Wars created by cowards and arming criminals.... The 2 pianos, brutally blown up by some ignorant imbecil gorilla at the JFK in 2002, are just a little piece of the mosaic. What a wonderfull world, artist and interview.
Thank You pianovirus for that treasure. Mr. Zimerman is so fantastic artist and as I recently discovered He's also fantastic person - with sense of humour and modest; I think too much modest. But not only in USA he have problems. Every time he organise something in Poland, there are problems with stupid people who don't respect artists f.ex. poor organisation of concerts or last Chopin Competition prize for best sonata. By the way I'm impatiently waiting for his 2013 album with Chopin sonatas.
Thank you so much for uploading this interview. You know, I came across it by an accident (was just listening to some piano on youtube), and it I enjoyed this interview tremendously! Thank you!
Abrazo
What I wanted to say is that I did extensive research on pianists like Svjatoslav Richter, Arthur Rubinstein or Andrei Gavrilov, I have overlooked one of the greatest pianists of our times, Krystian Zimerman, and need to catch up learning more about his great art and his artistic motivation. I was fascinated to discover this great artist only recently. Hope this is clearly enough said!
@Gidenkidenk That's not what he said..he said the way the politics had been going disturbed him, and that a change in administration would make him revisit his decision. The latest rumours I've heard indicate that he's planning a west coast tour in winter of 2011.
I've listened to all five videos of this riveting interview. An eccentric and fascinating man although of course one cannot agree with all aspects of what he says as most of his views are extremely radical!
Kristian's great charm, charisma, vision, passion for music and art, love for people, great ethics, and so on and so on always fascinated me and stil do. Mr. .Zimerman follows in the footsteps of his great predecessors like Arthur Rubinstein and Karol Malcuzynski, both of Polish origin (like me). I am proud of all of them and Chopin, certainly. Bravo maestros !!!
Pianovirus - What a great interview! I've only heard him once live, playing Brahms' Sonatas: It was a fantastic concert. I hope he comes back to America.
Pianovirus - many, many thanks for posting this! It was a pleasure to listen to him having his way explained. Extraordinary man in every sense, a great artist ... and what a sense of humour!
You're welcome, Qumak13, and I fully agree with your comment! Regarding his nice humour: I saw him recently live in concert and as encore he started to play the 1st mv of Moonlight sonata, but let it "evolve" into Happy Birthday (because a friend of his who was attending had his birthday that evening) - it was wonderful!
He was definitely right when he said cowards start wars, but I don't see how America gets a bad reputation for defending herself against terrorists. However, I still love Zimmerman. He is a great pianist.
The war in Iraq and the killing of innocent civilians had and has nothing to do with defense against terrorism (a war tactic, not a real description for a group of people who need a much more nuanced, circumstantial description). The means by which that war was and still is fought - the privatization of whole armies - is the legacy that will have the most severe repercussions. War became a growth industry, yet nobody seems to notice or care.
What a great interview, a great personality!! I really would like to see him a concert, preferably playing Chopin, but I would be glad just to hear him :) Thanks for posting this :) Truly inspiring! :)
The whole interview is one of the more interesting I've ever heard, I'd say. Much appreciation to pianovirus. Zimerman is a somone who effortlessly inspires me to do my best.
Zimmerman not playing in america because of the politics is very saddening. I feel that had his pianos not been destroyed he may not have made the same decision.
very interesting, and I agree, Mr.Zimerman is not only intelligent but eloquent. But I think the major credit goes to the interviewer who really communicated with him on a philosophical level, and asked appropriate questions to expand Zimmerman's views. It's really rare to hear that sort of true communication.

Sadly, you US guys didn't throughfully listen to him.
The 2 pianos, brutally blown up by some ignorant imbecil gorilla at the JFK in 2002, are just a little piece of the mosaic.
He repeatedly said that the most important thing for him is the relationship with the audience.
When he says "politics" he means those things that, as of now, are expression of you as the people of United States.
He just doesn't want to play his art for someone that he thinks does not deserve it.
I am sorry, save it.

Thank you so much for posting! Great artist, good interviewer too! Were Zimerman's pianos at or near the WTC?
