I really don't know what to think....these two are magnificent.....but made mistakes. S & P were clean AND beautiful...but not as difficult or in quite the same league artistically as B & S. Would be interesting to see how it would turn out under the current CoP system.
@nepadude B&S would get HUGE score for their SP' so LP wouldn't decide anything. Probably the technical score in the LP would be very close - B&S would get higher base for elements, but slightly lower GOE. (Another thing is that one of S&P lifts could be called illegal - and they wouldn't medal at all). But B&S would get huge components score- so they would most probably win LP as well (just as they did in 2002 - won the presentation score)
Well, what can you say, this wasn't a clean program, on both Sikharulidze's jump and the first triple landing of Berezhnaya, whereas S&P were technically flawless. I think this program is much more beautiful, better music, better choregraphy and costume.
I still think that the Russians deserved the gold medal alone. And the Canadians, the silver. The performance of the Russians was much more difficult than the Canadians, even with the errors.
Thank you for posting this beautiful quality clip. This was stunning in 2002 and still wins the gold, hands down, IMO. Difficult, precise, fast, intertwining moves...no contest. The only good thing about the "scandal" was that it led to the infinitely better scoring system we now have where difficult SKATING is properly rewarded rather than just whether or not you jump cleanly. Thanks for the reminder.
I think B&S had better artistry and creativity. They really only made one mistake, on the side by side double axels. But I think you're right about the need for a change in the scoring system. I would have done it differently, but there needed to be more accounting for elements other than jumps.

Hrm... I didn't see this the night it was broadcast. now I see why the Russians must've been pissed. It's not like he fell from that jump.
