In his memoir he admits the regret he felt for not joining the service and was much of the inspiration to some of his more conservative and controversial at the time movies he directed, such as the Alamo and The Green Berets. Second, it was not his lawyers as it was Republic Studios that had to ask for the deferment. Finally, who cares if he did not join, last I checked John Adams and Thomas Jefferson did not join the military either. To be heroic does not require shooting people. To be heroic only requires standing up for one's defined principles.
At least other draft dodgers like Errol Flynn, Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Van Johnson and others didn't hypocritically set themselves up as chickenhawks after the war, or blacklist others who actually served.

"Ike" was kinda like Zachary Taylor and Ulysses S. Grant: All of them highly competent war heros who were coaxed into entering politics, when they should have stayed out of that game.
Taylor died early in office, however, so we'll never know what kind of president he would have made, though I doubt it would have been any more impressive than what we had, from Harrison until Lincoln (Polk was the only competent Chief Executive during that era, I think).

Although the USA didn't enter the war in Europe officially until much later it was shipping armaments food and clothing to England from the outset. One important move by President Roosevelt was to supply naval and air escorts (destroyers, sub-chasers, patrol boats) to British shipping fleets, even though Congress had not authorized such an action. This move was instrumental in getting supplies through the German submarine blockade.

First off, the draft is immoral as the government does not own you nor anyone else (this coming from a prior-Marine). Second, it was not his lawyers as it was Republic Studios that had to ask for the deferment. Finally, who cares if he did not join, last I checked John Adams and Thomas Jefferson did not join the military either. To be heroic does not require shooting people. To be heroic only requires standing up for one's defined principles.
