Thanks for posting. I was there in the infield. Standing in the infield, the roar of the grandstand and the people in the infield was deafening. Didn't hear anything that loud at the track again until Zenyatta won the 2009 Classic.
these two will forever be linked, thats what iliked about the 80s outwest, horses didnt care who the derby winners were,if you hooked them, they could beat you. and when was the last time two horses in the same handicap race carry 127 lbs.truly a great era.
The difference between Alysheba and Ferdinand was the difference between great and very good. And that difference was heart and mind. Ferdinand was a pack animal, and would pull himself up when he made the lead.He didn't understand winning. Alysheba was like that through his 3 year old season. And then, mentally, he started to get it. His win percentage jumped and he put together one of the great handicap seasons in the last 25 years. Ferdinand was talented, but there's a reason why he lost alot.
You are short-changing Ferdinand. He won the Kentucky Derby, and oh yeah, he also defeated Alysheba by a nose in a little race called the Breeder's Cup Classic.
wow! thanks for posting this classic! alysheba and ferdinand 2 kentucky derby winners! and to think this race was run at santa anita AFTER the santa anita handicap..the days long before the dubai world cup would have stolen one or both of them....
Wonderful video! An absolutely awesome battle to the wire. Alysheba showed his big heart to win it. A great run by Ferdinand, and Good Taste ran HUGE just to keep up. Thanks so much for posting it. Take care.
I love this race, any of them could win.
