Hey thunderfoot. That last place where you do your commentary is Canmore. My home town. That's 'three sisters' on your right and 'Grotto' on your left. You actually pan past my house! Glad you liked it here and there is tons of fantastic climbing and ski touring all over.
From about 5:59 to 6:06 you were passing drumlins on the left side of the road. These are elongated hills made of glacial till formed on the morley flats by a glacier coming out of the mountains during the last glacial maximum.
It's always fun to go explore a continent... I did that with about half of Australia... Should go see the other half sometimes perhaps.
Been to Rockies before too, far as North America goes though. Lovely scenery there... Guess I've been to lots of places, so I can appreciate the sense of exploration!
He said in another vid that he does so both to preserve the car (he's had some breakdown issues previously I think) and because of the equipment he has in it like the telescope, so he drives gently to avoid damaging anything.
You should go to Big Rock, right outside of Okotoks, AB (south of Calgary). Its the worlds largest glacial erratic, and it came from about 100km north of the icefields parkway, from Mt. Edith Cavell!
Fantastic stuff. I visited the ice fields pathway 2 years ago, and did a very similar journey, going into Drumheller and the Royal Tyrell Museum which had been an ambition of mine since I was about 4 or 5 years old. Absolutely fantastic place. Thoroughly envious of you doing it now! Keep it up, I look forward to seeing where you head off to next, and thanks for showing others this amazing scenic area :)
There is a "creation science" museum about an hour north of Drumheller. I did a day trip to the two of them. When I was at the creationist propaganda mill, they said "go to drumheller to see the exhibits. Come here to see the truth". It was pretty funny. It was all just AIG stuff.
Ahh, no way! If I'd had known I'd had convinced my parents to drive over there for the lulz. I've always had a somewhat masochistic interest in creation "museums" and how they're run, and whether it really is just AIG regurgitated without thought :P
I have to give them credit. They had some nice (albeit small) dioramas of things, and life sized heads of dinosaurs mounted on the walls like hunting trophies. I suppose thats their version of the dino with a saddle...
I tried to talk with the guy who runs/owns/built it, but he wasn't there. The guy manning the desk, when confronted about their diorama about fossils taking millions of years, he just turned his head and pretended like he no longer heard me talking.
As a native Albertan, we were raised with being told that the glacial runoff lakes were blue from diffraction, aided by glacial silt. However, I recall a limnology grad student at University of Alberta, during my graduate schooling there, that some of it is due to algae, at least in some lakes.
TF, are you heading to Ontario on your trip? If you are you gotta check out the Niagara escarpment. I live in Kitchener and its about 30 minutes North east near Milton. Doesn't compare to the Rockies but it goes on forever and has some pretty great views.
At the summit of Bow Pass on the Icefields Parkway is the path to the Peyto Lake overlook. This view is towards the north and the Mistaya Valley.
The blue color of the lake is caused by suspended glacial silt. These tiny, tiny particles are called glacial rock flour and they flow into the lake in the summer.
The particles range from 0.01 micron to 2 micron. This allows Rayleigh Scattering to produce the color by the same method that makes the sky a blue color.
Lake Louise is IN Banff National Park, but it's a separate place from the town of Banff. It's a 40 minute drive away. I worked in Lake Louise for years...
LOL Not really, but i can imagine him living out of an RV that's been decked out with his plane workshop, camera lab and various telescope mounts. I think screaming kids and bitchy wives would ruin trips like this.
I know it might not be as scenic as what you've been experiencing, but if you have the chance, stop by in saskatoon (that is if you're heading east) If not I understand
He's been taking it easy on the car because he's driving so far and he doesn't want to end up running it into the ground before he gets home. The journey is quite epic if you watch it from the beginning
Yes, once you leave the Rocky Mountains towards Calgary, and all the way to Drumheller, is probably the most boring drive, ever! Glad to see you skipped posting the video of that. =P
Great sense of pacing and optics. Absolutely breathtaking scenery, but the editing sensibilities add even more to viewing experience. Really really great job.
Actually, he does wash in nice clear lakes and such. We see an example of that near the end of the Crater Lake (Part 1) video. He also visited FactVsReligion's home and got cleaned up and patched up there.
Try actually watching instead of just looking to find something shitty to comment.
I love your driving videos, they give people a good idea just how vast Canada really is, the sad thing is that most Canadians themselves don't realize just how big our country really is until they do a cross-country drive like you.
If you drive long days, 14-16 hours you can make it from Vancouver to Toronto in 3 days but you have to start early and stop late but if you're in a hurry otherwise take you time, enjoy and do it in 6 or 7 days
Totally...he is making a wounderous journey isn't he? I have to admit to a little envy in that department, life hasn't afforded me the opportunity..atleast not just yet. Cool to see someone else form Edmonton on here...thought I was the one and only...peace be with good brother.

If I recall correctly, the fine sediment that makes the water blue is known as "Rock Flower".
Ashybasha 2 years ago
"Rock FLOUR"
because the rock is so finely pulverized that is stays in easy suspension in the water, refracting the blue end of the spectrum.

4:57...the Three Sisters
5:09 ...Grotto Mountain [I think]
Every one of those mountains has an established trail to the summit. Anyone in reasonably good condition can hike to the top in under 3 hours.
I have personally been to the peak of several of them near Banff/Canmore.
