Probably not a good idea to encourge lost children to climb a tree just put up a signal. Better to teach them to light thier fire and burn green wood to create smoke.

We did not and do not encourage them to climb trees, we teach them to put it as high up as they can safely they tied it to a branch that was even with a hill, no climbing involved. There are places where no green or wood is available period or it is to dangerous to start a fire. So flag, light and reflective signals are all they may have

hummm .. really do you think the 2 kids would be that relaxed if they really got lost? What make you think they would follow any of those things in a stressful situation ? Any last of all why are those kids going anywhere at all with out an adult

Strange things happen in life that are beyond our control, better than they have they knowledge than not have it . To not give it to them is like saying I do not need to teach my kids to cross the street safely because I will always be with them. These skill are for life. At first they would panic a little I am sure like most adults do, then they would realize that was not helping and they would go to wok to take their minds off of their fear.
