I don't like killing things either which is why I got the live trap, but when I checked with experts I was told that they would travel a good distance to return. So short of loading them up in my car (not) for a drive, at least with the chickens they have a chance to escape into the nearby woods (there are usually about 6 in the trap at a time) or become a part of the food chain. Circle of life. By the way the children are NOT evil.
We found out that chickens like mice by accident when setting them free one day. Mice leave droppings that can be very harmful to people and animals. Perhaps it would be better to poison (aka torture) them or use traps that might just smash a leg or maybe just do nothing and let the other animals and people get sick. If you let them go they will come back. It is much better not to waste a resource but use it. @unityspirit51
I killed a mouse in my garage and threw it to my chickens and they barely pecked at it then left! I think mine are spoiled rotten, or they only like live ones.
