That just warms my heart, dude. It's nice to see that old thing so well-restored. My first car was a '79 Rabbit (the name of the Golf in North America) diesel. Slow as hell but cheap to run and loads of fun to drive! :)

I have a 1982 Rabbit Diesel. Have been running it on 75% Heating oil and 25% used engine oil. Still running after 4 years. The used engine oil needs to be pre-filtered to make sure all of the metal parts are removed.

Are you sure that this car is from 1977?

Until 1978, Golf 1 has been delivered with metal bumpers and small lights. 1979 the Golf 1 got plastic bumpers like your Golf 1. And 1980 the Golf 1 got the bigger tail lamps.

Nice car! I use a 1982 1600 Mk1 diesel, 5 speed everyday to get to work and it never lets me down. It's suprisingly refined once it's warmed up and these engines just go on and on. It's the bodywork you have to keep on top of after 28 years! Good luck with yours.

good to see an old chugger like this back alive. i have a us spec german vw rabbit made in june of 78 and it has a 5 speed and a 1.6 diesel love these cars and theyll love you back. nice find

i had one in highschool and drove it for years after i crashed it i yanked the engine out and straped it to an 15k generator head where it is today and still runs when the power goes out ...will run for a week on 15gal of fuel..

This is quite interesting. I have a 87 VW Jetta which was abandoned on my property 11 years ago. It is a diesel too. The car ran but was towed by the tractor because a tie rod was broken. I don't think it will start. The battery must be drained plus the car was sitting outside in deep freeze, that can't be good for fuel.

I think a tree is growing through it.

Nice find!! I just love the sound of a 1.6 diesel running. I miss my 1980 Rabbit 1.6 diesel 50 MPG and the sound of that motor there's nothing like it. Now I have a 2000 VW Jetta TDI which is a great car but not as much fun to drive as the old diesel rabbit

Man! I've had a 81 Golf convertible with a 1.6 liter diesel engine we put it in. I sold it 2 years ago and i am still crying. I should have never sell it... Believe me THE BEST DIESEL ENGINE EVER MADE it the 1.6 diesel VW engine! I just love that sound, and i'll never forget it! Good luck with it!

The story is, I found this car in a barn. 2km from my own stockage of 2 other golf 1's.

And its a diesel of 1977 (first year of the diesels).

But it was standing there since 1989, so after 18years and an age of 31 year, the car started immediately!

So, what you can see here, is an alive and kicking old golf!

But there is still a lot of work to do...
