  • are you using the default presets or have you made your own patches? if so, i'd like to hear them.

  • @rockyraccoon1

i just program it on-the-fly. i don't bother with presets on it, as any sound it's capable of can be had in 10 seconds or so using the panel. it's very fast to program despite appearances.

  • An excellent demo. I'm glad I got the LP as opposed to the mini. What would you suggest as a good delay unit to pair with the LP?

  • Starting about :30 to about 1:45, I would have said "Minimoog", if I didn't know better.

  • Sounds great! Nice Thingamagoop! Have you used that on the CV input?

  • @TheNymans thanks! if i had a wave rectifier module then it would be a good CV-source; but since audio is AC and CV is only DC it ends up being like half-modulation. the phatty won't track incoming AC signals through the zero-axis.

  • @shaft9000 Thanks! For the reply! I built a Thingamogoop 2 and it does have CV out (not 1V per octave though) and I saw a video of someone controlling a Moog Prodigy with one

I'm not sure how useful this is but neat.

I gather your Thingamagoop is the series 1 then.

  • the slim phatty manual itself talks of the little phatty as "based on minimoog model d".

i like its sound, but its one oscillator less, isnt it?

  • @basswerkrec it's based off the voyager much more than the modelD. sure there's lineage, but we're a couple generations removed. the newer oscillators are far more stable with different waveforms, VCA is much cleaner and the ranges of the new Moogs' controls are different than an old mini.

regarding 3osc on the miniD it is also an LFO and is not in the audio path if one wants to have vibrato or wobbles - or any modulation except VCO cross-mod requires the 3rd osc to be in LFO mode..

  • @shaft9000 ...interesting....didnt know that about osc 3.....

  • is it monophonic??

  • @frusciboy yes

  • So many synth geek comments on this video! If you play phat it will sound phat.!

  • I would say that the people who post comments such as 'this sounds nothing like a model D' have never actually played a Minimoog 'D'. Apart from the fact that the raw waveforms are a bit brighter on the D, the basic sound is very similar. The Voyager is even closer in sound.

  • For all those who say this sounds "too digital," please tell me what digital synth can do all this and help me save the money.

  • @benbrucato77 My answer buy a Spectralis 2 and you will get a great sounding digital Syn...ok...not the same price range....but worth it....

  • Sweet sounds. It's like chocolate for my ears.

  • @RainMainDein

Expecting a cheaper new synth to replace a 2-3K classic is not realistic to begin with. Besides, you're half-wrong anyways. Indeed it IS a Moog sound - Bob Moog designed this synth. It is NOT a "minimoog Model D sound" is what I believe you meant. People that want a minimoog D should buy a model D not a little phatty.

  • @shaft9000 What at €5000,also why does everyone call it a model d and not just minimoog.

I do actually like this synth though, but am planing to buy a second hand ms20 instead, hope to get a hands on sometime.

  • @RainMainDein WHAT?? that is pure analog warmth, you my friend are ignorant. I would learn what analog is.. it doesn't mean crisp and loaded with effects.

  • @RainMainDein You do realize that most analog synthesizers don't sound identical to a minimoog, right?

  • @RainMainDein Funny to see how you judge a synth by viewing a 240p resolution youtube video

  • @RainMainDein LOL. The sound is not even close to digital.

LP has a great analog sound. It's full analog. And IT IS a Moog sound.

You can't really say that if you don't try it. This is a video, sound is corrupted. lol.

  • @RainMainDein something is wrong with you. It most definitely sounds analog.

  • @bryanlstamps ...listen to the filter e.g. in high resonance...to metalic...has not the same warmth anymore....

  • is it possible to modulate the cutoff with the freq of any of the oscilators? and is it possible to modulate vco1 frequency with vco2? i am looking for a nasty synth capable of horrible basses and really distorted leads (industrial, really analog and dirty techno, planet terror, etc)

  • @mynmyself

yes and yes. osc1 is an available mod source for any of the destinations.. but only one mod at a time unless you use the CV input(s) as well. it can be nasty for sure. filter overdrive and fast EGs make it a punchy quick performer - especially w/ the filter in 1-pole mode.

  • How fat is the bass on this, is it equal to other moogs?

  • @maccagrabme

i have a voyager and also some modular and arp 2600 - the phatty is plenty fat, don't worry. it has discrete osc and filter.

but w/ only 2 osc there is a limit to how WIDE or deep it can sound. it's also just a mono out, wheras the voyager has stereo filters.

  • Is it possible to get a Lucky Man fat Moog sound out of the Little Phatty without any add on devices?

  • Great demo. I just got one of these....is there a cheaper way of adding reverb without ordering a moogerfoooger?

  • @saarnoldbhm there's no moogerfooger that can do reverb, afaik. anything from a Radio Shack 'black box slider reverb' to an Eventide pedal will do reverb . digitech and Boss make them too. Tube amps and keyboard amps are good too. But for best reverb sound quality for the money you can't beat a Kurzweil Rumour - i found one for $325 on Ebay and it's TC/Lexicon quality. Also nice and cheap is the Ensoniq DP series .

  • @shaft9000 : while the Rumour is a good unit for the price, saying that it is in "TC/Lexicon" quality is a bit of a misnomer. If you mean TC M*One or Lexicon MX200 then you are correct. If you mean System 6000 or 480L/960 quality you are off base.

  • @theoriginalmrsm

Sure, it's not going to compete aginst a $10K+ system6000 of course not. You'd be off-base comparing a 6000 to any Kurzweil in the first place, when there's Bricasti and some EMT available for half the price of the 6000. I was referring to the 'standards' : the far more ubiquitous PCM range; m2000, m3000 etc. The Kurzweil processors all use the KDFX algo and excellent converters. You should A/B them against a PCM/M-x000 some time.

    not mx200 and mOne, either.

  • @saarnoldbhm how about an ehx holy grail in the efx loop?

  • @saarnoldbhm sure are. you can add reverb after the recording using free VST software. or find one of the many less-expensive rack or pedal units that generates reverb. or play it in a cave!!!

  • @shaft9000 Thanks, Just got back from the cave--it was cool; though my band mates thought it a bit too damp.

  • I cud listen to this guy 4 eternaty

  • One of the best sounding synths in my opinion. possibly thé best, man its so awesome.

I just ordered a Microkorg, but my next synth will definitly be this one.

    It's fucking amazing!

  • That was an Insane video man

    cheers for putting up

  • QUALITY!

  • great synth, thanks for posting

ps: gotta love that roommate disclaimer in the video

  • yeah I like the real PHATTY analog sound this produces... no wonder dre loves this thing

  • Daets wun faet sind? WTF???

Oh wait hold on... here's my hack at translating old norse:

    "That's one fun synth!"

I didn't even use google languages!!!

  • or FAT synth sorry!!! Phat synth?

  • fat sound

  • Great sounds, love analog, now can u put together a track, maybe some strings, bass line, vocoder, drums etc, now that would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm so jealous, i can only afford crappy midi controllers...

  • god i hate plasticy, shitty and over complicated interfaces. I hear you.

Sell it all, and save for this synth. Its quite affordable for its capabilities and its always updated, modified and built on by Moog, even more than the Voyager.

    Good lck!

  • @Taud its ok u can make those sounds on every free soft synth.

  • Looks like the LPs design is inspired by the synclavier

  • @psicolor a bit, yeah. Even more, take a look at the Crumar Stratus - eerily similar to the LP!

  • kickass demo

    i really want one

  • i want a phatty now ! nice demo !

  • is some one shoot ing glaming errows at me

  • Now this is a demo.. thanks!

  • I hate the fact that manufacturers don't put aftertouch in all synths. I hate manufacturers. Such a huge blow to expression while playing two sets of keys at a time.

  • Hello, I've posted this video on switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com

  • I love that song. ^^

  • Me too!

  • THats an awesome video man. One of the highest quality sounding Ive had the pleasure to view.

    Moog Lives!

    Rhythmicons

hey this video made me wonder if they could make the phatty into a keytar like the liberation. haha!

  • Nice demo, thanks

  • Whoooooooo .... such fat sounds!!! Really love it. What is the difference between this and the Little phatty stage 2? Keep up the good work!

  • thanks.

Stage2 has a USB port and MIDI-syncable LFOs & an arpeggiator.

this is the Tribute Edition - it has the wood sides and slightly more analog guts inside. No USB or MIDI-sync/arp, though.

  • "more analog guts inside" How so? thought the internals were identical

  • they differ a little, in that to keep cost down on the Stage model some of the controls are multiplexed(digitized) rather than directly controlled by the analog pot. the difference is not really noticeable.

  • stage II has arp

  • The 1st Phatty can have it too with an OS update. :-)

  • how to uptade please !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't own a LP, but when I was looking for some feedbacks someone said Moog put an OS Upgrade on their forum.

  • Cool vid, just ine question -

Are the rotary controls smooth or do they work in steps?

    Cheers

  • they're all smooth, except for the one on the far left is an incremental 'data wheel' type knob

  • great video man! you did a great job of demoing this unit, Bob would be proud.:p

  • He actually planned it, and I agree. I just wonder if he designed the outside...that took a little getting used to. When I first saw it, I was all "WTF?" But it grew on me and I can't picture the LP having any other shape.

  • the exterior casing and layout was designed by Axel Hartmann (Hartmann Neuron/Waldorf)

  • Thanks for the info! I am also the proud owner of a Phatty, in case you didn't figure that out from my previous post. I have an Amos Gaynes Signature Edition Stage I. It's a custom job. I'll get around to posting a video sometime this week.

  • Sweet. Does it have any mods? Or is yours the charcoal-black w/ special backpanel & lights - i vaguely remember something about an Amos edition :D

I like the design a lot. Put me off at first, but now i wish more synths had ergonomics this good. It actually improves playing and invites further programming - unlike too many synths I can remember...

  • Right now, the only mods it has are the blue button lights. I am currently working on a rainbow light circuit for the pitch and mod wheels. It is a Stage I with the silver back and Amos Gaynes signature in two tone silver on white. It is sonically and visually a work of art.^_^

  • uhm.. this gives me the need of moog! it's been a long time i don't touch my little phatty friend... i'll get back in action now!

  • That was great...cheers!

  • cool man, I wonder why people are still paying outrageous prices on Ebay for prodigies and rogues and micromoogs when the Little Phatty really sounds just as good and has the benefits of patch storage, midi and the newer ones have even more features. I guess nostalgia cause I can't see the point I've owned them, they break alot why bother when you can get a new one for a little more that is better right? Have fun with your little phatty it's an awesome synth.

  • not only that, this synth is Bob Moog's concept. The rougue/prodigy/ were desinged after Bob left Moog in the 70's iirc, so they are slightly less 'Moog' in an absolute sense.

Although that really doesn't mean much to me. they're still great synths. Oldies but goodies.

  • Yes they are, but the little phatty is really the same thing (2 oscillators, filter, vca) but the little phatty is so much more than those. It is true I do believe that neither the rogue or prodigy were done by Bob Moog, but the point is I paid $350 for a rogue and about $375 for a prodigy about 15 years ago, they were nice but limited and they broke all the time! Why pay $1000 for a rogue when for $1200 you get a phatty which is a very similar architecture but has more features + same sound

  • can't argue with that!

  • I bought Moog Rogue for 400 euro, and I think it was a good investment - since it will probably only raise it price.

I've recently played on Little Phatty, and though I was always very skeptical about new Moogs... MAN! IT'S SO AWESOME! TRUE MOOG SOUND, END OF DISCUSSION! Maybe not as dirty as older moogs, but certainly evenly warm and more juicy.

No question about it - I'm getting it! If I payed 400 for Rogue, then LP is worth over 2000 for me. And digital control is something I can't miss, btw.

  • WHERE do u bought the ROUGE for 400 ?

    PLEASE ANSWER !!!!!!!!!

  • "No EQ or fx other than the reverb in Sonar and some echo/delay from a Korg ESX-1."

Kind of stretching the definition of "no" there but, regardless, good video.

  • thanks.

well there's only delay on a couple of patches... and reverb is there to just give a little sense of how it sounds played in a room. dry is dry.

sorry if i offended your technical sensibilities.

  • hehe the "lasers" part was funny

  • how many oscillators does the little phatty have?

  • Three - 2 are audio oscillators while the 3rd is strictly LFO. You can also use Osc 2 as a mod source for crazy FM sounds.

  • two

  • I like how you show the one oscillator sounds... it's easy to mask the sound of a good synth by adding two oscillators and dirtying up the basic sounds. Cool video

  • where the golden 80s bro play a 80s style track pls

  • you're all welcome.

I dream of Moog sending me a free 'fooger or two for promoting their wares. ;-)

  • sure they will, just send in a few hundred bucks saying which ones you want XD

  • Brilliant. You really show what the LP is capable of. You have made a tough decision to buy this easy. Thanks so much!

  • you're welcome.

these are just simple 1 osc patches..there's so much more it can do.

    it's such an amazing synth.

    you won't be disappointed!

  • whats the difference between the stage and tribute little phatty?

  • the difference is the wood panels and the rear end has bob's signature instead of the moog label, the lights are blue and pink, internals are the same, there you have it, i own a tribute #601, i do feel a little cheated that the stage came out so soon after the tribute, meh nothing is sacred anymore

  • you have wooden side panels though.

I'm thinking about making some wood side panels for mine.

  • actually, the internal circuitry is a bit more authentic in the tribute. the stage's 'Real Analog Control' is not as much as the tributes: the EG's and LFO control is digital in the stage iirc, while the tribute's 100% analog - i know this for a fact.

hardly noticeable to be sure, though. rest assured the stage is still a 100% analog signal path, just the controls are not wired in the same way to keep the cost down.

  • very cool! what is the difference between osc sync and frequency mod?

  • afaik osc sync restarts the cycle of osc2 every time osc1's cycle begins. this is HARD sync; the usual type. a few synths have SOFT sync, which inverts something... i'm not sure on softsync...it's rare.

frequency modulation is using the frequency of one osc(could be an lfo OR audio-range osc) to modulate the frequency of another osc.

It is sometimes confused with Filter Modulation, which is the same except the thing being modulated is now the filter's freq instead of osc's freq.

  • Thank you.

This is exactly what i've been looking for about the phatty. Open straight from occillation.

    Cheers.

  • good demo,

to me it sounds just as lush as the voyager,

the teeny bit of reverb makes it sound nice too.

    dazbo10

  • Excellent, Shaft! I would add this to the "Analog Synthesizers" group here, if YouTube hadn't misplaced the "add to group" link!

  • Hi Marc, thanks for the kind words
