  • Nice! Well done! Its like 7 mins-ish of pure summer :D

  • surprised you were able to get a picture above the waist with Trey, especially in 97.. im guessing you didn't let Brad have the camera haha.. anyway .. Great Yemteca Apparatus !

  • has anyone pointed out the Golgi tease yet?

  • Yemteca! Your the man!

  • lol at random golgi riff

  • nice man done well

  • Yep. That's pretty much it... Something funky going on at 4:22. As good as you are, I am guessing you have a cut-away lying around somewhere. Wherever it is, that is what you should have played this on. Great job.

  • Nice job man....from Buffalo......

  • YEMTECA!!

  • loved it!! :-D

  • no way! you did yemteca 2 years before phish!

  • @telatela420

I don't want to brag, but that's what I was thinking when I watched the live stream--I did it first, but they did it BETTER! I was so jazzed to see it! Thanks for dropping me a line.

    David

  • continue to amaze me with each video!

  • This is amazing! Big Phish fan and guitar player myself of a couple years although nowhere near this good. Some of those chords and sequences in this song look crazy hard! Anyway, I've enjoyed this and a lot of your other videos as well. Good stuff.

  • Dave!!! You are da bomb of bombs my friend!!! 20 K hits on this awesome solo!!! I have been watching for the last few days hoping to be the that hit, but missed by a few. Your musical skills continue to blow me away, the times we've shared in the groove remain so fine and fun, but you my friend are the best!!! amor y besos amigo and how you bust out some more of this fine phish stew!!! Hugh

  • @ezwind

You are too kind. The epic song is the real draw to the video, not me. Do you remember when we posted our first video? It nearly took a week before we got a single view. Who knew that we'd eventually have nearly half a million hits???? We're no Lady Gaga, but it's still pretty unbelievable. Let's get together this year. I'm really itching to do St. Stephen!

  • @sneakypower hey, how about some tabs of how you play yem?i also am playing on an acoustic without a cutaway so i'm interesting in learning how you play this

btw best phish covers ive seen

  • awesome job man keep it up

  • hey man great cover, im havin some troubles with this song thought :/ got any pointers for someone like myself?!?

  • three people are jealous they can't play this. This is great man I can only barely play this on an electric. you must have ridiculous finger strength.

  • nice bro

  • did you tease Golgi Apparatus at one point during that?

  • Comment removed

  • @georgethoro Right around the 4:00 minute mark, thats definitely a Golgi tease

  • @georgethoro Gee, ya think?

  • @georgethoro I thought it was pretty obvious.

  • Shits good man. I'm a Phish fan, unfortunately I cant play the guitar but I do love this song and you played it very well.

  • God Bless Ya! My favorite song since I was 15 (30 now).

  • dave, why don't you start doing trey instructional videos. i would pay for them! clearly you know his style in and out. you are an amazing player.

  • phucking great!!!! loved the golgi tease @3:56

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome! And the fact that it was on acoustic makes it even more impressive. I enjoyed the Golgi tease, too. Keep it up, man.

  • Damn...amazing technique, GREAT tempo and cohesiveness with no backing track...maybe one day..

  • very jealous you kicked it with trey! spot on cover!

  • Excellent. And how you played different octaves in the beginning arpeggios to make it easier for yourself

  • @tjmend532 Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure it's "easier" this way, but I certainly had to drop some passages an octave to accommodate the limited range of an acoustic guitar. Take care,

    David

  • Wow, nice fuckin job man.

  • That was amazing, congratulations. Think you could tab any of this out for me? Or maybe an instructional video on how to play this? Incredible version once again, congratulations.

  • good fucking lord that was fantastic!!!

  • @kingpengvin Thank you so much.

  • simply amazing. my absolute favorite phish song, i'm so glad at my age of only 20 i have heard this song twice! once in miami & the other in charlotte! RIGHT ON MAN! YOU FRIGGIN ROCK!

  • nice man!!!

  • hey dude, I gave it a shot too...check out my YouTube.

  • I love the disinterested look on his face during the intro and pretty much the rest of the video

  • Awesome...blew my mind

  • I'm having a hard time closing my jaw! Absolutely B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!! It IS my absolute, all-time, favorite song EVER (and has been since 1992--I was 12 then)...Thank you David

  • amazing

  • Well, technically no scales, they are arpeggios, which are basically chords played one note at a time. The opening arpeggio is a Bb major. After that, there are probably several dozen others, starting with G minor...Too many for my feeble mind to think up at the moment.

  • What scale is used for the opening licks?

  • dude this is fucking awesome, jam on

  • Yo mo fro get a hold petal yo!!!

  • really good, but why not electric?

  • Thats a good song to play on the beach...nice dude

  • really nice job!

  • so you ran into trey at Disney world!? what a day!!!

  • No, the picture is outside of a bookstore in Phoenix, AZ. Disneyworld would be a trippy place to run into him, though.

  • Still man i hope to one day to get lucky and cross paths with one of those guys... check out my yem video just posted it.

  • indeed

  • BEAUTIFUL dude!

  • Martin?

  • Great Job!! Nice Golgi tease!!!

  • this is really good, im also trying to get this and many other songs down. If you have any tips they would be much appreciated

  • nice manteca at the end, haha nice playing

  • The intro part is great! Did you use any tabs for this? I've tried to use some tabs I found online (obviously for the electric) but I can tell something is "off".

    Great playing! You're an inspiration!

  • Comment removed

  • very nice indeed

  • excellent man.

  • Do you have any sort of pick up in there? Or does your Martin just sound that good?

  • great!

  • Really enjoyed this man! Good job!! Bravo!

  • acoustic? that takes balls my friend

  • Three, in fact!

  • Only three? When I try to play this song I feel like I need the aide of at least 4 balls, but if three works for you, I suppose it couldn't hurt to give it a shot.

Any tips for someone currently learning this beast of a song?

  • this guy is sweet, but he's still not the best guitar player named david harris.

  • ...am too! LOL

  • sorry, david ryan harris is really good- he is one of the back up guitarists for john mayer.

  • You make me smile!

  • Man. This song is HARD to play. Great job

  • Nice man. Ive been playing for years and Im sure sure anybody would agree this is a pretty hard tune to play. Great job!

  • man i hope i can play like that some day treys stuff is amazing

  • cool rendition. i'd love to see Trey do this live :P

  • I cannot believe you learned this entire thing on acoustic. You're a freak... and I mean that in the nicest of ways!

  • can u guys do a cover of stash? that would be so sick

  • If you make an instructional video, or even slow this one down by 50% I will send you $10.

  • I subscribed.

  • this is SO SICK! could you please put up an instructional video on this? amazing music man...

  • NICE!!!!!!!!!!

  • This guy HEARS it! awesome job man!

  • ok dog...thanks

  • Dave, this is awesome! I love your little Manteca addition in there

  • Sweet. Thank you!

  • this was very nice man someone besides phish doing you enjoy myself justice going all the way to the 20th fret on an acoustic.damn!!! oh boy!!shit!!washa fessey drivinto ferenzy|!! yea ten outta ten

  • its wash ufizi drive me to firenze

  • watchu feze drive me to firenze

Its talking about asking a Persian cab driver to bring them to Florence

  • actually its "wash ufizi drive me to firenze" and it means wash your feet and drive me to a frenzy

  • actually "wash ufizi" is a play on words; Uffizi is actually an art museum in Florence, Italy. And I believe its also referring to Trey and Mike's dirty feet at the time. "drive me to Firenze" is probably what they said to cab drivers during their time in Italy since Firenze is "Florence" in Italian (I take Italian at school). lol but it isnt as if the lyrics have an real pertinence, its YEM, the sweet jam is really what matters

  • Comment removed

  • Hard enough for me on electric.

    You rock man.

  • Thanks man! You're a metalhead. This should be a piece of cake for you!!!

  • Haha yeah I had jsut started working on it when I posted that, got all the arpeggios from the intro and bits of the jam section now.

Pretty fun song, both to play and listen to :)

  • Wow, amazing. You even did some of the bass parts.

  • Thanks...And I was even riding a unicycle while I played this!

  • Awesome! Did you just learn it by ear?

  • Yep. It took a few days!

  • i am convinced. this song is gonna get me laid

  • This is amazing. Great job man.

  • Fantastic.

  • Wow.

I'm tripping on your talent, ambition and sheer damn perseverence.

All these versions are fantastic, luvin' them. Keep it up.

  • well done!!!

  • wow conrock is a dick. that may be one of the hardest songs to play. Excellent

  • i watched this yesterday and started to learn it i got the jist of it but i cant get the speed down..will the speed come just with practice?

  • Absolutely...I have distinct (and recent) memories of not being able to play parts of this even at snail speeds. BABY STEPS!

  • thanks man...some parts are so frustrating i just wanted to make sure i wasnt the only one who thought so

  • I kinda put down the acoustic 2 years ago and stumbled upon this video. . You've inspired me to jam out again, can't believe I've let it collect so much dust in this time! Awesome job, such a mellow tone

  • Rip out your vocal chords and hang yourself with them. Nice muff at 3:44 by the way. BRING ON THE THUMBS DOWN BITCHES

  • roncock,

you're entitled to your own opinion. Have a great day.

  • that was not me man, my friend got on my profile and apparently was trying to make me look bad...but i think you kick ass, i have no clue how you made YEM sound good on acoustic but you did. btw, i like the roncock comment haha

  • No sweat. Sorry for the reply, although your friends behavior is really shameful. You may want to talk to him about those socialization lessons his parents never taught him.

    DH

  • disney harris.

  • i play everyday but i cant do sweeps or arpegios that good so

  • This is excellent dude, absolutely awesome I kill to be able to do that.

  • Thanks. Stop the killing and start practicing.

  • great job ;)

  • right on brother....that is truly some Jedi playin...keep on rockin

  • lol @ Disney font

  • Just got back from Hampton, they were absolutely awesome. One of the greatest moments in my life for sure. Anyway being there reminded me how good a guitarist you are. Hope we get some new stuff from you guys soon.

  • So glad you got to go! Thanks for not saying, "Just got back from Hampton and it reminded me of how much you suck compared to Trey!" Keep in touch and be well!

    David

  • No problem. In my estimation Trey is the greatest guitarist on this Earth and you are the only one I have ever seen do him justice. So to me that makes you pretty damn good.

P.S. Those west coast dates are coming soon so they'll be out your way.

    Mike

  • DAMN!

  • i love those jerry-ish riffs between 2:30 and 3:00

  • I got good news for you sneak! Rumor has it that west coasts dates are on the way...

  • "From your mouth to God's ears," as my daddy says. Thanks for the ray of sunshine!!!

    DH

  • sweet little harmonic at 3:30

  • Does anyone know where you can find a lead sheet of this? Great performance by the way.

  • If you download the program PowerTab--It's free--you can find a full transcription of it.

  • how the hell can i learn this?

  • dude ur the man

  • Well done Sir!

  • Nice golgi tease at 3:59

  • yea. I wish I could do that... See ya at hampton...

  • You're buying my tickets???? I love you!

  • Oh no, just assuming you'd be there that's all. I don't have tickets either, got stumped on the lottery.

  • i feel your pain. i too have been stumped. if i get stumped again i may die

  • yeah your definately nasty i wish i was that good

  • Your Martin sounds great BTW.

  • what chords are you playing for the chorus?

  • Gm7 C9

  • wow

  • Sneaky - I appreciate your quick response man.

I'm trying to work out YEM - I'm self taught, I've been playing since 97', I can rip the basic pentatonic and major scale forms with ease, but other modes are foreign to me. Anyways, I have the tablature and have been sort of struggling to get the through the arpeggios cleanly and quickly. Kind of ridiculous to ask, since obviously you have really no idea where to begin in a situation like this, but do you have any general tips?

  • i dont know if i can give you any help but for like the fingering on the first arpeggion i do the 12h13 using my middle finger on the 12 and ring on the 13. then for the 12 on the d string i use my middle finger againm then pointer finger for the 10 on the g string. middle finger for the 11 on the b string. then i use my pointer finger for the 10 on the bottom e string and my pinky for the 13 on the e string then the same thing back up the neck. hope that helps u out. sorry if its confusing haha

  • arpeggio*

  • Believe it or not, I have a general tip...Before tackling this song, just practice slowly sweep picking major and minor arpeggios with roots on the 5th and 6th string (ascending and descending). I'm not sure how Trey fingers this song, but if I'm near right, he uses just about every major and minor arpeggio shape(and a diminished or two) off of the 5th and 6th string.

  • Sneaky - did dropping the melody an octave make the fingerings any more straightforward/less complex? Or was that just so you could play it further down the neck considering there are not as many accessible frets on an acoustic?

  • Hey there!

#2 is correct. I'm not sure it's technically any easier an octave lower, just more accessible on the acoustic. When I play it on an electric, I play it the "regular" way.

  • killer pic to start that one out... I've watched all the vid's are think they are the shizzle! You guys rock, keep up the good work!

  • Hey can you tell me what the lyrics are in the chorus? I have never been sure

  • The lyrics are "Wash Uffize (you Feetsy) drive me to Firenze." Uffize is a famous art gallery in the Italian city of Firenze (Florence).

  • Thanks man

  • Actually it is a play on words. He is correct they are referring to the art gallery in Florence which they visited (trey and Fish) but it also has to do with the fact that when Trey and Fish were in Italy they picked up a Hitch Hiker who wanted to go to Firenze and he spoke no English. It was the same day that they had been by a lake washing their feet off and swimming. In fact Fish almost drowned and scared Trey to death which was the inspiration for the intro to the track.

  • thanks for sharing the knowledge

  • I was under the impression this song was inspired by an LSD trip in a wavepool in Germany.

  • Sneaky - your playing is royalty. I am beyond envious. I typically shy away from learning complex phish tunes so as to not remind myself of how technically unsound I may be. I fancy myself a good "feel" guitar player with some decent improv skills and dynamic rhythm. HOWEVER, I started working on YEM last night via tabs and I'm afraid my skills are going to have to improve before I can nail the song. The opening arpeggios are hemming me up. I suppose the only tip you'd have is to PRACTICE?

  • I liked it. This song is pretty easy on electric, but harder on acoustic. Nice work. Also, it was interesting to watch how you chose to pick much of it...I like to use a raking motion on the electric but I've found it's easier on acoustic to alternate it all. You kind of switched it up the whole time. Nice cover.

  • The only difference I find between playing acoustic and electric (besides the tones that are produced, obviously) are that you have less playable neck and you (or at least I) can't play passages as fast. I can play this a little faster on electric. I

  • dude i could watch this dude play while i drink all night forreal mad fun to watch and listen to..thank u

  • nice Manteca jam!

  • Epic.

Another awesome job man---keep it uP!

  • dude did you play some golgi at 3:57??

  • I don't know if it was at 3:37, but I tried to sneak in a Golgi tease.

  • wow man.. holy crap. Pretty!

  • thats alot of song for one acoustic...i don't know how you pulled it off!!

  • Smoke and mirrors. Thanks.
