old car. Thanks for comments.

I believe you Americans only got the 1.9L petrol model? We had a load of different engines: Kent, CVH, Zetec, Turbo Diesel, and of course, the Cosworth!

my first car was the 98' escort, me, having a heavy foot my parents got me the 2liter hatchback with the limiter at 80... You can floor it and guaranteed you wont go over 60mph........ guaranteed. 30mpg is nice when you have no money being a teenager, but i hated that car. I can smash the brakes in at 20mph and it will take around 50ft to stop, that car had the most horrible breaks in the world!! I didnt even want to drive it!!

I have a 99 escort lx, but it has the manual windows and locks. Sounds exactly the same, and I put a cd player in it. They're quite comfortable and you only hear the engine cause there wasn't much insulation put it in. They're the same as the mazda protege, frame and all, except some style changes and it has a ford engine.

i had a 97 mercury tracer (rebadged ford escort) and it was still pretty cheap. when i test drove, the literally swayed side by side on the freeway. The engine sounded the same as this one. However my car was a base model (The stereo was just AM/FM, no CD or cassette) and it has a tachometer. Anyway great videos kyle

The car does sound kinda loud but, I guess it being a four-banger, it would be. The interior is very plain and boring looking. It'd look good if it had a wood or carbon fiber trim kit in it. Other than that, it's a cute little car. I'd drive it.

its a good car i have one it sure is a gas saver but i like driving fast so it runs out quick. ive hit 115mph on it without mods on it. it only sounds loud if you replace the speakers with good ones and have a cassette adapter and plug in an ipod it sounds pretty loud.

Man I can totally back up that statement. Mines a blast to drive. 5 speed, short shift (Cause the stock one has a shift length of about 2 feet, jk), magnaflow exhaust and an intake. It really opens the car up :) I actually have quiet a bit of fun with it and I still get an average of 32 mpg with it

There are 2 things that noticeably annoy me about the interior. 1) The almost circular center control console. 2) The really tall gear selector.

Of course, it's all a matter of personal preference, some people may find those to be attractive designs. I wouldn't say I downright hate the thing, but I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of it either.

It drives okay...for an Escort. Just looks like the shifts are kinda tough under hard acceleration. Alignment is waaay off too.

that is correct... shifts are rough at hard acceleration, kinda hard when you accelerate too slow.... so you must put in enough gas to make it shift smoothly..... alignment is way off- sooooooo off. we had to fix it a couple of times to get it....OKAY. lol
