I've always admired your Sabbath lessons. They are the cleanest and most comprehensive on youtube, by far.
I'm planning on recording a full song lesson for NIB, including the solos. But the only difference is that I'll be covering the Primus and Ozzy version instead of the original, which varies slightly in its lead parts. For those looking to stick to the original leads, I wanted to direct them via link to your video if thats OK with you. Let me know if you object : )
Do you have a website for the full tab to this song instead of just the solo? Every tab i play for the ryhtym sections and then try to use this solo it sounds out of key.Either way thanks for this vid and tab link.I know your solo is correct but all the other tabs ive found for this song show it at the 7th fret on the d string.Id like to find a correct version of the full song.
Do you have a website for the full tab to this song instead of just the solo? Every tab i play for the ryhtym sections and then try to use this solo it sounds out of key.Either way thanks for this vid and tab link.
Thank you very much. A lot of guitar lessons on here are a little too rushed, but you take it one lick at a time and make it easy to understand. I'll make sure to remember you if there's any other Sabbath tunes I get stuck on.
From 00:50 to 00:53 you do the 15, 12, 12, 15 sixteenth notes and your first finger stays always on E and B string on 12 - how u do it that if you play e string, b string and than again e string that only one string is hearable?
@warismoney whoah - good question; one I had to pick up my guitar in order to answer because I couldn't have told you otherwise. I up-pick the 15th fret on the E-string. When I do, the skin of my thumb barely brushes the B string, killing it. When I down-pick the 12th fret of the B string, the skin of my first finger (right below the nail) barely brushes the E-string, killing it. It's subtle but it works reliably. I realize now I've been doing it unconsciously.
@doctornerve Thank you very much! I will practice that technique today, its all about killing the other string with the hand you grab the notes, i think this will need some time to get perfect, but its usefull in a few different situations! Thanks for your fast reply!
thank you so much for posting that...every body else had the solo wrong and my band is coverin this.....i was listening to the song and i could tell that the solo i was lookin at was wrong...but you hit it spot on thanks again
@13RGaun You are very welcome. It's a deceptively tricky solo - the phrasing is very special and it's tempting to play it merely 'sort of right'. So I am glad you are going to nail it!
You must be pumped to be in a band that covers early Sabbath. Rock on
I had no clue P90 pickups could do such a thick sound like that, I always thought since they were single coil they would have a weaker sound. That SG did a great job replicating the sound of Tony's guitar. Is the guitar itself mostly responsible for that tone or is it more your amp and recording software?
The reason I would like to know is that those SG's are considerably cheaper than the Humbucker equipped SG's around here, and I'm wondering if the P90 equipped ones will sound just as good
@MrMoustaffa For the first 10 years of Sabbath, Tony had P-90 in the bridge position and a John Birch Superflux in the neck position. The P90 has a fat mean sound with the high end you'd expect from a single coil. Not the best match for a modern high gain amp, though.
The tone is a complex mix of the wood, the pickup, the box, and the amp. I did not do any post-production on the recording.
You might check out P-Rails by Seymour Duncan which combine a strat, humbucker, and P90 in one pickup
@doctornerve thats actually what I'm looking for. I play mostly hard rock and early metal (like Sabbath and the sort). I'm a rythm guitarist in my band so a fat heavy sound is exactly the sort of thing I need. I play with relatively low gain (for metal) on older amps, so I imagine it would match up well with my sound.
I've seen a guitar much like yours for $800 in a local guitar shop, and after hearing this will deffinitely be trying it out soon. I need a good gibson anyways
@CurtisAlfeld true story about the pen nib (and typical of the humor in that band), but both Ozzy and later Ronnie would introduce the tune in concert by spelling out the letters.
you should cover war pigs. the LUKES WALL solo!!!!!! that would be great. please do that. YOU ARE THE ULTIMATE SABBATH COVER/LESSON GUITARIST ON YOUTUBE!!!!!!!
This all makes me go back to a Magical Time..........Yeap as a little kid and playing through a fendertube and seeing people "Just Line my front yard " and hearing me a little a kid play this !! @cleytonmetal92 Thanks! Yes I'd like to put up new lessons soon, but am very busy right now. You can get Doctor Nerve CD's off iTunes Music Store or Amazon. Rock on and thanks for your support!
Ha, thanks. I am chuckling at the 'almost too well' part. No worries I got my own bands going, my own direction. My hope is people will get inside these solos and absorb whatever they found inspiring about them into their own thing.
great stuff man, you should do some sabbath lessons from their more underrated albums like sabotage, technical ecstasy, and never say die! Keep up the great videos!!!!

I have not heard your particular amp model, but the Laney GC60A sounds like it can give you a really clean signal that would welcome pedals. Couple boxes you might want to check include the MXR M-116 FullBore Metal or the older (and less over-the-top) Krank Distortus Maximus. I'd give the MXR a try, and in general, use less gain than one might think, to get the warm chunky vintage Iommi tone.
Great video! really easy to fallow and gd explaining! Altough it´s not quite the way Tony plays it he start of at the 5th fret on the G-string but your way is a bit easier in my opinion. Would be really nice to see u post the "Neon Knights" solo which is the best solo in the history of metal :P
Thanks! And yes you're right about the position. Playing it higher up the neck on thicker strings gets you more chunk, lower on the neck on thinner strings gets more cut. Select to taste!

I figured it fit in with the rest of your lessons. The verse and chorus are fairly easy for beginners, it's not too long and the solo seems pretty straightforward.
Most importantly -- it rocks! =-)
