There is no rule. It just depends on the Refs. Most will wait till it hits the ice and others will step in as soon as they have a chance to without getting hit themselves
There's no set rule on when the linesmen jump in. IT usually comes down to the safety of both the players and the refs. If the fighters are still throwing heavy bombs back and forth, the refs dont want to get caught across the jaw with an errant punch. Also, if one fighter is getting demolished, or if both look like they've significantly slowed down because they are tired they'll step in. As for a knockdown, if the guy bounces right back up again they'll often let them keep going.

Personally, I think this was a good trade, there's not much they could really do with the cap, and Lupul has been stepping up his game. Carcillo brings just as much energy as Upshall, but can actually back up his mouth. Carcillo can also crash the net, and score every now and then, it's not like the flyers are running on empty with offense, they have 5 players with 20+ goals. Sometimes I think people like Upshall more for his looks than for his playing ability.

Upshall should not have beeen dealt. He's a great player. High energy, very fast, and good defensively. He doesn't score a lot because he usually plays with Cote and Asham. But if you didn't noticed, the opponent rarely scores against his line. Lupul should have been traded...he's too expensive for what he brings.
maybe we can somehow get back upshall in the offseason. That's what happened to erik cole, he played on the canes, got traded to the oilers, got traded right back to the canes.

Dude Carcillo is more than a tough guy. He plays just like Upshall plays except he can fight and agitate the hell out of people. He can also play on the PP and the PK. You should be pissed about the 2nd round pick which is what has me pissed. But Carcillo isn't just a goon. Upshall is so overrated here in Philly. His 7 goals he scored WOW
yeah he played the powerplay and penalty kill on the coyotes that is a lot different then the flyers it was a terrible pickup he does not have the same skills and assets as scottie upshall, dumbest move of homer's life.

He beat Upshalls offensive production last year.. Upshall had 7 goals WOW. Carcillo has the same amount of minor penalties as Coburn. LOL Most of his penalties are fighting majors. He has 18 fights you know. Know what you are talking about before you talk.
Upshall didn't have great hands, but he was a pretty good athlete. He hustles his ass off too. That goes a long way, with me at least. Best of luck to him.
Comparing two guys on the basis of their statistics when they're in such different situations is difficult. Giving some of Upshall's minutes to Powe and Giroux get's you more bang for your buck salary cap wise, and Riley Cote is most likely the weakest link on the club (no offense to Cote), so an upgrade at his spot makes more sense.

Alot of times if goes to the ice the refs will stop it, but some refs decide too let the players fight.

They'll never get rid of fighting in hockey and this fight shows exactly why. Hugely entertaining, the players and fans were into it, it doesn't get better than that.

That was probably the best fight I've ever seen. Dorsett is the only person I've seen that could take Carcillo or even be a match for him. Damn good fight.

na asham is one of the best pound for pound and carcillo is a beast. granted cote loses a ton of fights but hes more then willing to drop them with much bigger guys. its a good 3 to have. i think cote will get better next year

are you serious cote? he is 4-12-4 this season that is so fucking bad, carcillo had a pretty good record but he isnt a heavyweight and asham has had an up and down year he has lost to some really bad fighters and his record isnt all that great you can't say they are really back they fight a lot ill give them that but they barley win any of them

nooo? cote loses every fight and that is a disadvantage for the flyers, winning fights not only pumps up the player but also their team and everyine else wants to play more physical and agrresive what the flyers need is a new heavyweight who can actually win fights

Personally, I think this was a good trade, there's not much they could really do with the cap, and Lupul has been stepping up his game. Carcillo brings just as much energy as Upshall, but can actually back up his mouth. Carcillo can also crash the net, and score every now and then, it's not like the flyers are running on empty with offense, they have 5 players with 20+ goals. Sometimes I think people like Upshall more for his looks than for his playing ability.

Someone on here called this fight a unanimous decision. I respectfully disagree. Carcillo Landed some Good shots U KNOW Dorsett felt then AND after the fact. Slight edge to Dorsett..The 2nd round pick pissed me off a bit too..Good acquisition, Lousy terms . I agree with the others on here about LUPUL going instead..BTW, From what I read in The Local Rag, Carcillo had 17 goals last season. If he avoid dumb ass penalties, He'll be cool. I think Homer is hoping will be a Tocchett-Esque Player

Oh and another thought...Trade deadline came and went, and the Flyers Continue into the playoffs with Goaltending that could be best Described as "AHL Starter/NHL Backup" Quality..Team has ALL The ingredients to go DEEEEP into the playoffs EXCEPT a Goalie...One Definite Blemish on Homer this season regarding trades......And a Hell of Sight worse than jettisoning Upshall whom they could easily reaquire next season, And Just Might!

you young-ins have no idea. its about time the Flyers brought back the Broad Street Bullies. Carcillo, Cote, Asham, Hartnell, (and occasionally Richards) can own the league. They are by far the toughest team in the NHL. You show me a tougher team, I show you a GM that knows what the hell he's doing. Flyers will be in the semi-finals at the very least.

I agree to what you are saying. However, I think it would have been better to trade Lupul for a few reasons:
1) Lupul is too expensive for what he does
2)Upshall is cheaper, and more energetic
3)Upshall can actually fight somewhat, unlike Lupul.
Still, with Cote, Asham, Hartnell, Carcillo, Richards, and Upshall all on the Flyers, that would be AMAZING.

I don't know the details of the players contracts, but this looks like a move to save money. I wouldn't say it's the dumbest move by the Flyers. Trading Manderville for (convicted rapist) Billy Tibbets was more of a head scratcher. Why did we need to give up a 2nd round pick though? I'm more sore about that than Upshall.

i hope carcillo does well with the flyers. i hope he's what they see in him. to me it looks like we got rid of upshall, a very underestimated player, for just a fighter.

Upshall should not have beeen dealt. He's a great player. High energy, very fast, and good defensively. He doesn't score a lot because he usually plays with Cote and Asham. But if you didn't noticed, the opponent rarely scores against his line. Lupul should have been traded...he's too expensive for what he brings.

maybe we can somehow get back upshall in the offseason. That's what happened to erik cole, he played on the canes, got traded to the oilers, got traded right back to the canes.

As a Flyers Fan im very disapointed, homer could of done alot more to help the Flyers d-line but didnt, and what was the point of getting Carcillo? We already have two tough guys in Cote, and Asham. We already lead the league in penaltys, and by adding this guy, how does that help? You cant always depend on your goalie and the PK. Im very very disapointed

Dude Carcillo is more than a tough guy. He plays just like Upshall plays except he can fight and agitate the hell out of people. He can also play on the PP and the PK. You should be pissed about the 2nd round pick which is what has me pissed. But Carcillo isn't just a goon. Upshall is so overrated here in Philly. His 7 goals he scored WOW

yeah he played the powerplay and penalty kill on the coyotes that is a lot different then the flyers it was a terrible pickup he does not have the same skills and assets as scottie upshall, dumbest move of homer's life.

carcillo doesn't even have half the goals upshall does. carcillo has 3 goals... whoop-de-doo. besides, now the flyers will be shorthanded each game more than full strength. carcillo takes stupid penalties, which is why he is leading the league in penalty minutes.

He beat Upshalls offensive production last year.. Upshall had 7 goals WOW. Carcillo has the same amount of minor penalties as Coburn. LOL Most of his penalties are fighting majors. He has 18 fights you know. Know what you are talking about before you talk.

Upshall didn't have great hands, but he was a pretty good athlete. He hustles his ass off too. That goes a long way, with me at least. Best of luck to him.
Comparing two guys on the basis of their statistics when they're in such different situations is difficult. Giving some of Upshall's minutes to Powe and Giroux get's you more bang for your buck salary cap wise, and Riley Cote is most likely the weakest link on the club (no offense to Cote), so an upgrade at his spot makes more sense.
