I loved a young man when I was 21 and he was 18. He was very sweet and kind to me. Better than anyone I have ever known. It did not last but that sweet memory is still with me. He loved music. He subsequently died in New Orleans after being stabbed in the heart two days before Valentines Day. He would have been 29 in May. He was not what he seemed when I first met him, but I would take that thorn any day. The memory had faded somewhat but this brought it all back. What a gift.
I simply adore her!! Had the chance to meet her once, talked a while, she is so down to earth, warm and lovely! And tiny :) amazing woman, voice and music...
I first heard this song at the end of some horror movie long ago and can't recall the name of it. Does anyone know? It was something like Prom Night - some teenage thriller horror film. Thank you!
Mary must be unusual for a woman in that she has got considerably more beautiful as she has got older (see the 1979 clip for proof!) and her voice has mellowed too. I think her singing was at its best in the early 90s - since then she seems to have gone a bit warbly (maybe too much influence from the Mary J. Blige school of never singing 1 note when 197 will do). This isa great song though - as is all of the Babes in The Wood and No Frontiers albums.
I just didn't realise the significance of this song. S explained it to me. How it has come true - because I was too stupid to see that I had the greatest love that I ever could, and then let her go.
This is Julie Matthews song, I know because I was 1 of 4 people at her house when she played it for the first time, & She told us M B had taken an option on it, The Best Version of it is by Pat Shaw on the Lies & Alibis Album (Fat Cat Records FATCD001)Pat & Julie were a Duo at the time. Mary black is Brilliant though
Mary Black truly has a voice as sweet as a Rose, that gives one the pleasure of a beautiful rendition holding you griped in the delight of a clear melody that stays with you in pleasant remembrance of a crystal clear voice the is second to none.
Wow she is aweswome, I first heard her voice while shopping at a music store in Galway in around 1990 I also got to see her in the Greats Woods concert Massachustts, and in Newport Rhode Island at the newport folk festival....... wow if you ever get the chance. When ever I hear this song I think of my first true love and how I screwed that up.... If I only knew then what I know now I would have married that Irish wonderful lass
Mary Black is awesome! Thank you so much for posting this video! This song speaks to so many of us on so many different levels. I can't imagine anyone else singing it but Mary.

Great video, especially when you notice that you notice that a very young Eleanor McEvoy is playing electric piano right behind Mary!

Please. Greatest love you'll ever have is nowhere outside yourself. Poetry is easy. Getting out of the way of it is difficult.
