He is playong a flute which utilizes toneholes, when played in sequence, voices a D scale. Modern flutes play a C scale with all keys closed to the R1 finger voicing a F natural. Both modern and wooden simple system flutes play in the concert pitch of C. A C simple system flute is a larger instrument whose lowest non keyed notw is a C. The lowest non keyed note on a modern and wooden flute is a D natural.
I love flute so much! :) What kind of flute is this? The one I play (regular c flute) is played the other way. It looks like he's holding it backwards.
@taylorlyn18 I think it may hae been made for a left handed hold. He would probably refer to the flute he is playing as a'D' instrument ...are you classically taught ...that would lead to your 'C' classification....a great source of confusion here!!
Is this for real? a left handed flute. or is this a mirror trick. I play flute and have tried many different types. never in all my years have I ever come across a left handed flute.
I just recently started to double on flute after years of sax playing and the highest clean note I can manage is a very high Bb that would be in the third octave on flute
Any flute players out there: What do you call the highest range on the flute? You know, those few notes that seem to get you all excited and ready to do a jig and dance. It's important that I find out.
@BlackXSunlight by flute do you mean irish flute as here, or just the standard metal western concert flute?
For the latter, the bottom note is middle C, and regularly a flautist can play to the B nearly 3 octaves abover that. However with slightly more difficulty the C-E above that ARE possible, but don't go putting fast passages up there
Also, many high end flutes can play a bottom note a tone lower- the Bb below middle C
is there any disadvantage if a right handed person holds the flute the way he does? i started playing flute not knowing that a right handed person should hold it the other way around, and my uncle never told me :( i want to change now but it's too late, i couldn't play a thing while i hold it the right way.
@Muzikman127 yes it could but the level of difficulty within a tune in the ke of "F" or "Gm" would be much higher than that of a tune in the key of a simple key such as "D" "G" or "A"
True. What a shame that he got so far along without ever being shown how to hold it. Probably won't correct it now. Instead of holding it against his lip with the base of his upper index finger, he's holding it agains his shoulder with his thumb. Needless strain on the neck and thumb, harder to breath, reduced stamina, difficult to look foreward (hopfully he doesn't want to read sheet music). You can say he does just fine; true, but who knows what he could do with correct posture.
@OakAged72 There is much in what you say , but for just trad playing in this way he probaby feels its fine for him ....classical teaching and playing in a wider context would benefit from your instructions.. posture/ brathing/reading/ chromatics/ chords/ key shifts / phrasing and so on...but that's a hard sell in trad circles!
Right, just like the way you learned to spell "probably" because you don't read books. People know what you mean but probably underestimate your intelligence. If you're OK with that, then it's all good. And if Mr. Shannon prefers to maintain his comfort zone rather than persue the benefits of a proper grip, and can play long enough for his own purposes, then it's all good. So what if it makes him look like Quasimoto.
@OakAged72 And you obviously over-estimate your own intelligence. One of the foremost exponents of the Irish flute would be Michael McGoldrick, who has an even more ''Quasimodo-like' way of holding the flute.
There is no such thing as 'proper grip'
The comment 'and can play long enough for his own purposes' is just offensive.
@theloveboxquartet Right, I'm stupid because I have an opinion, and because another great contorted player exists. Imagine how stupid I'd be if someone held a flute with their elbows or feet!
I'm sorry you're offended by the notion that he can play for as long as he wants. In any case you've overestimated my interest in your opinion of a Youtube comment I posted a year ago.
Left handed flautist, Pretty interesting and I bet its very challenging for right handed players,it could be a little confusing you think? I would like to try a lefty flute in the future just to experience it and see how far I can go with it. Other than that Gary you sound very nice.
could anyone tell me the make of his flute please the name of it because a friend of mine likes it and would like to find one, let me know :) thank you :) xx
oh yes indeed you can. but they dont come cheap. a good one without keys will run in the neighborhood of 500-1500 dollars. i can personally vouch for the quality of Casry Burns flutes as well a Ralph Sweet. both here in the us
noobieninja9, I've asked those questions myself! Played classical silver flute all my life until picked up Irish music. I love my flute, it does have a much different tone probably since they are made of wood, etc. I personally think that a lot of it is simply letting go and playing from the heart, as if you yourself were dancing.
i have been wondering this for a while, but how do you get the flute to sound so...so...not like it usually does. Like, the irish jigs don't sound like the normal flute sound, know what I mean? Does it have to do with tuning, or the specific flute, or do you just play it a certain way?
You can always find some way around what you're taught as a newcomer to music playing. My band teacher always told us to keep the flute parallel to the ground. I didn't pay attention to him. XDD lol
So it's better to not mix Classical World with Traditional music. Because Trad has other dynamics, another concept of musical virtuosism, giving much more importance to sound than position. Trad music has Swing, or a more "Improvised" and sensible interpretation of the musician, and having the tone and style that Garry shows in this video, worths the same as a great Boehm flute player playing Mozart.
In traditional music, "classical and good holding flute positions" worth nothing if the player has a great sound and doesn't hurt himself, etc.. It's the same debate classical musicians always have towards folk and traditional instrument techniques and playing, It's not so different with the Fiddle, if a "Classical Violin Maestro" Sees "Tommy Peoples" master of the fiddle) He won't understand anything, and he would probbably find a lot of bad postures, etc in his playing.
Holding the flute that way gives Garry an advantage with his rolls on A and B, since his fingers are flat. I never could get it to work for me. Too uncomfortable. It SURE works for him though! Great stuff.
He's resting the flute on his shoulder instead of on his thumb. It's common among self-taught flute players. There's a cool Seamus Tansey video on you tube. He did it as well. There are many paths to greatness. Thanks also to comhaltas for the great vids!
Also check out Donal Murphy and Friends on You Tube, which was also posted by comhaltas. Eamon Riordon holds his flute very similarly and is also great. Once again thanks to comhaltas for the fantastic vids.
lol, always kinda funny when people post such remarks on a video of a MAESTRO playing... "He's holding it wrong", "he's doing this wrong", etc. For crying out loud, he's a fukkn maestro and plays like one, so who cares how he holds the flute?
It's true. Aa really down to the earth kind of person. He was my very first teacher in Ennis festival in the 90's and he still has a kink (where his thumb rests) in his flute. Thanks for the posting. TWC Try to find Dog Big, Dog Little, by Garry.
