I love these reviews, but I gotta say, buying one tablet, the Thrive is much more expandable without buying accessories like the pricey keyboard with ports. She talks about the data transfer on the thrive, saying they should have gone with micro USB, I have so many Mini USB cables sitting around, they are more abundant than the micro. With that being said, I love these reviews. Keep them coming! :)
@SassyLex18 My TF 101 has been serving me well this couple of months. Of course no tablet is perfect, it has it's flaws. But for the price that I paid for including the dock, I could say, it is worth the investment. The flexibility of it being both a tablet and a notebook is for me. the best of both worlds. But I would also look at the upcoming Asus Prime. That looks interesting too. Good luck.
@MobileTechReview . If the Asus change the battery, will you be concerened about the labor plus the battery? You do not need to worry about the replacement of the battery bcause you can do it. However, I noticed the Toshiba can output only 720 HD to the HD TV by the HDMI cable. The picture on the HD TV is not good. How about the Transformer picture on the connected HD TV by the HDMI cable? Have you tested it?
Lady <3 could you please tell me which one should I get Tomorrow !! PLEASE tell me. best buy is gonna have a Good offer for black Friday .. Please. Idk what to get.
@aleckz44 It depends on what you need and want from a tablet. We have detailed reviews of both on MobileTechReview as well as several videos on YouTube. Check them out. Hopefully they will help you decide.
@warkilla, it's the Toshiba dock that goes for $50/$60 depending where you buy it. There's two. One is just an audio out ( a little cheaper), but the one I was referring to is the one that has all the ports on the back, HDMI, USB's, audio..... Google Toshiba Thrive dock.
Hi lisa, I'm so impress with the way you do your reviews. And your review of the eee pad transformer made me choose that tablet. The Thrive seems to have a lot of potential to be a great tablet too. I just subscribe to your channel and I'm looking forward to your future reviews. More power to you and Mobiletechreview. Btw, I'm from the Philippines.
Which one do you think is better? I really want the asus eee pad really bad but it looks like I might get the Thrive for Christmas because my parents found a good deal at Aarons. Is there much of a difference between the two?
@dylanfleck The Thrive really has quite a bit more weight to it compared to the Asus Transformer, but in exchange you do get all them ports with the Thrive. If not having a keyboard isn't that big of a deal for you the Thrive could do you fine at a lower price. Generally their sort of the same.
However if you live in Australia or New Zeland don't get the Thrive... no matter what.
And also the Thrive has a docking station that essentially turns it into a desktop. Hook up a mouse, a keyboard. Good as a gold. Hdmi port on it audio out jack on it. Gold!
You can sync your phones just to the Thrive. All Android chargers are micro to full usb cords as well. No problems there. That's what the full usb slot is for.
@juanoekmexico Yeah but the toshibas screen isnt as nice as the transformer, and the transformer has a keyboard dock, a mini hdmi to hdmi adapter is like 5-6 euro
Asus is google powered...just get a google keyboard. It works my dad did it. He paid $60 for the keyboard. Im gonna go for the toshiba. Its the full size usb I dig...easier to upload pics directly from my cam. $20 cheaper at walmart as well.
@vupadown also toshiba has it's own battery replacement, whereas other tablet PCs needs to sent it (Asus doesn't support battery replacement) so once it's out of battery you have to throw the tablet away
There is " NO" comparison with "The Toshiba Thrive".... because we can easily buy the Amazon's non-branded 10" Chinese USB- keyboard Tablet-Case for the Apad/Epad. the Case cost under $20 and another extended battery for $70....LOL. that is light weight...Who want to carry that Asus Keyboard dock cost over $150.and weighted more than the 12" lappy. (3.6 pds.|
it's funny how nobody seams to say anything about the Toshiba Thrive's sdXc card reader can you say 64gb or 128gb sdxc card no other tablet can do that just the Trive...
@4EVRTRB ..Well that because The Android 3.0/3.1 OS acting just the the old Android 2.0/2.1 OS with the SD card... We can not Move Apps to the SD cards...( Just waiting for Android 3.2 ) and that 128gb SDXC=ex-fat..
I returned the Asus Transformer and get the The Toshiba Thrive 16 gb for $500.with a Chinese Import USB tablet keyboard case, plus another Thrive Battery...LOL The Asus Docking Keyboard is over-priced.
@waal why do you want to add more weight with that big roll up magazine style Keyboard?. ...there is a USB keyboard case that is lighter than the Toshiba case
@MobileTechReview my dad really wants one of these tablets. I want to get one for him for his birthday so would you sell the Asus one for a good deal?
@TehkNinja go to bestbuy there the lowest priced tablets there and they offer a warranty for 169 that covers accidental so if u drop it spill something on it your covered just take it back and they give you a brand new on for no extra cost and its a 2 year warranty
Lisa you have absolutely the best reviews on the internet hands down. I still check out the blogs and sites for news and info but if i REALLY want i review you're my one stop shop. Happy subscriber!
The only thing the Thrive has going for it out of the box is the built in USB. But, the transformer with the dock and USB blows the thrive out the water. Without the Asus dock the Thrive wins. Sometimes I want a USB without adding a dock. But I would rather have the best of both worlds and have the ability to type on a keyboard as well. Asus wins.
Are the file managers on these 2 devices, or tablets in general, the only ones you can ever use on the device or can you download better ones from the android market ?
I immensely enjoy your reviews. They are so through and really give a true analysis of the product. I was on the fence between the two tablets. The Asus is for me though. Thanks again for your help.
I've had both. Exchanged the Thrive for the Transformer because I needed a keyboard dock, not a separate keyboard but an actual dock. I actually preferred the feel of the Thrive to the TF. Both are nice I just liked the thickness of the Thrive
I watched the whole review, I am completely new to android devices, and right now a major retailer has the asus for about 75 dollars cheaper than the toshiba. If I got the asus I would not get the keyboard dock, I am on a serious budget and was just wondering would I enjoy the asus as much, I have had bad experiences with asus netbook's running very slowly. can I expect this from the transformer or would I just be paying to much for the toshiba brand?
@aufan70 Be sure to check out our separate video reviews of both devices, and we have full written reviews of both on MobileTechReview web site. There is ton of info to help you decide.
After doing some hard comparing, it looks like (for me) the Transformer *barely* edges out the Thrive. For $30 less than the 8GB Thrive, you can get a 16GB Asus with full Office Document software out of the box with a bit more battery life and in a thinner chassis. The Thrive isn't bad at all (The full USB, full size SD card and removable battery are nice!), but the Transformer has more potential with the dock later on, and a cheaper start out price
I have the THRiVE and love it. Have not had any issues at all with it. the power sleep issue hasn't happened to me and have used it every day. Love the full size ports on this thing.
There is an update to this story. Unfortunately there are a lot of reports on the Internet that the Thrive has a problem with it. It seems to switch itself off. I am sorry to hear this because I was going to buy one. Now I will wait and hope its only a software glitch. If its hardware well then it would have to be recalled. This reminds me of the situation with the Nokia N8 when it first come out. I bought mine and had no problems still dont but a certain proportion were defective.
While deciding between the two, I note that most of the negative comments on the purchase sites mention that "the corners of the Transformer leak light - which is annoying." Have others experienced this behavior?
So I went to my local best buy today and compared both and I have to say the screen on the transformer is clearly better and I gotta say the back of the thrive feels cheap like when you grip on it hard you can feel the back plate bend which I kinda didn't like but not a huge deal to me but I gotta say I am going to stick with my tranformer no doubt and considering I got the 32GB model for $475 with an 8gb sd card free shipping and a pair of klipsche headphones all new.
thanks alot for the video, the comparison videos are great when trying to decide on a product. maybe at some point you could do a video comparing all the current honeycomb tablets.
@ChrisJ2F It's Android... not Windows. Unless there's an Android version of the game, it won't play on an Android device. At no point did anyone say that it magically turned into an XBOX
@neothespian Well... Sorry for being new to The Android Market. By the way.. saying "At no point did anyone say that it magically turned into an XBOX" - I asked for Halo CE.... Halo CE isn't on XBOX, So don't try and be Sarcastic about something you don't know about.
As a person who actually owns the Transformer and has had it for a while now, I can personally guarantee that you will NOT regret buying it. It gets the job done in every way possible while being affordable. its fast, great screen, android, and thin with good battery life
@timothyln12 xoom sucks, transformer is much better than it. i have personally tried out the xoom and it is thick and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too choppy
@timothyln12 Don't get the Xoom. I had the Wi-Fi version and Verzion 4G LTE version and I had to send them both back twice each. In my opinion, I would get the Transformer or the Acer Iconia Tab A500. I now have the Acer and its just as good as the Asus.
I'm actually trying to figure out which one should I get before I go to college. Both those tablets are phenomenal when it comes to expanding storage and connectivity options. I think the biggest deciding factor for me is availability because I heard that the transformer becomes "out of stock" quickly due to high demand for the product. Because of that, I will have to go with the Toshiba Thrive but at least it as Android 3.1 installed.
@equandre1 The Thrive is no thicker than a Macbook Air closed. I think people are so obsessed with thinness they forget there gets to be a point where some thing is just too thin to actually handle. You need to be able to hold onto SOMETHING with a handheld device. There needs to be some substance there. A half inch is NOT a huge thickness

@neothespian True but thats a crappy LAPTOP I don't think a tablet should be the same thickness of a closed laptop.
