@JerseyShore117 I included that tag because the footage was shot at 1080p and I wanted to ensure anyone interested in licensing it knew that it was available in that format... and, if someone searched using that criteria this clip would hopefully be returned somewhere in their results.
@JerseyShore117 Yeah, although that wasn't dust... it was a dense precipitation core of large (>4-inch) hail and very heavy rain. If we had stayed at the location we were at, towards the end of the video, we probably would have taken some significant hail damage to the car.
This is a awsome storm, Kinda reminded me of the storm we had in winthrop harbor Illionois Omg i was babysitting a 3 year old when all of a sudden my mom called screaming GET IN THE BASMENT RIGHT NOW A TORNADO HAS TOUCHED DOWN NEAR YOU GUYS so i ran in the basment with meg the 3 year old with her tom and jerry little TVand we waiting the clouds where black after 15 minutes my mom told us to go back upstairs the storm was gone but nearby a tree was nocked over everything was in ruins i wasluck
A micro burst happened today 6/22in Tuscaloosa right where the tornado came through. I know because it picked the sand and dirt at the cedar crest area and it was intense, my truck ways swaying
So none of these became tornadic? Because the first and last looked like they had quite a bit of rotation! Especially with that awesome looking overshooting updraft at 1:19! Good catch guys!
That curtain of hail reminds me of the videos of the thunderstorm (bearing low-level tornadoes) which hit New York City in Sept. 2010. Both storms moved amazingly fast, and (as you hear in this video) both looked very "ominous". The difference was that the New York storm moved over a city of millions of people, instead of being out on the plains like this one.
I have done the same thing in Oklahoma. Hail like that would be a nasty situation, especially when the wind is giving it an extra boost of speed. I got hit by a couple of 2.5 inch hailstones, but they didn't break the glass, I turned around and got out of it. The storm was still growing and had not formed the anvil yet. It eventually would spawn a huge tornado, but the road I was on messed me up so I didn't get to see the tornado. I should have set up further east.
it looks tempting to get into the hail core. however, it is not worth the risk of vehicle damage from hail ranging from the size of quarters to the size of a softball from a rotating thunderstorm. a good storm chaser never goes into the hail core intentionally.
Sometimes I like to just shoot photography and video of the storm structure from a distance. I have always wanted to shoot an LP Supercell. Hopefully I'll get to the plains one day. Great stuff Mike. I watched all your fresh videos with a cup of coffee this morning. Get that DVD out before the tropics crank up this year.
Wow! This must of been the storm you got on next after you left Southeast Kansas days after with the Supercell that we where all looking at around the Independence, KS, and Fredonia, KS area on May 1, 2008.
What a hail shaft! I would be turning around myself. You could see it coming right at you.
Yep. After the May 1st storm, Jim and I headed back to OK City and met up with a bunch of other chasers and hung out for a few days while the pattern reset. We headed out to Amarillo on the 5th and then down to Lubbock on the 6th. Though they didn't produce any tornadoes, the Littlefield/Olton storms were incredible. That hail shaft/microburst feature was just unbelievable!
so amazing its moving soooo fast!...DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY!

LP supercells do tend to have beautiful structure. Here in Montana they get some truly awesome pics of LP cells out on the plains.

I Think it´s not healthy to drive into the hail core of a LP-Supercell ;)
Hail can grow up to 15cm size in a LP-Supercell ;)

@Wobstormi Um... isn't that rule number 2 of storm chasing? 1. never chase at night. 2. never punch the core.
