The TVA spill has brought attention to the hazards of coal ash waste; however, coal ash has been killing Black Americans for decades. In Florida, much of the public housing was constructed on top of coal ash waste fill dirt, dumps, and landfills. So too many schools and other structures were similarly constructed using coal waste as soil. Today, HUD is removing public housing at an alarming rate, much of this is due to coal ash waste, expeciallly in the south.
@Rubenleesims - Interesting. Have you connected with the Center For Health Environment and Justice CHEJ - this is Lois Gibbs group. I have not heard about housing developments being built on coal ash dumps, that is truly sad, disgusting and shocking.
TVA is an independent, government-owned corporation. TVA receives no government funding, and instead makes all of its money by competing with other (typically private) suppliers. TVA manages to under-cut its competitors in the market, due to its large scale, and its willingness to cut corners, which is exactly what lead to this.
This holding pond was known to be weak, had failed before, but was deemed too expensive to replace. WAY TO SAVE MONEY, TVA!
the above was supposed to be in response to kaiser0soze, and his comment that "Everybody who lives there need to sue this fucking piece of shit company."
To reiterate: I couldn't agree more! its unfortunately the only recourse we have against them.
I used to wake up everyday and see bullshit all the time in Roane Co I lived in Midtown close to this TVA plant most my life and somehow this doesnt surprise me because of the politicians we have in the area. It does amazes me thought to see Roane Co on national news more than any other city in the USA.Remember,Judge Austin? Or the courthouse shooting? Maybe when the dipshit Sheriff we had in early 80s that raided 20 tons of marijuana and tried to sell it later? Roane Co.....My town...
dead fish? why worry? TVA says, "water samples are within safe levels". TVA first said about 1.7 million cubic yards of wet coal ash had spilled, but now says,...5.4 million cubic yards. But wait didn't they say there was 2.6 million cubic yards in the pond in the first plac. No confidence in what they say, so don't drink the water.
What a shit hole. When's the EPA going to list this crap as a hazardous material? Oh wait, they wont. They can't even put a limit on the level of perchlorate in water supplies let alone deal with this. What a joke.
I heard this story. It even gets worse. This power plant was trying to find new ways for energy but they screwed up and now once a beautiful lake is now hazardous waste hole. And finding greener energy? It is destroying the earth.

No company spilled anything here. It's a government agency that spilled the sludge.

At least they called the sludge polluted-- first they were trying to call this a mudslide!!
Thes companies should have to pay big time-- to get a permit to house this stuff in the first place
Environmental Hazard Insurance
and then they should have to take it home with them and put it in their bathtubs, aquariums and swimming pools and then try to say it is safe--
It is obviously poisonous-- highly alkaline would be my first guess, thinking we could make soap with all that lye.
