it's a shame there are no carriers perserved in their original ww2 condition, Uss enterprise or saratoga would have been more ideal as they were decommissioned straight after ww2 and were there last of their classes, but i guess at the time there wasn't enough will to do it.
Liberty's,Victory's,C3's,Destroyers,Battleships,Frigates,Tugs,SubTenders,LST's,LSD's,PT's,Oilers,HospialShips,GarbageScows...The WHOLE Nine Yards!
And the control rooms are just a bunch of navigating around. You have to go up the stairs and down the stairs, etc. and so on. At one point if you go into the control rooms you will see a broken down escalator.
I went on a trip to new york city when i was going into 7th grade and while i was there I visited that aircraft carrier and i thought it was very cool. Ther concorde parked just to the side is a great display.
I went into the control center and took a look around and sure enough there were dummy pilots in the control rooms.
the engines have probbaly long since been removed, and also at with diesel at 4.50 a gallon, thats a big tank to fill. we cant keep it active because we already have 15 carriers active, whole battle groups. if they convert it to nuclear power it may see service again. but realistically it is a relic.
Why not just fire up those engines and let the Intrepid make some of the trip under her own power? I guess they're afraid to operate a vessel that old and risk breaking something but it would be such a greater spectacle if they did!
I was on the ship on July 3rd 2010 and ooohh my what a beast ship
