to me, everything looked fine untill it went off that mini cliff thing just after it landed,. I think if that wasn't there, more people would of survived
@machinegunboy98 the memo said 550 feet/min. at that rate, they had a little over three minutes to fuel dump. me bieng a moron about planes, i know nothing about dump rates, but it couldn't be more than 300 gallons of jet fuel iven if they could. it was an accident that was unavoidable after the prop jacked up.
@machinegunboy98 I'm not an expert either.. and it is something I've thought about before.. but I don't think gliding a plane down on only one good wing works.. definitely not bigger planes.. you need a certain forward velocity to be able to fly. So my guess is that to make any kind of (semi-)controlled landing, you will need at least one engine to prevent you from just falling out of the sky (happened in holland about 2 years ago: TK1951 ) unless maybe you make the perfect glide in one go..
im not being mean or anithing but if they turned the other working enjine of the would have more chance of not dieing and they would have better balance, they could glide etc....
I was a Brasilia FO at ASA when this happened and knew the crew personally. It was a difficult time for all of us, but my heart goes out to those who were injured and to those who lost loved ones.
A truly shocking crash, I can't begin to imagine how traumatising it was for everyone on board the 529. To the 10 people, especially the Pilot, R.I.P. Were it not for the Pilot, all 29 people on board would've died.
You don't seem to know much about wing physics, you say that after the left wing failed the left wing became useless, that's not true, a two engined plane should be able to fly on one of it's engines, never heard of one that CANT.
@SgtMustang I think you have misunderstood what is being said my friend. A two engined plane will fly on one engine but in this case, the propellor shifted the entire engine to a 45 degree angle. This had a severe effect on the aerodynamics "INEFFECT" made the plane react as if it had lost the use of one of the wings. Propellor trim, ailerons, rudder was doing nothing. If it was just an engine failure, why do you think they crashed?
I ran this call, my ambulance was second on the scene, it was unlike anything you can imagine. some people were burned beyond recognition, others looked good enough to walk into a business meeting. It was crazy how drastic the differences were in the injuries. I will never forget it, the sounds, the smell, trying to get the co-captain out of the burning wreckage through the window. Until you see where they landed this plane you will never understand how good the pilot was. It was a miracle.
my friend steve wilkinson, who was a minister, was on that plane and died a few months after the crash. this is a beautiful dedication to the memory of those who died on Flight 529.. thanks for posting this!

Considering that the pilot landed the plane in the safest way possible due to years of experience, I think you should rethink your ignorant and rude response. When the plane landed, everyone was alive. A fire tore through the plane after impact, which is common, and what caused fatalities. Since this pilot's heroic and brave choices were what caused the plane to stabilize rather than nosedive, and save my uncle who was on board, I appreciate him and everything he did in his last moments.
canadianpilot09 has an idea and is suggesting a different way of handling the situation. You can agree or explain why the idea is wrong in your opinion, but there is no need for personal insults.
well u think of how fast they were going, ya up to 350 knots, the ppl would have died from wip-lash, but now u gonna say it cant go that fast, gravity and the waght of the plane, and glidability would maake it go that fast, care to prove me wrong
Every armchair quarterback should save his 2 cents and read niccakolio's post again.
Shutting off your only operating engine would be an idiotic thing to do, especially when you are essentially flying on one wing. That Brasilia was only marginally controllable yet they crew managed to get it on the ground with EVERYONE alive when it came to a stop in that field. Being second guessed by Keyboard Captains is an insult to both Matt Warmerdam and the memory of Ed Gannoway.
@smash29 Plus we can now see the full picture. At the time they didn't understand why a failed engine would pull the plane so violently to the left. That was because of the broken off propeler hub. The captain had experience flying this type of plane with only one engine, but never expierienced such a violent bank.
Furthermore, canadianpilot09, it's probably much easier to sit on a comfy computer chair in the safety of your own home and purport what you would have done in a circumstance you have never lived through, but in all likelihood, if you are ignorant enough to respond saying how it should have been handled, you're probably still a novice pilot and I wouldn't want to place my life in your hands with such self-righteous comments as that.
Yes, there was a fire and that's what claims lives in a lot of otherwise survivable crashes. I've walked through the wreckage of a burned out aircraft and it's pretty obvious just how intense the fire gets...not to mention a bit scary when you make your living driving these things. The drivers onboard this particular flight did a really great job under the cicumstances. Dealing with so much drag all of a sudden could be very disorientating. Caps off to them both.
Gary Pomerantz has written a new book on the ASA 529 disaster that makes for gripping reading. As far as I'm concerned, the pilots did an unbelievably phenomenal job of handing the damaged aircraft. Wherever you are, Robin Fech, you deserve a medal of valor. In their grief, some family members have lashed out at convenient targets, but most of us who've read the book know the truth. Be at peace.
The book was actually published in 2002. It is titled "Nine Minutes and 20 Seconds" which was the amount of time from the engine/prop blowing and the time the plane hit the ground.
The first song is "Now We Are Free" from The Gladiator Movie soundtrack. The second song is "Mad World" by Gary Jules. Both can be downloaded on Itunes.
The pilots on this flight were trapped in the cockpit after the crash. The cockpit door was blocked and unusable and the escape exits, DV windows, would not open. If that wasn't bad enough, the crash axe was used in an attempt to break a window and the axe handle broke after just a few strikes at the glass. The FO was pulled, badly burned from the aircraft, but the Captain died in the cockpit before they could get him out. Tragic.

i think they would have had a better chance if they would have cut out the other engine and used pitch to controll speed. that plane was a jack in the box because all surfaces need to go to the engine that is running. they had plenty of altitude to glide safely. you cannot land a twin prop with one engine ..
no flaps thats what killed the other prop plane recently with iceing. when the plane is flying dont change anything..45 degrees of flaps you better have the power to back it up...
...deddles makes a good point. The attitude of the airplane at impact is the cause of all the damage. By cutting power and decreasing lift on the right wing they might have been able to level it out. I watched a guy land a jet with one main gear still in the well...when the wing hit the ground it made a hell of a mess. He would have been better off bellying in.
I am a maintenence worker who works on all types of planes and we have been told loads thats chlorine can get inside the prop blades and in time they can fracture this is what happened here
To EeikSchimer1, i think it is , Now We are Free by Lisa Gerhard there are lots of videos on YT with this song as background just enter in search field.
The engine didn't just stop turning. The larger problem was that when it failed, it dislodged the engine assembly itself. In doing so, the wing was deformed and was no longer fully providing the lift it was designed to do. That's why it crashed after the engine failure. Had the engine simply halted, it is correct that the aircraft would likely have been able to continue on just fine on a single engine.
Some time back I read a multi-part story on this crash that was printed in the major Atlanta paper. One of the survivors told of a guy (who I think later died of his burns, but was walking around after the crash) who said to the guy "why aren't YOU burned?" Sorry the guy died, but he must've been a real jerk to say that. Studies always show that one should GET OUT of a burning plane as soon as possible without trying to help others, for the best results, i.e. least casualties.
Not only are all twin -engine *airliners* required to be able to fly safely on one engine, they are also required to be able to *take-off* on only one engine.
OMG write much . haha . i dont like little planes cuz they seem less safe . like if your in a bigger plane then maybe youd have somewhat of a chance ? unlike in a little plane . okay lets put it as driving a little volkswagon compared to a commodore . theres like mass difference . isnt there more turbulence in smaller aircraft anyways ? tar
i don't get it..! - why the hell it fall dawn if it has had second engine ok..??! - this plane must was totaly mistake if he coudin't fly in one engine.. - this construction shouldn't fly anyway...
It will only fly with the prop in feather. The engine was thrown sideways into the wing, effectively rendering the left wing useless and the airplane unflyable.
"Although the EMB 120 is designed to fly with one engine inoperative, the distortion of the engine resulted in excessive drag and loss of lift on the left side of the aircraft, causing it to rapidly lose altitude."
i saw a crash with the same cause, the Mt.Pinatubo that is Ramon Magsaysay's private plane, crashed on the foot of a mountain on Mindanao, because of the same unknown metal fatigue.
Fantastic video. I was a pilot for ASA when this occurred and personally knew one of the pilots and the FA. Watching this made the hair stand up on my neck. Great job!
how Exactly did the piotets die it didn't look like they would of died but i don't know i guess it was alot wors than it looks this has gotta be a rerun because there wasn't even people in the plane as passangers
I believe initially only the pilot on the left seat died from the crash. But about 15 or so passengers died from burn wounds some time after this event.
Its unfortunate that the captain never knew how much of a hero he is - a similear incedent occured i think, but everyone onboard was killed. the captainstill managed to save the lives of 19 people
evilsmiley, the other accident yur describing sounds exactly like alaska 261. lemme just say that the crew was highly experienced, there just wasnt a thing they, or any pilot in the world couldve done to recover that plane.
My first impressions were "a tribute!" it was too dramatic. I doubt any relative would want to see that, it would reopen the healed wound left by grievance. I myself felt sympathetic to know that this is am actual true story.
Jesus. They crash land, everyone survives, but HEY! Looks like the damn fire wants to join the party! Damn fire, without it I'm sure EVERYONE would have survived. Gannaway and Warmerdam, you are heroes nonetheless.

...deddles makes a good point. The attitude of the airplane at impact is the cause of all the damage. By cutting power and decreasing lift on the right wing they might have been able to level it out. I watched a guy land a jet with one main gear still in the well...when the wing hit the ground it made a hell of a mess. He would have been better off bellying in.
vachief 2 years ago
It wasn't a lost wing, BP. It was a prop failure.

I am a maintenence worker who works on all types of planes and we have been told loads thats chlorine can get inside the prop blades and in time they can fracture this is what happened here

It is amazing how much knowledge is built into today´s airplanes.
It is sad that so many people needed to die for us to fly safer.

flat belly crash was a good idea atleast people survied the crash instead of KABOOM!
rysliv 2 years ago
The engine didn't just stop turning. The larger problem was that when it failed, it dislodged the engine assembly itself. In doing so, the wing was deformed and was no longer fully providing the lift it was designed to do. That's why it crashed after the engine failure. Had the engine simply halted, it is correct that the aircraft would likely have been able to continue on just fine on a single engine.
captainboots 2 years ago
Some time back I read a multi-part story on this crash that was printed in the major Atlanta paper. One of the survivors told of a guy (who I think later died of his burns, but was walking around after the crash) who said to the guy "why aren't YOU burned?" Sorry the guy died, but he must've been a real jerk to say that. Studies always show that one should GET OUT of a burning plane as soon as possible without trying to help others, for the best results, i.e. least casualties.

Jerk?...you are a philistine tool...ever heard of shock?
mannhattan22 2 years ago
Not only are all twin -engine *airliners* required to be able to fly safely on one engine, they are also required to be able to *take-off* on only one engine.
bootsiebanty 2 years ago
OMG write much . haha . i dont like little planes cuz they seem less safe . like if your in a bigger plane then maybe youd have somewhat of a chance ? unlike in a little plane . okay lets put it as driving a little volkswagon compared to a commodore . theres like mass difference . isnt there more turbulence in smaller aircraft anyways ? tar

i dont like props . they are scary .
Imprezagtto 2 years ago
i don't get it..! - why the hell it fall dawn if it has had second engine ok..??! - this plane must was totaly mistake if he coudin't fly in one engine.. - this construction shouldn't fly anyway...
VictorSeedorsky 2 years ago
It will only fly with the prop in feather. The engine was thrown sideways into the wing, effectively rendering the left wing useless and the airplane unflyable.
NCpilot79 2 years ago

BeeGeesLover84 3 years ago
I believe initially only the pilot on the left seat died from the crash. But about 15 or so passengers died from burn wounds some time after this event.

was was going to say I don't even remember this but I wasn't born for another year so i was like oh thats just great!

Its unfortunate that the captain never knew how much of a hero he is - a similear incedent occured i think, but everyone onboard was killed. the captainstill managed to save the lives of 19 people

i thought twin engine planes like these were designed to be able to fly fine on a singe engine?
Jokerr6900 3 years ago
They are, the plane crashed because the wing was damaged when the prop blade broke.
smash29 3 years ago
Yes, That's if the engine just stops.
In this case the engine exploded and damaged the wing extremely badly.

The footage would have been a reconstuction of the crash. There wouldnt have been footage like that of the actual crash.
MrRocket2008 3 years ago
and yeah there has been a similar trouble like this but
#1 on the other aircraft the pilots weren't experienced
#2 it was a tail adjustment screw that came loose
#3 they plunged into the ocean and no survivors from the impact this many deaths included a baby as well R I P to all of these 2 flights.
evilsmileyproudns 3 years ago
evilsmiley, the other accident yur describing sounds exactly like alaska 261. lemme just say that the crew was highly experienced, there just wasnt a thing they, or any pilot in the world couldve done to recover that plane.
they werent even the same type of plane either
krispykreme82603 3 years ago
the song fitted i coulnt be on that flight i mean 10 mins knowin they where going to crash and just sitted there i would pass out

well its a pretty good film explaining it all etc, but a tribute?
if i wanted my lost relations to have a tribute made about them, i wouldn't ask for a film explaining exactly how they died.
good film anyways.
minigeff82 3 years ago 4
Minig., You are right.
My first impressions were "a tribute!" it was too dramatic. I doubt any relative would want to see that, it would reopen the healed wound left by grievance. I myself felt sympathetic to know that this is am actual true story.
