@sprite4asia clarinet is one of the better sounding instruments but way too many people play it and there's LOTS of competition. and if you are looking to get a nice clarinet they are very expensive (i play this). saxophone is nice but its also used quite a bit. the oboe is very expensive and each band should only have 1 or 2.. check around if your band has one or not. i dont really like it personally. the piccolo is just a smaller flute and it is alot harder to play. i recommend the flute first

I play both, and both are fun if you work and become good at it. However, an entry level professional flute can cost anywhere between $2000 for some Asian-made instruments to $10000...and that's just silver instruments. Pro clarinets are $1500 for Asian to $5000 for the most expensive. That extra money will buy a lot of reeds! And some clarinet music calls for that same high C. It takes a good player to make it sound good, though.

@cutedivaprincess I'll agree with Brent - while both are fun, flutes cost more up front - the most expensive flute I'm tried out was $66K, and many are regularly $20K and above. I'm pretty sure clarinets don't usually cost that much since the top model clarinet is about $5000. Like Brent, I also play both :)

@pizzahut97: If there is one thing i emphasize to all my students over anything else, it is the "s" word...support. Breathe deep, from the bottom of your lungs, and use those abdominal muscles to support the air column. That is what will help most to give you a big full sound--otherwise some folks tend to pinch their embouchure to compensate, and that kills the sound.

Articulation comes with consistent repetition. Practice, practice, practice--and use a metronome!

@aapch1: As i tell my students, It's not that you can't get the notes, it's just that you haven't got them yet. So much of playing well is repetition and smart practice. Think about the things you couldn't do last year that you can do this year. The improvements sometimes seem to come slowly, but they do come and next year you'll wonder why you found it so hard.
