I think of the great Alan Dawson on a regular and frequent basis, too. He was a master drummer, teacher, and wonderfully gentle man. I miss him terribly. Berklee in the early 60s was really something, and he was one of the prime reasons it was so special for drummers (and others) such as me. This clip doesn't display nearly as much of his genius as others on YouTube, but I'll take it. ;-)
great to see that there is a video of this concert, which is the Dave Brubeck trio & Gerry Mulligan Live at the Berlin Philmarmonie. Does anyone know if a video or DVD of this concert is available? I am particularly interested in the performance of "New Orleans" (by Hoagy Carmichael) at this concert. Many thanks to Astrotype for posting this.
Imagine my good fortune to spend anywhere from 30-90 (or more) with Alan Dawson ONCE a WEEK for 2 years in the early 70's at Berklee in Boston. Now, 35+ years later I still think about this great man everyday and all the things he taught me about drums and music. My students learn the things he taught me. RIP Alan...you will live forever in all the things you gave so many of us in your knowledge and wisdom.
I'm with you on that. I studied with him at his house late 70's - early 80's. I still practice all his stuff today and spread it to my students. He was a rare breed of GREAT teacher AND Great Player..
From 1:26-1:50, Mulligan is quoting "Squeeze Me (But Please Don't Tease Me)" which Ray Nance sang with the Ellington band. (Youtube has him doing it. Just search Ray Nance).
"Squeeze me" isn't even a 12-bar, but Mulligan makes part of it work as one here. Cool!
Wow, there's a video of this album?? Fantastic. This is on CD as Dave Brubeck Trio & Gerry Mulligan Live at the Berlin Philharmonie. Brubeck's solo is about as crazy as he ever got. This group is so hot, they give the Classic Quartet a run for their money sometimes.
Great...!!!

I like this group -- nice to hear the bari with Dave instead of the alto... a little different.

Neat how Dave went from being so clean-cut just 5 years earlier to this. His playing is as eclectic as ever.

is it just me or do dave and buddy rich seem somwhat alike in their older age?

I can't see it...
Talk about Buddy Rich, I was just discussing how Gene Krupa (in his old days) looked like the current Martin Scorsese. Off-topic, I know.
:P
Thank you to AstroType for this great video.

Show de Bola. Eu fico arrepiado ao ouvir estes FERAS do Jazz. Brubeck e Mulligan é tudo de bom.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Brubeck's feel is so stiff - I never get why people rate him so highly.

Awesome! I agree, this was a great group. The pinacle is this group joined by Paul Desmond. It didn't get any better than that.
