The packing is put in there to allow it to continue to drain as it heals. If you simply cover it up, the upper part of the skin would close over and provide a nice warm pocket for the infection to build up again and perhaps go even deeper as it looks to take the path of least resistance.

That is definitely a staph infection!! My mom had it and that is just what it looked like. They did that same procedure on her. Wash your hands people that stuff is deadly if not properly treated.

mrsa is becomming an epidemic in some places. 10 years ago they isolated people with this infection in hospitals and nursing homes. Now they don't and it has spread especially among tweekers. Everyone beware of staph!
