i work at blockbuster and john ferguson used to come in. i remember one time i asked him for his autograph and as he wrote it he thanked me. such a nice and modest man.

@tonythetigerII You don't know what you are talking about. In an earlier altercation Ferguson hit Hull, whose own stick caught him in the face and cut him badly. They fought, Fergy won. In the rematch Hull still had a grudge (as he does to this day) and he *already* had a broken jaw yet he ran Ferguson in the corner and high sticked him. Ferguson knocked Hull down and his helmet/cage came off. Fergy skated away. Class.

Ferguson was a tough guy, yes, but there's the story of the time Gordie Howe challenged him to a fight. Howe was spitting ice chips right into Ferguson's face and smiling as he did it. He just kept spitting and smiling and daring Ferguson to fight him. Ferguson didn't accept.

I was there that night about 12 rows up right at the faceoff circle. Fergy did plug him good and by far the best fighter of his time, ask Ted Green and the rest of the 5 teams in the league at the time. He was a big part of the Stanley Cups for Montreal. Eight years 5 Stanley Cups. He even Jean Beliveau a better player by giving him space from other players.

@BJ270848 That is true. Mike Bossy would never have scored as many goals as he did if Clark Gillies was not there to protect him. Gilles and Nystrom were a big part of those 4 cups. Before Bettman made the NHL a pussy game,and with all of these guys from Europe, you needed tough guys to protect your high skilled players.
