Imagine the binoculars being released as a Transformer. I take it Megatron, Soundwave, and Reflector were part of this series also? (robots transforming from life-size items)
@Blackboilingrobotoil The removed functions of microchange toys and excluded diaclone pilots really explains ALOT. Size-change, pointless buttons, metal pieces for magnetic diaclone feet, missing ironhide & rachet heads, even the pointless driver seats in vehicles.
Would've been cool if those binoculars made it into the Transformers line but then again, all it would do is worsen that whole size/mass change situation that people tend to get so mad over...

blaster percepter and soundwave are repaints of tis guys the thing that puzzlez me is muw come they look EXACLY like tf g1 but a different colour mabe tf copy after seeing the toys
No, not quite. Hasbro and Takara worked together to create Transformers, taking the early toys in the line from many lines, mainly Takara's Micro Change and Diaclone car robot lines by examining the toys, picking ones that could work, then going to the guys at Marvel Comics to come up with a story to turn the toys into characters. TF is one of the most successful examples of overseas business partnerships, two companies on opposite sides of the globe working together to maintain a franchise.
The Marvel guys had a lot to do with creating the very basis of the Transformers canon. For example, Bob Budiansky from Marvel came up with Megatron's name, a portmanteau of "megaton" and "electronic," and Dennis O'Neil, who worked for Marvel and DC, named Optimus Prime.
However, you are spot-on about the TV series; it started at around the same time and was made by Sunbow Productions. I guess I forgot to mention that - sorry. ^_^;
That's OK. You were right though Marvel was involved with the production of the TV series too. I actually didn't know about those names, thanks. One thing that Marvel did do though was that they got Toei Animation involved to produce the animation, as they all ready had a decent working relationship with them.
All of this shows that getting this radical new concept off the ground - this idea that we now take so much for granted - must have been a herculean effort and a big leap of faith back then. Even today it's an amazing example of international cooperation. I think we TransFans have a lot to be thankful for.
Indeed. Though the idea was about robots and the Japanese were more then happy then to assist and use the American idea. If there's one thing I learnt about Japan is that they love their robots. ^_^ And since the concept was quite new at the time to the rest of the world, no wonder it was a success.
Oh, yeah, I know what you mean. XD I am a major Gundam and Macross fan as well as a TransFan (mainly a Gundam fan), and I definitely agree, our friends in Japan love their robots... and those are just the realistic ones. Once you go into the Super Robot genre and start mixing fantastical or magical or other unrealistic elements with the robots the gloves come off. Some of those guys - like Ideon back in the day or Gravion now - are just plain insane, but we love them anyway. XP
I thought you were a Gundam fan by your username and icon. I happen to like a few of the Gundam shows myself, however Tomino's earlier work 'Space Runaway Ideon' or as I call it 'Space Runaway Idiot' was a little bit of a waste of time. Why bother making an anime, when the Universe gets killed off in the end, but that's how Tomino worked back then sadily. At least in 'Evangelion' (which I got into recentily), we believe everyone can become alive again after Third Impact took place.
*laughs* You have a good point there. Space Runaway Ideon was... well, it was odd to say the least, but Tomino's made some odd stuff in his time. And yes, the whole universe got killed off. Yoshiyuki Tomino is affectionately referred to by his fan base as "Kill 'Em All Tomino" because of his fondness for killing off his characters - even main characters - when he's in a bad enough mood. And sometimes he "apologizes" later by retconning or offering alternative versions of scenes.
Ah yes, the infamous retelling of Char's Counterattack where Quess dosen't get killed and Hathaway Noah gets the girl. I like to think that he was incredibly depressed and didn't take his medication until about the mid 90's as when he returned to Sunrise before the end of the decade, he's work got a lot more cheerfull.
Oh shit, I got that blue Blaster. Too bad his cassette door doesn't close all the way. Not sure if the radio works or not. He's pretty cool, nonetheless.
The Micronaughts are actually the progenators of the Transformers!

Soundwave was a micronaut? Oh, man, I haven't been this dissapointed since I found out Nicholas Cage wasn't really a vampire....

Sure wished Hasbro had kept the working radio gimmick intact when they turned it into Blaster.

Actually I believe it was Sunbow that Hasbro went to, but Marvel did make a comic series and co-produced the cartoon.

I'm guessing they focused more on the small metal robot figures, then the larger Transforming robots I guess.
