If you look at 1970 and -71 results you will be surprised to find out who was Nr.1! I would say that a small artist growing up at White City was the best ! Which could mean that this man was the Nr.1. player from lets say 59-65 and from 1970 -72! Laver wasnt the King before -65 according to my sources.
10 years! Interesting! Who has ever achieved that before or after? The name? The "little Master" himself Ken Rosewall !
Great list. Connors boycotted the French during his prime which probably cost him a true Grand Slam (in 74 he was unbeatable in GS play). There will never be another Jimmy Connors. Everyone can string a few great years together but Connors did it for almost 20 years. In the open era only Agassi comes close to this mark. Connors is definitely in the top 5 of all time.
@thedeckfamily Connors would not have won the french on that slow clay, especially when Borg owned the french. And the list above was for the seventies, not career.
@s37d Haha, got a point there, the only reason i didn't do that is because i have a separate video with the female list. So it's more to help differentiate the two.
Maybe was number 1 in 1975 but not Majors won & 1976 no roland garros no australia quarter wimbledon & victory at the Us Open . In 1977 Vilas won 16-17 tournaments 2 Majors 1 Final & still n.2 but that year Vilas or Borg they should be at n.1 & 78-79 was all Borg w/double french-wimbledon.
Between 1975 & 1978 won 2 Majors but was ranked number 1 for 4 consecutive years.
So Connors won 5 Mayors between 1974-79 & was ranked n1 for 5 years at n.1 Borg won 8 mayors between 1974-79 with the double paris-wimbledon 78-79 & was ranked n.1 only in 1979.
From 1975 to 1979 Borg won 7 Majors & Connors won 2 Majors.
I don't think the atp ranking was working very good at that time.
Being a H-U-G-E Connors fan this is amazing! To say the least! If Connors was better than Borg, why was I always crying in my beer at the end of nearly every game I watch between the two (which was all of them)? So, according to my "tear" factor, Borg busted Jimmy too many times to allow me to agree with your assessment... I surely wish I could though because I loved Jimbo!
great list but i think you definitely have top 2 wrong way round.If we are looking exclusively just at the 70's connors only won5 grand slams during that decade and borg won 8 ,if we are looking at their h2h during 70's borg had edge as well especially during years 77-79 when both were at their prime in terms of age .I remember borg owned jimmy for that period winning about 12 of their 14 matches then.
Assuming Ken Rosewall was past his best by Jan. 1, 1970 and that John McEnroe had not yet peaked by Dec. 31, 1979, we can exclude them. Assuming Rod Laver was still in his prime as of Jan. 1, 1970, I make it like this: 1-Bjorn Borg 2-Rocket Rod Laver 3-Jimmy Connors 4-John Newcombe 5-Guilermo Vilas 6-Arthur Ashe 7-Stan Smith 8-Illie Nastase 9-Jan Kodes 10-Vitas Gerulaitas
laver was better during the 60s......also rosewall, you're right about that.........the difference btetween them is that rosewall reached slam final during the 70s and won some of them...........laver dind't do it during the 70s.....
@RetroTennis Gonna have to agree. On the basis of winning Grand Slams, no question. I understand this dude has his way of calculating which includes QF and SF results, but I don't see it.
Plus, WTF are Gerulaitis and Kodes doing in there? Kodes won that Wimbledon the year everyone boycotted. I don't know . . .
Think about all the players Connors had to compete against at their peaks: in the '70s, against John Newcombe (five career Grand Slam titles), Guillermo Vilas (four GS titles) and Roscoe Tanner (one title); in the late '70s and early '80s, Borg and McEnroe; in the '80s, Lendl, Edberg, Wilander and Becker. Connors managed to win 8 slams against that competition, just phenomenal.
Here's one stat that says something about Connors: From 1973 Wimbledon through the 1985 U.S. Open, he played in 35 majors and reached the quarterfinals in 34 of them (and the semifinals in 28 of them). The guy always came to play, and he was among the best in the world for 15 years
His amazing run of excellence and durability, including being ranked in the top three in the world for 12 consecutive years and reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Open at age 39;
B. He has won more Grand Slam matches (233) than anybody else despite competing in the Australian Open only twice;
C. Although he never won the French Open, he did win the U.S. Open in 1976 when it was held on clay;
D. He beat great players such as Borg, McEnroe and Lendl in finals; and WON 109 tournaments.
Great list. Agree completely. So many incredible players with a broad diversity of styles. Thanks for the reminder! And I get your calculations. On that basis, where would the great Adriano Panatta rank?
Seriously I didn't cheat but mine was almost the same. I put Borg #1 because a possible GOAT, better than Connors and he must be best in one decade and it cant be the 80s. But I know Connors sepnt more time as #1 ATP than Borg.
@Bonkatsu12 "While Borg only made two finals and one semi." You need to recalculate, dude. Borg made 4 wimbledon finals and at least 5 french finals. That's 9 finals--and Borg won all nine of them. I believe Borg had a better head to head record against Connors, too.
borg should be no.1. Why? 'cause he's borg!!!

non sono daccordo il primo è Bjorn Borg, e basta.

Je ne suis pas d'accord, Borg était le meilleur, il a révolutionné le jeu et, de plus, il manque panata
Roosewall est plutot un joueur des années 60

Shouldn't this vid be titled "Top Ten Tennis Players of the 1970's", without "Men" in the title, seeing as how men are superior?

what about roscoe tanner? was he worse than jan kodes??? tom okker, the dutch, was also a good player of the seventies.....

Well Jan Kodes won 1970-71 French Opens and 1973 Wimbledon so i don't see a reason to consider him inferior to Tanner.

But that's because he barely played any GS after 1969.
He was still the best player in the world until probably 1973.

Borg is the 3rd greatest men's tennis player of all time, and most of that was in the 1970s. He won more French Open titles than Connors won Slams.
Borg ranks behind Sampras and Federer s the greatest of all time, and Connors is much lower down the list.
