  • 4:08 HAHA! he LEPT in the AIR! what a GREAT conductor!

  • So this was my reaction for Community coming back on air.

  • Vangelis to Beethoven? Simple music for simple minds...

  • Five stars. Placido was really young there. I guess that was in the early 70's.

  • Does anybody else hate when other interpretations of this symphony play the Prestissimo finale rather slowly? It takes all of the excitement of that finale away

  • I almost cried no joke , this symphony is too good way to good to be considered benevolent

  • 4:11 the angels have a last thing to pronounce... i used to cry at that part. i actually cry now. i am not gay.

  • Music of a Genius...

    youtube.com/watch?v=EmV35VPRT9s

  • This music is PERFORMANCE art....written to bring out the TALENT of all involved.

I prefer music that is written SIMPLY. It does not impress me that so MANY notes

are incorporated. Please listen to Vangelis's "Titans" from the movie, "Alexander".

He uses few notes but they cause one's spirit to SOAR. I choose Vangelis.

  • @axcrewe im sorry did you just compare Vangelis to Bethoven...

  • Fantastic!

  • The singular thing about Bernstein was his absolute respect and faith in the professionalism of his cast, so to speak. NO other conductor that I have ever known has, during a performance, become as one with the performers and the sheer momentum of a piece. He is the only conductor I have ever seen who has been so sure of his "crowd" that he would stop during some especially moving portion of music, put his baton down in his hand, and just stand there listening to the perfection surround him.

  • complete version of the 9th symphony...

    youtube.com/watch?v=EmV35VPRT9s

  • Any musicians of today need to bow down to this composer- without people like him, we wouldnt have HALF of what we listen to today :). not to mention he continued to play and compose long after he became completely deaf- you can't get much more musically talented than that- writing world epic masterpieces without the ability to hear. just a shame not everyone appreciates that today due to mediocre blindness :(

  • I think every genre has stuff to offer and is not superior to the other, To say otherwise is ignorance and bigotness. Every genre succedes in the same thing

  • 49 poor souls have no ears...

  • thank you ernestalba for sharing this marvellous video! everytime i hear this i give thanks that i am blessed with the ability to hear!

  • Uploaded by ernestalba on Apr 21, 2007

Leonard Bernstein conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Beethoven's Ode to Joy. This is the final part of the piece, which contains the incredible Prestissimo Finale.

This portion of the movement begins with the contrapuntal union of the Ode to Joy and the Church Theme from the previous clip by the full chorus.

  • the video sound is waayyy too low

  • Love it!

New (to me) versions of this superb gem never cease to amaze me.

Who are the soloists? Gwendolyn Jones Soprano, maybe?

  • @vmcla I think the tenor is Placido Domingo

  • @balletfanRGA I agree.

  • Wow, ernestalba, thanks so much for putting this up. What a joy to see Leonard Bernstein conducting this masterpiece.

  • Surreal!!!

  • I don't get what there is to dislike...

  • 48 people are Bieber fans who can't speak Deutsch.

  • Beethoven conducted by Leonard Bernstein. Simply amazing.

  • Schiller + Beethoven: World's Finest

  • The greatest music ever written. This is what evolution of consciousness sounds like. Imagine what this must have done to people hearing it for the first time. There were no records or ipods. No youtube. NOTHING on Earth could have prepared them for this! People travelled for days to hear a symphony. It was a spiritual pilgrimage for many. This must have sent them away Enlightened and in pure awe. And to think..... a DEAF MAN wrote it! ANYTHING is possible!

  • @mindstormsabrewin And now we can listen in our own homes. Good no?

  • @mmadonna62341 Not just good. Miraculous! I am very honored and privileged to be alive in this time when at the touch of your fingers you can access some of the greatest art and ideas from human history. Even though things are messed up on this planet and some people seem intent on making things as bad as possible, we are really in an incredible world. I just hope the good guys can save the day! This music really shows just what one inspired person can achieve.

  • @mindstormsabrewin YEAH! i feel teh same wayz about pr0nZ!!! :D

  • Woah, Domingo, Talvela, Verette.. that's one hell of a soloist panel

  • Bernstein understands this music better than anyone else I have ever heard. It's also probably the second hardest piece of standard repertoire to conduct (the first hardest being the Fifth Symphony) because it has been done to death by so many conductors' that it takes a true genius like Leonard Bernstein to make it fresh and new again.

  • In this performance Bernstein reveals to us the completely optimistic heart of the aged Beethoven..

  • As to the following.

    No. I'm for real.

Every imaginable layer of reason to not trust.

Every imaginable layer of reason to question the theology or science.

    Check it out.

I have absolutely nothing to hide. I'm connected to every belief and

ever clinging to the most skeptical, dead-serious, experimental science.

I do have one goal. My wife again.

  • Brother, if you are curious to all things everything you most definitely want to invest 50 seconds at my profile. 1st girlfriend: astrology now: have to have my soul mate proving simultaneous science history morality conveyed message SURPRISE! how to travel to the stars. no one gives up a shred of anything. personally previously more insulted, disdainful, put off than any of you How about all manner of probabilities/relativity; also, data gravitational; key to emergence AND survival?
  • @LetItBeFormerlyX

what are you saying? are you a lunatic? stop speaking all alone and get a like (or wife) whatever.

  • Was totalltyamazed, when I read Beethoven's biography, to learn that he was almost totally deaf when he composed this work. At the first performance, he led the orchestra through the entire peace. When it ended, a band member had to approach him, to turn him around, to see that the audience was giving him a roaring ovation! Outstanding!

  • Stanley, stanley...

    !

  • I really want to know how Beethoven did it. His 9th is far better than anything he did previously, combined. Most people don't realize how lucky we are that he created this. If an alien race came to Earth, curious about our culture, the first thing I think we would need to show them is Beethoven's 9th-- they would be impressed. But more realistically, his 9th, in my opinion, would be perfect for defeating tyranny, because it inspires so much deep freedom, love and joy when you listen to it.

  • Thank you ernestalba. I had heard a recording of this performance (I think my parents had it on an album) but have never seen it. Seeing the performance, especially those great soloists makes all the difference. It was wonderful to watch.

  • Elvis is the King

  • MÁXIMO

  • FABULOSO

  • Haven't you seen the epic rap battle between Bieber and Beethoven? It's on Youtube - and Beethoven kicked Bieber's ass - so is there is some hope for the younger generation! Some kid on the site said he liked Beethoven bc he's metal... to me, he's metal, water, earth, and fire.

  • This is one of the finest pieces of music ever created.

  • "This piece is spiritually satisfying. I feel the flow of moral advancement, I feel the flow of attention challenge, and I also pungently feel the push for glory and justification. This song is a biologically and spiritually good song. Well conducted, Leonard. Props"

This comment is spiritually unsatisfying. I feel the flow of bile advancing, I feel the flow nausea challenge, and pungently feel the push for glory as I head to the can for justification. How can a son be biologically good?

  • When listening to this music one can finally start to grasp the potential our family of nations could reach when Europe is finally politically united as one. Long live the Union!

  • Music like this just elevates your soul into a vast heaven of bliss.

  • Jak se říká: komu se to nelíbí, ať nám píp políbí. Beethoven je prostě úžasný, jako i jiní skladatelé, jako Bach, Mysliveček, Mozart a jiní.

  • Even if I tell my eyes not to tear up at 3:27, they somehow end up doing it anyway.

  • Nooooo shinji! You can run away! Dont kill kaworu!

  • from 4:13... totally wrong, their timing is horrible. Singing sounds supposed to mix in harmony not like this.

  • If you can note, the tenor is a very young Placido Domingo. Nice performance of the great finale of one of greatest symphonies created

  • esta version es muy buena, pero a mi me gusta más la de karajan.

  • chuck norris actually composed this, Beethoven just stole it from him

  • @TeaInTralfamadore And Chuck Norris did nothing? lol. Beethoven is one scary guy then

  • @TeaInTralfamadore

the Chuck Norris jokes are so 2001...they're are so worn out

  • @TeaInTralfamadore

go fuck yourself. This joke just became tasteless as soon as it went towards Beethoven.

  • @Quentinsama Can we,please, control out respective potty-mouthes?? lol

  • mj and beethoven are the best!

  • I am not a critic. I hear what I hear. I don't think the voices do the music justice. That means I would rather hear instruments only on this piece.

  • the trance of its day huh?

  • the 42 people who disliked this had a sore throat so there just jealous

  • Best composition ever written, by the greatest composer who ever lived, and conducted by the greatest conductor of the 20th century. It doesn't get any better than this.

  • @Russebby your comment IS PERFECT!!!!

  • 6:36 Wind Section FTW!!!

  • @amrhima in a way that is correct, but what kind of person likes to go around and say music like this is bad and annoy people? And annoying genius? Oh well , just as there are all types of musicians, there must be all types of geniuses.

  • @cnmaster01 yes, I believe I know what you mean. A week after I wrote the comment, I saw the movie Amadeus Mozart for my orchestra class and I was shocked seeing his behaviour throughout the film.

  • @AltoNicoRuso I believe a genius is just someone who has an extraordinary talent, doesn't imply any modesty or politeness.

  • @AltoNicoRuso So tired saying this: The film "Amadeus" is just fiction, Mozart did NOT act like that, he was, in fact, taught to act well and to act professionally by his father, and he and Salieri were, in fact, good friends. If anyone, it was Mozart who felt a bit antagonistically towards Salieri and not the other way around. While he was not exactly a modest man, he was nothing like the portrayal in the film.

  • @sopralto817 sorry for tiring you out :P

Thank you for telling me this.

  • @AltoNicoRuso It's OK.

Though for the record, Mozart still did have a very scatological sense of humor, I've got a collection of his letters translated, and it's... kind of impressive. But those are just letters.

  • @BJZnRPZ a genius seems to be the last thing you are, sorry. A genius is modest and never tells other that he or she is a genius. A genius does not use foul language. By reading this, I hope you have now received some enlightenment. Good day to you, sir.

  • @AltoNicoRuso don't know the context, but tell that to Mozart xD

  • @Chrisjust66 he's just an ignorant fellow who expresses his opinion in some small hope that he will be noticed. Just as a saying goes, the few are good, the bad is everywhere. This goes for people and music alike.

  • beautiful!!!

  • hhjj

  • @carlosvelazquez30 You must have a bunch of mirrors around you or something.

  • What is this how did I get here

  • The alto line is quiet :(

  • Ggdyn

  • This piece is spiritually satisfying. I feel the flow of moral advancement, I feel the flow of attention challenge, and I also pungently feel the push for glory and justification. This song is a biologically and spiritually good song. Well conducted, Leonard. Props

  • @kingjohnkk composed by a drunken old deff man.lol

  • 34 people have NO tatse

  • 26 people here do not have souls!

  • BEST MUSIC IN THE HISTORY OF THE HUMANKIND.

  • @guzrules1 totally concur - lifts my soul and wipes the cynicism from my mind, leaving a serenity so pleasant it hurts

  • Those 26 dislikes must be from Karajan fans.

  • @Dodo251 ... probably ;o) ... but we prefere Bernstein, right? So ... who cares, eh?

  • @mmbmbmbmb Precisely.

  • @Dodo251 Nice one! brought a wee smile to ma face. and just wondering how many people in passing wont get that comment! have cool cool days!

  • @kabeauregardajax haha thanks, I'm glad you liked it! Have a nice life!

  • @Dodo251 I am a big Karajan fan but this was excellent too. it is possible to like both ;)

  • @Dodo251 Hey, I'm a Furtwangler fan! Seriously though, of course I didn't vote it down, no conductor could fail to get some beauty out of this beautiful piece, but I didn't think it was out of the ordinary as far as Ninths go either.

  • @Dodo251 what about Furtwangler´s :P

  • @Dodo251 Or possibly those dislikes are from people who realize that the inferior sound quality of 240p can in no way do justice to this magnificent music...

  • @davehshs Could be.

  • @Dodo251 y??

  • @Dodo251: Or Furtwaengler.. ;)

I so much like Leny's interviews on Beethoven symphonies.. does anybody know where to get it from?

  • @Dodo251 *lol* thats a good one!

  • @Dodo251
